Jack The Ripper Tour

Jack The Ripper Tour

9 жыл бұрын

Established by Richard Jones in 1982 the original Aldgate East Jack the Ripper Tour (www.jack-the-ripper-tour.com) is an expert led walk around the Whitechapel Murder sites that is conducted by expert guides who have written books about Jack the Ripper.
In this short video Richard gives some of the history of how he came to start the tour and provides you with a synopsis of why he believes this to be the best of the London tours that cover history's most infamous sequence of murders. He also explains, step by step, the route that the tour takes, whilst the evocative accompanying footage, shot on an actual tour, which was conducted by leading Ripperologist Philip Hutchinson, really captures the mood and the mystery of the World's greatest whodunit.

I love the fact you show the buildings that are still there today. That makes it feel more real as the new builds have no character or personality. The cobbled road & those arches that were so common at that time in the 1800’s. Love it, really great video. Thank you.

I used to live in Swaton Road for a short time in 1977, and walked from the West End via the City through Whitechapel..to the house in Bow ..there was a pub then that I remember had Jack the Ripper signs outside, and it was an eerie feeling in the early hours of the night to know that this was the area where the poor women resided. For me, it is Mary Kelly that utterly appalls..Millers Court. I wonder if the site where Millers Court was retains any vibes..one would think so, but perhaps bright light and the new buildings raised high above the ground have expunged any lingering vibes. Mary Kelly's room must have been miserably cold, with it's broken windowpane and open fire..yet she was just dressed in a thin chemise at the time of her slaying? despite the November Chill. That dank echoing passageway has long gone- I worked in Heathcock Court, Strand, and that too was very narrow and enclosed, opening to a small area where the offices were. Gloomy in winter, even in the twentieth century.

For a long time the infamous crime scene photo of her, I couldn’t really see very clearly because it would always be too grainy, dark or just not that clear. When I finally saw a clear picture I was in shock at the amount of mutilation done to Mary Kelly. I could understand why over a century later it was not forgotten and these murders have remained studied. Oh MILLER’S COURT remained an infamous murder site for various murders after Mary Kelly.

Is there any social experience quite so spellbinding as a well told story? Story tellers have been with us since time immemorial. There are story tellers still holding audiences in large numbers in places such as Uzbekistan where large colorful backdrops serve to bring the observers to the sites and times of the story. Likewise these London walking tours hopefully will be about for years to come. With knowledgeable expert storytellers we may look forward to enjoying such conversational walks ourselves.

I was in London for an exhibition in February '22. Since my hotel was in Whitechapel and I have an interest in this story, I would have loved to take place to Jack the ripper tour. Unfortunately, it was not possible due to some business commitments. I was frustrated by this but next time there will not be any excuses! I will participate in the tour. Whatever it takes! Great job by a passionate man though. Well done!

Like most ordinary, people, I have always been fascinated by Britains late Victorian / Edwardian era; and the 'Jack the Ripper' horror in particular. I've read many books, and watched all the TV and Film versions, I had my favourite suspect, BUT, one issue that had to be explained, was the fact (surely) that the Ripper, just had to be badly smeared with blood, hence the suggestion by many, that ''HE' would have escaped quickly, by Hansom cab. BUT , last night on channel 5 TV. I did some 'catching up,' from 2014, when a new (to me) Ripper suspect, was introduced, in a excellent documentary. Charles Allen Lechmere, or Cross, as he told the police. I won't attempt to relate the whole documentary, but, not only was Lechmere, caught standing over victim No1, Mary Ann Nichols , it later turns out, that he was a Carman (carter, who collected and delivered raw meat, from the Abattoir. So being regularly covered in animal blood, would not appear suspicious or require explanation. Add the other main point, Lechmere moved house many times, and lived virtually at every murder spot, between home and route to his place of work. The documentary contains more condemning evidence, and some conjecture, which I considered entirely acceptable. Watch it on KZbin, and say you are not convinced. The TV prog , showed a photograph of Lechmere, taken in 1912. I must say ,that he looked nothing like a mass murderer, but then--he'd got away with it, those past 24 years.

Great comment I definitely think he's a suspect and like you have watched and read many jtr things. One thing I found was that he may not have been covered in blood. I saw one doc where it showed if he strangled the victims first and they were dead when he stated cutting them there'd be no blood spray. Also I think he could easily bring a spare coat to cover up. But if he did have blood on him like you say his profession might make a good alibi! Xx

Atmosphere, that's what it's all about. I used to try and soak it up, not in London but in my home town of Bristol. Parts of it are very reminiscent of Ripper territory, a beer and a smoke, either of and evening or a quiet Sunday afternoon in the sunshine. Why the latter? Because of one photograph of the outside of Miller's court by Leonard Matters (I think) with the woden chair outside. An old friend tried a similar thing concerning his postwar childhood, as he remarked to me once, you can get close but never quite get there.
