You have to remember this was "The Tonight Show" and the Audience was predominately White. They wouldn't have understood what Michael was doing. It was a comeback for them since The Corporation who gave the their First Four Number Ones had broken up, Michael's Voice had changed and he was scared they wouldn't be able to continue. Shortly afterwards The Jackson Five (Sans Jermaine) left Motown for Epic so they could write and produce their own hits. They got slapped with a 20 Million Dollar Lawsuit that took Five Years to settle where they not only paid Motown back $500.000.00 but lost the rights to the name Jackson Five and the Motown Songs they recorded. Also Bill Cosby was the "Guest Host" that night.

The stupidity isn't on the cameraman but the director in the control room. there are several different cameras recording all members of the group. the director was responsible for ordering the control room to switch back to the camera that was on Michael.
