I’m from NYC, but spent a lot of time in North Philly, eventually moving there for high school…so Philly is my second hometown. This song was recorded in Philly, at Sigma Sounds, as the Jacksons were signed to the TSOP (Sound of Philadelphia) label under Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. I heard this song SO MUCH in North Philly, as it received mad airplay on WDAS under DJs, such as Georgie Woods, Butterball, and Jocko Henderson. I never got tired of this song, as I kept it on REPEAT even when I wasn’t listening to WDAS. For anyone that doesn’t know, Philadelphia is a huge depot, culturally speaking, for music. Detroit might have had the music scene in the 60s….However, Philly stole the scene in the 70s & 80s, with artists like Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls, and Phyllis Hyman….That’s why the Jacksons had to record their first two albums after Motown with TSOP. Thanks again for the post. I love this song, as it brought back warm memories.

This is the adult Michael Jackson i liked. This is pre-pop superstardom, pre wearing shades inside, pre hanging with chimps and lions etc. The beauty of KZbin is u can pick any era of Michael and watch it, early Jackson 5, mid Jackson 5, later Jackson 5, the Jacksons years, solo Off The wall years, Thriller years etc.

This was good, but not really their best work. Gamble & Huff were great and particularly sophisticated producers and songwriters and hitmakers to be sure, but they were still singing other people’s commercial, formulaic music and still weren’t really allowed very much to write their own songs.
@rangokfunkazuul8344
@rangokfunkazuul8344 8 ай бұрын
@@RocStarr913 not really, when they became The Jacksons, they started to write their own music, in the same album where Show You The Way To Go appears, you also have Blues Away which is Michael's first ever written song (or at least published)
@RocStarr913
@RocStarr913 8 ай бұрын
@@rangokfunkazuul8344 True, but they only got to write two songs on each Gamble & Huff album. It was clear by the Goin’ Places album that The Jacksons were becoming pretty stellar songwriters in their own right with “Different Kind Of Lady” particularly, to the point where discotheques would play it, even though it was the B-side of a single. So it was largely the music of Gamble & Huff and their associates with the first two albums for Epic.

@@OneYulawThis isn’t the Destiny era. Destiny era is late 1978 and mostly 1979 with the ‘Destiny Tour’ that didn’t end until January or February 1980. This performance from Top of the Pops in England in 1977. Show You The Way To Go is from the self-titled The Jacksons album that was released in late 1976. @@prod.justjae9957 At the time, they were still having other people, namely Gamble & Huff, whose record label had a distribution deal with CBS at the time, do most of their music. If they did that too much on television back then, there would be no incentive to go to the concerts. Also, it takes a lot of time to set up a live performance during television programme tapings and it was simply easier and more time-saving and less potentially risky in terms of potentially spontaneous and particularly transgressive behaviour to have performers lip-sync.

Fantastic to see a TRULY LIVE VOCAL PERFORMANCE of the Jacksons from 1977 showing the brothers at their peak. This was their only UK No1 single. The following year they had a top 10 hit with the record that has become their best known from this period- Blame It On The Boogie. Incredibly BOTB was a flop in the USA! Michael would go on to star in the Wiz with Diana Ross before launching his adult solo career in Autumn 1979.

The instrumental was prerecorded but all the vocals were live so there was no improvising they just had to roll with it and it got cut short. But it happens you know? Even to Michael Jackson, it happens. They’ve all more than made up for it.
