I was the the kid that (inadvertently) started all the violence. I was only sixteen, I was sitting on the stairs at the interval when the some quite older French skinhead looking blokes beckoned me over, I thought to talk. Then they started shouting at me in French, then some older English lads started getting in the face of the French men and then French thugs pulled out an iron bar and and a belt made up of spent gun cartridges and they tried to hit us. I slinked away fearing for my life but another bloke got his head bashed in (he later returned much to everyone’s relief). And then when The Jam came on, it all kicked off again. The only person concerned with our safety was Bruce Foxton, he kept yelling for the security. Thank you Bruce for caring about us. All of it was a bit too much. I just wanted to listen to some live music.

I was 17 and had to get permission from my parents to go. I remember what seemed like riots to me in the streets after the gig. I was on the first coach to 'get away'. Someone threw a bottle through the coach window where I was sat. It was a very cold journey home. Coming from a small town in Hampshire it was quite an eye opener for me. I think I saw The Jam 10 times that year but that was definitely the most memorable.

Great gig , i remember 9 or 10 coach loads of us from london going over for this Paris gig,organised by Pauls dad, John. Turned out a load of French Oi Skin/Punks were tooled up and spoiling for a ruck,hence Weller tied a British Flag to his mic in anger at the morons. Jam played a great set , and John made sure all the fans boarded back safe too...

Excellent! When You're Young is totally underrated. Record store in Austin TX 1980. I asked for recommendation. Women showed me Absolute Beginners EP then available. Next I bought Sound Affects and worked backwards in the catalog. I thought The Jam was awesome, on par or close to The Clash and Elvis Costello. Bruce Springsteen albums of that period terrific too.
@virgilrytaar90836 жыл бұрын
This was the loudest the Jam ever played. I was deaf for 3 days, I truly thought my hearing would never come back. The P.A. was insane. You cant tell on here but if you see photos of the speakers it was incredible. I noticed at the exhibition in Liverpool that there was a note to the crew to only take into venues the amount of gear that was needed and not to go 'over the top'. They usually took no notice

Such a pity that Paul Weller broke up the the Jam and left for some other stylishless projects. The Weller-Foxton-Buckler team was truly brilliant and to me one of five best UK band trough all times. The aggressive rock-punk-mods crossover style with Weller’s genius lyrics together with the prominent and melodic bass of the master Foxton made the Jam totally unique and so interesting. It is almost the same kind of magic that Waters and Gilmore produced when together in Pink Floyd but in a different genre. What kind of brilliance would have come out of this band if they had made two-three more records!? Hard to think they had reached the end of their capacity when they broke up. Weller’s (and the others) productions after the Jam was really nothing in comparison. And this Paris concert was really a pearl, thanks so much for uploading!!!

Remember sat in a cafe watching a Citroen 2CV being torched accross the road from us, then the Paris fire brigade turned up and didn't have a clue what they were doing, all seemed a bit like a Keystone Cops film. Had one of the coach windows put through after the gig. Long trip but the band were brilliant as usual,

I remember that scene too. Im my memory serves me right, it happened when a fistful of french skinheads ran away to escape from angry brits who decided to teach them better manners. They sheltered in the car, tried to start the engine but failed. As a result, they ended up with a bunch of brits shaking the 2 CV like crazy. Didn't watch the end of it, but really, these brits made my day ! French skinheads in Paris were such a pain in the ass at that time...

Saw the gig and travel arrangements advertised in the NME a bit late so we went down to the address that was advertised and it turned out to be John and Ann Weller's house in Woking, they were a bit surprised, but sold us some tickets and I must say very hospitable given a bunch of unknowns turning up on their door step. Trip was great although the gig had a tense atmosphere, Got surrounded by French yobs who thought the A on my American Army coat stood for Anarchy just avoided good kicking

Yeah, this gig was prob the most memorable for me too , along with the first jam gig i attended, at the lyceum in london early 78, which was superb,but marred with some probs in the tube station after.Still went to see them whenever they were in london,worse gig for violence though ,was after a gig at the rainbow, when a load of morons started throwing fire safety bottles,buckets ,and anything they could get their hands on into the train carriages and fighting. despite this, saw some great gigs.
