55 years old now, and have been listening to this from then to now. I like The Clash etc, but The Jam was the best of those groups.

a lot can be said about the energy and tightness of the jam in their live hey day, this song is incredible.
@domoreilly51472 жыл бұрын
So true. Everyone talks about Weller but Foxton and Buckler were both top class musicians and the three of them were so tight as a unit.

I just love how into it Paul is at this show. He's singing each and every word with absolute conviction, I think elsewhere someone said he's spitting out every word. No damn cell phones, the crowd is just as into it as he is (which is made more clear if you watch the whole show). If I could go back in time to any show in history, this might be the one. They do like five encores.

yep....i was at this 1 and 5 other shows on this tour. UNREAL!
@jkthemod5 жыл бұрын
He had sincerity, passion, honesty (painfully so...) and heart. They never "mailed it in"; each single/LP/Gig was all out. God love 'em. Nothing like 'em since? likely never.

You are so right about the audience. People seem more interested in filming and showing off on Facebook than enjoying the moment. And you're right about Weller - where are the angry young men now?

id give anything to see paul weller reunite the jam for a one off.id have given to have been older than just a kid when they were originally out in late 70s and early 80s cause if i was older my parents would have let me go watch them before they split up.paul wellers words are still true to this day.the man is the modfather.simple.respect always.

Best feel good jam song ever. Paul Weller rocks. 😎👍
@mndandy12 жыл бұрын
When I figured this out on guitar I suddenly realized what a cop of "Dear Prudence" the progression was. Strange, I've always hated that song but "Running On The Spot" is one of my fave Jam numbers. This version is killer- and I can't believe Buckler is singing on stage!

mndandy Weller nicked so many songs he’s a thief
@LaurelCanyon19694 жыл бұрын
The Beatles nicked plenty too (Come Together for a start) - it's what great musicians do, take their influences and make them into something different and vital.

"Ba ba ba ba ba ba!" I remember we came out singing this cheer, shouting & laughing on the streets of Boston, after seeing the boys 4 my only time @ The Orpheum Thtr fall '82... Running on the spot we were emotionally crippled but still kicking out the foundations in our hearts & minds, determined to see that this world's boat gets rocked... [Another Ace of hearts find.]

@BattleofTours732 Your friends are followers. They can't think for themselves like most kids in high school. All those records you have; they were all made buy the time Paul Weller was 23. He read one book in high school but he was this incredibly formidable lyricist. Everything The Jam did had balls and any band from any era would have trouble measuring up to what they accomplished in a 5 year span. My favourite Jam album is Sound Affects, how 'bout you? What's your favourite?

I think the thrust of this song was toward those who 'revel in rejection' i.e. the aging punks of the time (and today) who project their woes 'out there' and fail to get their fingers out of their backsides. They do the talk but not the walk (and all that guff ;-)

Empty gestures indeed, I wonder!?!?! Anyway, this is one of the best and most incisive songs about 'that' generation ever. The lyrics speak for themselves, and proves Weller's 'god-like' genious. Weller is very intellgent to have been so involved in that movement, and yet see the good, and obviously crap, about it. + the new version is shit in comparison, I'm afraid. It's just like running on the spot!

this is from THE GIFT album,which was great in parts, but if you wanna check out their best albums?? get ALL MOD CONS, SETTING SONS and SOUND AFFECTS. All them albums are the bollocks!!! people talk about bands like kasabian nowadays as great,but wouldnt hold a candle to the jam.
@The.Last.Guitar.Hero.14 жыл бұрын
fucking bands today can't write songs anymore...this wasn't even a single ffs
@PerryCuda3 жыл бұрын
Listen to Weller talk about peace signs and empty gestures. The Jam was never comfortable with the leftist gesturing of the 80s - anti-England, political and charity concerts. Never really fit in. Kinda of like The Band was to the 60s. Both created timeless nativist songs.
