The Jamaican Maroon Wars | History Reaction

Jamaican Maroons descend from Africans who freed themselves from slavery on the Colony of Jamaica and established communities of free black people in the island's mountainous interior, primarily in the eastern parishes. Africans who were enslaved during Spanish rule over Jamaica (1493-1655) may have been the first to develop such refugee communities.

It's make me feel sad , proud and angry at the sametime........they teach us this in school...imagine as a kids knowing that people use to treat our ancestors unlike an human but property ....not even viewed as a person but an undeveloped animal.....but they couldn't kill our spirit and never will

Crazy because the maroons are where we inherited speed from because they had to be running all the time from the English soldiers dated over the years to naturally adapt that sparked the rumor of an extra tendon

They did know where the maroons was but they had extremely difficult navigating the hilly territory in many cases when they tried to go after the maroons they were ambushed

The British did go up to destroy them, but, the terrain and the Maroon style of warfare was impossible to defeat. Most of the maroons were prisoners of war from Africa.

Also, persecuted Jews (Spain) and the remnants of the Taino Indians fled with the slaves to the mountains.
