Proud to say, the bald-headed trumpeter, Mr. Joe Collier, is also a member of my band in Augusta .... PlayBack "The Band." Joe's enthusiasm is truly authentic. He's definitely an older dude with a funky-young attitude. As always, nice work Joe Collier from Lucy Laney High School, the pride of Augusta, GA. Guitarman Keith Jenkins is holdin down some serious funk too, he's the band's historian -- he knows all the ins and outs of the legendary band, since its inception in the mid-fifties til now. And, Danny Ray is another classic. In Augusta, he's also considered royalty. A true MVP of the funk music history scene.

The "original" J.B.'s The J.B.'s were formed in March 1970 after most of the members of Brown's previous band walked out on him over a pay dispute. (Brown's previous bands of the 1950s and 1960s had been known as The James Brown Band and The James Brown Orchestra.) The J.B.'s initial lineup included bassist William "Bootsy" Collins and his brother, guitarist Phelps "Catfish" Collins, formerly of the obscure funk band The Pacemakers; Bobby Byrd (founder of the original Famous Flames singing group) (organ), and John "Jabo" Starks (drums), both holdovers from Brown's 1960s band; three inexperienced horn players, Clayton "Chicken" Gunnells, Darryl "Hasaan" Jamison, and Robert McCollough; and conga player Johnny Griggs. This version of the J.B.'s played on some of Brown's most intense funk recordings, including "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine", "Super Bad", "Soul Power", and "Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothing". They also accompanied Brown on a European tour (during which they recorded the long-delayed live album Love Power Peace), performed on the Sex Machine double LP, and released two instrumental singles, the much-sampled "The Grunt" and "These Are the J.B.'s".

Excellent homage to the legacy of the Godfather of Soul. So nice to see the band is playing on, as in the words of the Temptations. Imagine how difficult it'd be to continue a band once headed by the Godfather of 'Soul. Great work, guys. Thanks for keeping the FUNK ALIVE. Mr. Brown is looking down, and very proud of your efforts. Git Down Soul Bruthas from Augusta, Georgia ... AIN'T IT FUNKY? ... WELL, IT SHO NUFF IS, AND SUPER BAD TOO!!!

The players here have been with James Brown over the last decade before he passed . It is nearly impossible to keep all the members of a band together for 60 years. Guys die. Get too old to travel. Staying healthy to stand and play night after night . Try doing anything like this when sick with a flu. Who fills in for you. Very tough on a traveling show band. Most musicians that do part time gigs on weekend nights at the local club or hotel have no idea what this type of job entails. These workers are true professionals.

@@rolandbush8463 Well you can say that about any of his bands even back in the 60s. I don’t care how good the band was without James Brown in front of them they were not the attraction. @@rolandbush8463 No band is going to be like they would be at the replaying with James Brown. He could take any band and turn them into a great band according to Fred Wesley. No Maceo, No Fred Wesley, No Bootsy??? Fred Thomas came two or three bassists down the line! None of the rest of these dudes are in anyway responsible for, or had anything to do with that defining "Hit Me On The One" funk, spawned by The Godfather of Soul and Bootsy Collins, circa 1969. More like some cats calling themselves jbs, covering their groove, but nowhere near representative of The Original JBs. If I am not mistaken, the rest of "The Original JBs" other than the ones I mentioned are doing sets on the Pearly Gates Tour. Whatever happened to "Truth in Advertising"? Anything for a buck. 😕😑
