I just sold a pair of 4408's after having them for a few years. They are just okay near field monitors for broadcast/ film use, in my opinion. Very nice, precise soundstage. They can be somewhat harsh in the mid treble, though, and compared to similar newer JBL Synthesis passive studio monitors, do not resolve quite as well in the midrange or upper bass, either. This is not knocking them at all. My observations are owed more to advances in modern speaker technology when comparing monitors from the 1980s. They are still a great bargain for that classic JBL sound, if you can find them.

We had the 4343 in the studio back in the 70s, and they were my favorite monitors ever! They were so ahead of their time as far as handling bottom. I sure wish JBL (Harmon) would bring them back!!! Why let ATC have that niche of the market alone?

Thanks for the very practical guide on these! Would you recommend a particular set of stands for these? Would the JBL L100 stands work be suitable?

Did you remember to disasemble the tweeters, and change the foam dampening? They get brittle after a few years, and the sound of the tweeters change. It's very tricky to do, and often peoble ruin the diaframe. The last one I did, was from 86, and the foam was all but dust😕

What material did you use under the diaphragms?

These are mid 80's speakers. Around the time of the LX series that was made in Scandinavia from memory. The popular 70's model was the 4301B.

87-03 to be precise. So borderline vintage speakers, and not rare at all. In Denmark, where I live, they typicly sell for around 500-700$.

The diaphragms & dampners in the tweeters probably need replacement. Problem is, they don't exist anymore.Once the tweeters go bad the the speaker is shot!

Next time you show a speaker why don’t you play some music so we can hear it ..... I know it will not sound exactly as if you are in person but a little taste is good

A video over the internet played back on a phone or tablet or small Mac/PC speakers really can't do any setup we test here justice. Even if you output the sound to your stereo, the mics we use to record are great but not that good. Then you add video encoding, compression, KZbin quality levels, etc. So many variables.
