Thanks for sharing this very interesting video, I served on a WW2 Landing Ship, Tank (LST) in and around Viet Nam 66/67 so I know a bit about mass produced unglorified "utility" ships, it was miserable living and working conditions, but I wouldn't trade the adventure of that year for anything , it was something you couldn't AND wouldn't buy even if you could.

Thanks, Mark. Your comment about not trading your experience for the world was a common response. In large part, we owe our freedom as Americans, not only to men and women who selflessly defended our liberties, but also to these ugly, horribly sailing vessels, such as your craft and these Liberties. Thank you for your service.

Okay, I thought it was remarkable the 2 west German ships that were stuck in the Suez for 8 years and still able to move under their own power after idling for that long was remarkable, but an American steamer designed to last 5 years moving after 33 under her own power I find beyond incredible. I also find it incredible that she stayed ahead of schedule when the liberties were known for not being able to go any faster than 13 mph, with cargo at least.

Jared, it's an incredible story. A great book that offers a lot of details is "The Last Liberty" by Walter Jaffe. Unfortunately, it's out of print. Here's a link to a used one: www.thriftbooks.com/w/the-last-liberty-the-biography-of-the-ss-jeremiah-obrien_walter-w-jaffee/1027894/item/42170269/?mkwid=Vp0rZzwJ%7cdm&pcrid=11558858428&pkw=&pmt=be&slid=&product=42170269&plc=&pgrid=3970769502&ptaid=pla-1101002859940&Bing+Shopping+%7c+History&Vp0rZzwJ%7cdm%7cpcrid%7c11558858428%7cpkw%7c%7cpmt%7cbe%7cproduct%7c42170269%7cslid%7c%7cpgrid%7c3970769502%7cptaid%7cpla-1101002859940%7c&msclkid=6c11183b6d9a1854f852787810f2208e#idiq=42170269&edition=4909933

Built in Portland Oregon ??! Wow imagine 18 year olds today preparing to protect it. Not all but many would absolutely refuse ...sad ...but true, times they sure have changed

Actually, the Jeremiah was built in Portland, Maine. The Liberty ship was one of the amazing stories of how the United States gave everything to defeat the Axis powers in WWII.
