The Jerrys Farm in Flemingsburg, Kentucky is small and diversified owned by Jerry Hicks and Jerry Neff. They have farmed this land for 13 years. The raise heirloom varieties of vegetables and grains. They raise heritage breeds of cattle and hogs. And they utilize vintage draft powered farming implements, hand tools as well as the power of mules.
Jerry Hicks gives us a tour of some of the fields on his farm. On the first field, he explains the increase in hay productivity on the 15 acre field is due to haying and rotational grazing.
In another field he is planning on planting turnips and rape for his hogs to forage and follow with an alfalfa planting.
Jerry grew up with draft horses and started out with two Percheron/walking horse cross mares. He then tried out a team of mules and they have improved every day he works them. He named them Midge and Murt after his great-grandmother and aunt.
They raise 10-12 pigs and 12 steer each year to sell. We see video of Jerry feeding the hogs in their field.
Once a month they host a Farm Tour for anyone wanting to visit. This includes a ride around the farm with the mule team, a presentation about what they do on the farm and how they do it. Each month they feature a different farm related activity to showcase such as canning, butter churning, putting up hay, woodworking.
The products produced on the farm are sold in Lexington and Huntington, Kentucky as well as Cincinnati, Ohio. Local demand for farm raised products is still very low.

When he said about people would rather go to the store to buy meat, it reminded me of a comment someone left on a channel once. The guy was getting ready to take a steer he raised to have it processed. A woman actually said, "I don't see why you would take that steer and have it butchered when you could just go to the store and no animals would have to die." I left the comment, "Please Lord, don't let this person multiply." I couldn't believe someone could actually be that stupid.

We eat eggs from chickens we can see from our back porch, beef and pork grown within a few miles of our home and processed by a family owned business, also a few miles from our home. The quality ,in my opinion, far exceeds what you get in a big chain store. The flavor may be slightly more intense than factory grown products but you very quickly learn the best ways to cook and use the food.

It's like giving something you made for Christmas and it's not good enough. Never mind the thought and time and buying the yarn and such.

This is very interesting and educational! Greetings from Ohio! I can see you take very good care of your animals, and that's important. I don't think I ever saw a mule in person. Yours are beautiful. They look like they are a good team.

I grow up on a farm!, Miss my dirty eggy tasting eggs! When I was younger we had Dominic's I sold eggs, had a lady that had been buying from me for about 3months, till one day she told she wasn't going to be buying anymore eggs from me, said her husband found out that eggs came out of the chickens butt and she thought that when she got a double yoked egg that it was bad!, And she would throw them away!, When I was a kid if I got a double yoke that made for a great day!, But she wouldn't listen to me so anyway I had enough ppl buying from me, anyhoo good show guys

What are the mules look like Belgin cross? They are georgeous. Surprised that people aren't as keen on your natural farm raised produce. We are in Victoria BC Canada and that is what people want here. I miss the dark yolk eggs and those real free run chickens and turkeys and grass fed beef.

But I see their is no motivation with this farmer to NOT use large painful bits in his mule’s mouths. These mules do not need bits in their mouths to follow orders given from the reigns. These mules are helping the farmer earn a living, but that doesn’t matter to the farmer.
