Could you do a video on different gauges of railways and what uses, drawbacks and advantages they possesses? I have heard that in Russia some parts of the rail network uses another gauge and as such they have 2 sets of wheels and can switch gauges mid travel at speed. I might be wrong though.

I think it's facinating seeing one of these travelling at high speeds, and with those turbo-jets roaring like wild tigers. it's a brilliant piece of engineering. well done you did a great job ToT👍

I think youll need to do a part three on the union pacific Turbine locomotives, because by God they tried to make this work.
@quillmaurer6563

That was a turbo-electric, with the turbine engine driving a generator and thus the wheels, totally different concept. But to my understanding they actually were fairly successful for a while, as long as their fuel remained cheap enough.
@Mike_Squires
@Mike_Squires Жыл бұрын
@@quillmaurer6563 it's still a turbine/jet powered locomotive. Diesel electric and diesel mechanical locomotives are in similar categories so why not these too.

The TGV also was build to use turbine engine and was fully tested with them. However just before they could start service the 1973 oil crisis hit and changed those plans.

Wow...even with a jet turbine strapped to the engine, it still lacked the power to climb steep gradients. I remember watching another video relating to the jet train a little while back and learned about a certain flaw of the engine's performance: The rushing wind effect after the engine passing is strong enough to lift several ballast rocks off the tracks and fly towards you and/or your vehicle, making them hazardous projectiles.

Actually, the Black Beetle was intended to test track design-more particularly, it investigated whether or not conventional American track could handle very high speeds provided the vehicle was very light. Apparently, the answer was yes. The program WAS regarded as successful from this aspect, although the subsequent Penn Central merger put an end to that line of development (not that the NYC had any funds or willingness to go much further anyways). It DID also show that a passenger-carrying vehicle would need better suspension and the like, but that wasn't part of the mission to begin with so that wasn't a problem.

They just used the wrong kind of jets...... what you really need for speed is solid rockets ... worked for the shuttle and SLS . Only huge amounts of flame at face level is more dangerous than propellers..🤣👀🚀🔥🔥🚂👍

In all seriousness, though, part of the problem is that they *did* use the wrong kind of engines because the right kind of engines hadn't been invented yet. You'd need engines optimized for economy and power at low altitudes and relatively low speeds - i.e. high-bypass turbofans. Getting those to fit in a reasonable loading gauge would be a trick, though!

A video on the 1970's, I think, US Turbotrain would be interesting. It used the turbo engines to drive generators, not from the thrust, but were inefficient and dropped.

If you wanna look into another branch of "jet" powered locomotives, I'd recommend gas turbine- electric locomotives. Powered like a conventional diesel-electric but with gas turbine as a prime mover they circumvent the major downside of lack of overall tractive effort without the impressive speed of the turbo-jet locomotives, nothing they could do about the volume or relative fuel inefficiency at the time and despite Union Pacific's best efforts (along as several other experimental efforts by other countries) the 1970's oil crisis, aswell as in UP's case there use of Bunker C fuel causing more maintenance than anticipated killed them out. Having played with the design in Stormworks: Build and Rescue ( a vehicle designer ) it is worth mentioning that the relatively slow throttle response and ramp up time isn't suitable for shunting and fuel consumption at low power being relatively high compared they make best for long haul routes. It's for sure interesting to imagine what modern engineering could do with the concept

Canberra is the Capital City of Australia. In 1901 the Colonies of Australia federated into the Commonwealth of Australia and they needed a new Capital City. As such, they found a place inland and decided to build a new city more or less from the ground up. They held a contest for designs for the new city, with Chicago born architect Walter Burley Griffin winning. He was part of the Garden City movement, which sought to solve the problems of Victorian Cities with planning and Green Space, in particular green belts separating districts. Canberra is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

God damn, I never would have guessed that a B-36 could reach 700 km/h. That's speeds that superprops could do near their max speed. Like the Spitfire F Mk.XIV and Mk.22 could reach, I think the late G and K variants of the Bf-109 could also reach, and altough only an experimental model the Kyushu J7W1 Shinden could also reach 750 km/h, something that only the P-51D could reach. (But like I said a lot of times, The P-51 is fast, and has long range, but lacks in every other aspect. Late Spits and late Bf-109s were up to the challange, if not better. And I didn't touch the Fiat G.55 and G.56 Centauro-s) The problem is that it's the '60ies. 700km/h is a max speed not cruise speed, which is around 400 km/h. Apparently that's around the max speed of the B-17, an early....pre world war 2 bomber. The B-29 had a cruise speed of 350 km/h. The main problem, is that Max speed is not the important factor for Bombers, since they fly in a formation on cruise speed, and that's when they usually get intercepted. Now, the B-36 could fly at 700, but only flew around 400, and the fighters it faced had speeds of around 1000 to 1200 km/h.
