I saw one in an air show before it was discontinued. Even before that it was my second favorite military aircraft next to the SR71. I was working in Virginia Beach Va and saw them practicing day and night . At the air show they showed what it could do as far as it's flying capabilities . Amazing

I use to work on these when I was attach to VF-111 & VF-24 the plane was a chore to work on but it did the job it was supposed to do . I miss the Aim 54 missile nobody wanted to get in front of that missile because once you fired it had a mind of it own and by the time they've been destroyed . It help keep the peace and not one was shot down in combat !

What the majority of people don't realize is how freaking big these planes are! First time I got to crawl around on one when I was in the navy I stood behind the cockpit and it looked like I was standing in the end zone of a football stadium. These things are monstrous. And knowing how fast and agile they were makes them all the more impressive. Something that big shouldn't be able to move the way those planes can. Incredible engineering.

I worked on the F-14B with my squadron VF-103 through Desert Storm. I loved the plane but was a pain to work on. It could track 24 targets and lock onto 6 and fire the Phoenix missile and go hunt other targets. We developed the bombing system for it and dropped bombs in desert storm. The maintenance requirements is what killed it overall, but it's still a badass fighter!!

@@bbarker5766 that phoenix missile was a stud too. When I first saw that thing I was also amazed at how huge it was. Awesome weapon system. I saw both the plane and the Phoenix when I worked A.I.M.D. at n.a.s. Fallon back in 92 - 96. Loved that little base and the surrounding area. If my division chief and division senior chief wouldn't have been such collosal assholes I'd have probably stayed in a lot longer. But they sure did their best to make me hate them for some reason.

It's sad that I don't think we'll ever see another aircraft like this design ever again. The technical requirements and available technology at the time gave us the design, and IMO it's not just cool but beautiful. The design inspired anime, toys, etc. But at the end of the day it's dated for practical use. I wish they were able to keep more examples for use in museums and airshows instead of destroying them 😢

Yeah in real life Tom would have died. They could have given reasons why the fifth generation fighters lost outside of plot armor. Like they are prototypes, and were scrambled. The Navy used new top secret electronic warfare to make the missiles miss. It scrambled their radar guidance forcing them to get into gun position which it really was not designed for. No. They went with "pilot skills".

I think what you're trying to say is they should have produced one or two of the versions that never left the drawing board... the best of which was the AST-21 (Attack Super Tomcat, 21st Century). Can only imagine the Cat having gotten a digital radar, fully digital instrumentation, radar absorbing materials in the paint, digital versions of the Phoenix, digital linking to AWACS and other airborne assets to share information, and of course the ability to use newer bombs AND the AIM-35 AMRAAM. The Stink Bug just can't handle the job... they'll realize this when we piss off the wrong people and lose a couple carriers, unfortunately...

@@jasonbrown3632 Ok lets look at what the F-15 did better…: lower maintenance cost, lower unit cost, longer range, small rcs for its size, more efficient engines, the body could pull more then 10Gs without the risk of the wings breaking, depending on the variant better radar and weapons load, superior cockpit layout, build with upgrades in mind and the list goes on. The F-14 was a flawed aircraft from the beginning. It was dropped purely cause the price tag. The F-15 was kept cause how much cheaper and “better” it was. The only thing the F-14 could really boast about was the aim-54Cs 😂 they were not the best against a target climbing or descending. Oh also the F-14 was super fucking heavy and prone to failures on a common basis even the F-14D so sorry F-14 fanboys its not as good as you want it to be.

My Dad worked for Grumman on L. I. During the F-14 build years. He was a telemetry engineer that did all of the studies on flight characteristics. To help write the flight book for that platform. 26 years of service with Grumman up til the year they merged with Northrup when he retired. It was awesome to see those big ass birds fly by Long Island beaches to their test flight grounds off the East end of L. I.

The F-14 Tomcat was truly an extraordinary aircraft and it served us well from 1974, up until its retirement in 2006. In the early 1990s, Grumman (Which would then merge with Northrop in 1994, to create Northrop Grumman) proposed a new iteration of the F-14, referred to as the Super Tomcat for the 21st century or, the ST-21. The ST-21 would have been modern enough to still be in service today, kind of like the modern F-15EX EAGLE II, and would’ve marked a vast improvement in performance and capability over the F-14D. Sadly, the only remaining F-14s still in active service today are with the Iranian Air Force, though in low numbers of combat ready aircraft, due to a lack of spare / replacement parts.

F-14 had the most OP radar system. Longest single target kill was over 1000 km and it’s multi-lock capacity was unmatched. Didn’t need all that fancy “Top Gun” flying, when the thing could simply lock and kill entire enemy squadrons at a time. It was literally 1-sided in aerial superiority for more 30 years.

Hold on. There was a debate back in the day about which fighter jet was the better of the two. The F-14A’s had temperamental engines…got Revlon killed remember the side slip issue? Later when the D’s came out you did not even need a catapult to get off the flight deck …I kid you not. HONEST. With the better engines, the argument took on greater significance. What we needed ( I was working at the Naval Weapons Lab in Dahlgren, VA.,) was a few improvements in the Phoenix Missile…a little more money and time. The Phoenix was excellent if facing Soviet bombers, but it needed a few tweaks for advanced air to air BVR fighting and it already had the longest range of any missile. The F-15 was made by an aviation Dream Team! Just, EXCELLENT! I had friends who built the F-4 Phantom. Did you know actual blind people helped build the F-4😳⁉️⁉️ I speak the truth!! We had started working on the crew helicopter escape system too…the USA has thrown away more tech that any other nation has discovered…I am sure of this…I lived it…

When I was stationed abroad USS Nimitz CVN-68, the aviators told us how badass the F-14 was. Soon after, 2 F-14’s took out a few Syrian fighter jets over southwest Asia (March ‘86, not the first one in’81). Those men were our heroes. Doing supersonic flybys 😵‍💫😳👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🌎⚓️🇺🇸

Which sadly, was also their undoing. They had so much junk in the trunk that they didn't handle the catapults on the Nimitz-Class Carriers very well and the launch forces started breaking their backs. The lighter and newer planes didn't have a problem, but the F-14 had A LOT of inertia to overcome on that backend, and the end result was a couple cockpits flung into the ocean with the flight crews inside as the stress fractures reached critical.

The competition…! Check it:There was a debate back in the day about which fighter jet was the better of the two. The F-14A’s had temperamental engines…got Revlon killed remember the side slip issue? Later when the D’s came out you did not even need a catapult to get off the flight deck …I kid you not. HONEST. With the better engines, the argument took on greater significance. What we needed ( I was working at the Naval Weapons Lab in Dahlgren, VA.,) was a few improvements in the Phoenix Missile…a little more money and time. The Phoenix was excellent if facing Soviet bombers, but it needed a few tweaks for advanced air to air BVR fighting and it already had the longest range of any missile. The F-15 was made by an aviation Dream Team! Just, EXCELLENT! I had friends who built the F-4 Phantom. Did you know actual blind people helped build the F-4😳⁉️⁉️ I speak the truth!! We had started working on the crew helicopter escape system too…the USA has thrown away more tech that any other nation has discovered…I am sure of this…I lived it…

@@kiro9257 During the Iran-Iraq war the Iraqi air force refused to takeoff due to F-14s using Phoenixes to shoot down enemy fighters from beyond visual range. The idea that the Aim-54 had a extremely low chance to hit fighters is a just another myth. The F14 also had good enough maneuverability to get several gun kills in the Iran-Iraq war, the Iran F-14 pilots also lacked the Top Gun training that US navy pilots had.

The rest, mainly 40 airframes are kept in service and those have gone through very extensive overhaul, right down to zero-hour. Iran is more than capable to building and replacing the majority of the Tomcat's parts and does so whenever an airframe has to be sent back to workshop.

The f-14 tomcat is my favorite. My friends dad made parts for it. It was built by me and we use to here them test flying some jets at night when we had keg party’s. The sonic boom was so cool.
