You're only shocked at JJ McCarthy's progress if you never really watched him play. He has incredible arm strength, routinely made incredible throws, was an almost impeccable winner and fantastic leader. All while not getting the attempts he should have. His downsides are his deep ball accuracy being inconsistent and his delivery on clean pocket throws. He throws better off platform or on the run. Both of those things really are hard to tell anything substantive about because of his low attempts at Michigan. The flashes of raw talent though are completely undeniable and he had some of the best throws of any QB had in college over his tenure as starter.

Anyone that actually watched JJ play in college understands his ability. He reads defenses makes timely passes don’t turn the ball over is athletic and has the mentality of the greats .. If he was with a offensive coach in college he would’ve had Heisman numbers This dude sacrificed for his team and to win .. Highschool championships Big ten Championships College football national championship .. He will be successful in the nfl As a lions fan he scares me because he has a coach and talent that he can win with.. Not saying he wins Super Bowls but he will definitely be a franchise Qb

@@ChubsrealYT oh so you watched highlights ?? That’s my point hahah You watch dame highlights and think you know the full story.. And you are going to doc him because he has the arm talent to squeeze it into tight windows? Is that not a good thing? He had 44 touchdowns and 9 interceptions in 29 games the last 2 years Completed 72 percent of his passes last year .. On an offense that runs the ball his job was to complete 3rd downs and he did at an extremely high level.. And again you are wrong because he made adjustments in game situations and called audibles to beat the defense. Again watch it games and you will see that, Listen to the coaches talk after these games that say JJ made The calls .. I can’t wait for this Kid to make all you fake ass football fans look like they’re incompetent

As a Minnesota Vikings fan… I hope we do not play JJ McCarthy at all this season. Let him sit behind Sam, learn the offense and fix his mechanics. I don’t care if we lose every single game, let him sit until he’s completely ready. Edit: after watching his preseason debut… I semi-retract my statement. He seems to be advancing in his development in the offense quicker than I excepted. I still think Darnold should start week 1 but I think JJ will be ready by the end of the season if needed. Still think you shield the young QB and continue to mold him while he waits. Don’t throw him to the fire until he’s ready. Edit 2: fuck…

Cherry on top McCarthy is 21 years old. Compare McCarthy's season last season to any college QB ever of the same age. Factor in his attempts being low and what you will find is his trajectory will lead you to believe he is a number one overall pick calibur player at the average age of a QB entering the draft.

If you take the other top QB's drafted and look at their stats and compare them to JJ you will see he had significantly less attempts, a better completion percentage, a better yards per attempt and a comparable touchdown percentage. If Michigan let him throw the ball or his attempts were around 500 like these other guys instead of 322, he would have been in the running for number one overall pick and hes the youngest of the bunch. Beyond that his WR's werent exactly world beaters at Michigan. Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson were nice players but they arent on the level of elite WR's or even among the best of the big ten.

Ive often wondered how many great careers we've missed because of wrong place/wrong time. If you watched Tom Brady's career at Michigan, there's really Nothing there that would suggest to you that you're watching the greatest NFL QB, and one of the greatest American pro athletes, of all time. Chad Henne was a much better Michigan QB, for instance. And he didn't get to the NFL and take the job from Drew Bledsoe in camp... If he doesn't go in to replace Bledsoe when he does, he might have become a career back-up.

@@davidverlaney7764 It's a fair question, but it's important to note that the colleges don't get as much time with players as the pros do. These are full time students (well, some of them are anyway). Very few of these college QB's, even the best, come out as finished products. Drake Maye is a good example. He has A LOT of things to work on. What these teams are buying when they draft these QB high is the quality of the clay they have to mold.

JJ has demonstrated a great intellect, obsessive drive and all the physical attributes of a pro-typical starting QB in today's game. Additionally, the tape reveals an uncanny intuition on pocket awareness and associated movement. That said, this guy needs to finish consuming the entire playbook, and then incorporate the mental ingestion ON THE FIELD. That is a momumental task in an of itself, let alone doing so via condensed speedof 2.5 seconds versus7 seconds in camp in the pocket. None of this addresses the timing synergy with his mates. Mid-season at the earliest, full stop.

As a Eagles/Georgia Bulldogs fan I put my full support in JJ for his rookie year, I supported Bryce aswell but there’s a huge difference here The Vikings are a actual GOOD team JJ has a great Defense and amazing weapons to throw to unlike Bryce did JJ has a amazing Coaching staff unlike Bryce so I think he is a strong contender for OROY but I put 100% support onto my goat Brock Bowers’s for OROY

As a Vikings fan, looking at the mess the Jets were and the poor coaching there when Sam was there, and same can be said of the Panthers who gave had several QBs fail un their system, and after a year in SF, I am low key thinking Sam Darnold might just shock some people. Going back to what Mike starts the video off suggesting, where QBs land, the coaches and surrounding talent play a HUGE role in the success of a QB. Then fans see a QB struggle a bit and just blame him instead of looking at the larger picture. Who was his head coach? Who was his OC? Was there a lot of turnover in yhe coaches? Did they have good weapons and protection for the QB? In Sam Darnold's case . . . he has not had a fair chance. All the reasons Mike says the Vikings are good landing spot for a QB are valid and Sam Darnold is just as likely and maybe more likely to be the benefactor of that. Skol!

It’s kinda weird that in college being surrounded by great talent is viewed as a negative for your development while in the nfl it’s seen as a positive.

Used to be that it took a few years for a college QB to make the transition and now some get thrown in, due to money, right away ready or not.

Vikings fan in MN and I’m here to tell you rn I got no clue what you are talking about. No one is hyping him up here, we hope he’s good but everyone is cautiously optimistic and biting their tongue. There were other guys drafted before him for a reason. You gotta listen to the MN sports insiders

I wouldn’t call the commanders a desirable an situation. They probably have the worst or second worst roster in the league, and the dan Quinn and kliff kingsbury hires are extremely questionable when you look at who else was available, like they could’ve had Mike MacDonald bro

The idea that a QB at Michigan doesn’t need to do much and saying Michigan is going to drop off is crazy.

I see JJ's absolute ceiling as an Alex Smith type of player, but on the lower end I can see him being a Baker Mayfield type of player.

I see Tom Brady vibes. Like Brady J.J. has the willpower to make it happen. There's a reason his Michigan teammates love him. He practiced against the best defense in the country everyday and showed out. He ain't stopping at Alex Smiths ceiling. J.J.s said he's obsessed with being great. He ain't just happy to be here. After Michigan received their championship rings J.J. said "now it's time to get those real diamonds".

Hyped quarterbacks rarely live up to the billing. How much hype did Patrick Mahomes get? Even CJ Stroud wasn’t getting all the hype. It was Bryce Young.
