You're only shocked at JJ McCarthy's progress if you never really watched him play. He has incredible arm strength, routinely made incredible throws, was an almost impeccable winner and fantastic leader. All while not getting the attempts he should have. His downsides are his deep ball accuracy being inconsistent and his delivery on clean pocket throws. He throws better off platform or on the run. Both of those things really are hard to tell anything substantive about because of his low attempts at Michigan. The flashes of raw talent though are completely undeniable and he had some of the best throws of any QB had in college over his tenure as starter.

Anyone that actually watched JJ play in college understands his ability. He reads defenses makes timely passes don’t turn the ball over is athletic and has the mentality of the greats .. If he was with a offensive coach in college he would’ve had Heisman numbers This dude sacrificed for his team and to win .. Highschool championships Big ten Championships College football national championship .. He will be successful in the nfl As a lions fan he scares me because he has a coach and talent that he can win with.. Not saying he wins Super Bowls but he will definitely be a franchise Qb

On an offense that runs the ball his job was to complete 3rd downs and he did at an extremely high level.. As a Minnesota Vikings fan… I hope we do not play JJ McCarthy at all this season. Let him sit behind Sam, learn the offense and fix his mechanics. I don’t care if we lose every single game, let him sit until he’s completely ready. Edit: after watching his preseason debut… I semi-retract my statement. He seems to be advancing in his development in the offense quicker than I excepted. I still think Darnold should start week 1 but I think JJ will be ready by the end of the season if needed. Still think you shield the young QB and continue to mold him while he waits. Don’t throw him to the fire until he’s ready. Edit 2: fuck…

If Michigan let him throw the ball or his attempts were around 500 like these other guys instead of 322, he would have been in the running for number one overall pick and hes the youngest of the bunch. Beyond that his WR's werent exactly world beaters at Michigan. Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson were nice players but they arent on the level of elite WR's or even among the best of the big ten.

@kevinfessler68312 ай бұрын
@@davidverlaney7764 It's a fair question, but it's important to note that the colleges don't get as much time with players as the pros do. These are full time students (well, some of them are anyway). Very few of these college QB's, even the best, come out as finished products. Drake Maye is a good example. He has A LOT of things to work on. What these teams are buying when they draft these QB high is the quality of the clay they have to mold.

JJ has demonstrated a great intellect, obsessive drive and all the physical attributes of a pro-typical starting QB in today's game. Additionally, the tape reveals an uncanny intuition on pocket awareness and associated movement. That said, this guy needs to finish consuming the entire playbook, and then incorporate the mental ingestion ON THE FIELD. That is a momumental task in an of itself, let alone doing so via condensed speedof 2.5 seconds versus7 seconds in camp in the pocket. None of this addresses the timing synergy with his mates. Going back to what Mike starts the video off suggesting, where QBs land, the coaches and surrounding talent play a HUGE role in the success of a QB. Then fans see a QB struggle a bit and just blame him instead of looking at the larger picture. Who was his head coach? Who was his OC? Was there a lot of turnover in yhe coaches? Did they have good weapons and protection for the QB? In Sam Darnold's case . . . he has not had a fair chance. All the reasons Mike says the Vikings are good landing spot for a QB are valid and Sam Darnold is just as likely and maybe more likely to be the benefactor of that. Skol!

I see Tom Brady vibes. Like Brady J.J. has the willpower to make it happen. There's a reason his Michigan teammates love him. He practiced against the best defense in the country everyday and showed out. He ain't stopping at Alex Smiths ceiling. J.J.s said he's obsessed with being great. He ain't just happy to be here. After Michigan received their championship rings J.J. said "now it's time to get those real diamonds".

I love going through the comments to see all the couch coaches talk as if they know McCarthy better than anyone else

Hyped quarterbacks rarely live up to the billing. How much hype did Patrick Mahomes get? Even CJ Stroud wasn’t getting all the hype. It was Bryce Young.
