Honestly, it's very simple. Data means as revenue for these big companies in the short term. Targeted marketing means better conversion rates which creates more revenue for the company and bigger returns for investors. In the long term, the control in data plays directly towards artificial intelligence. With the exponential growth in machine learning and also in the AI world, data creates control, through the idea of streamlining everything through your new interface. Data means money. Money comes from controlling stakes wanting to know everything about you so they can continue to create more consumers without the concentrated effort of guerrilla marketing and big dollars being invested in marketing period. By giving us what we "want" by "anticipating" our needs, we're more likely to stay on their platforms and also converts time inside to physical sales. The government are in the data race for pure control through the biggest scam in the twentieth century: security. Security is now the government has slowly infringed and started taking away our civil liberties and online rights. Through data they can control the masses. They're fighting the tech companies because they won't give their biggest asset: their data of our data. The end of the world as we know it is upon us.
