My fondest memory of my paternal grandmother is watching Charlie Chan movies with her on Saturday afternoons.💓

So many of Charlie Chan’s quips get me to laugh out loud. Too funny! And, Mantan Moreland is right in his element. 😂

Billy, the Black Camel was such a treat. Thanks for verifying that that IS Dwight Frye!

I recognize Dwight Frye immediately. And here he’s in the same film with Bêla Lugosi like he was in Dracula.

@@CissyBrazilthe same year too, I thought I recognized Dwight Frye. And a young Robert Young that I almost didn't recognize.

The Chan films were almost never directed by anything more than average directors. But with The Shanghai Cobra the series found a first class director--Phil Karlson. He made his mark with a series of top notch noirs in the 50's Scandal Sheet, 99 River Street, Tight Spot, Hell's Island, Five Against the House, The Phenix City Story and and The Brothers Rico. Shanghai Cobra (1945) was shot while Karlson was still finding his style but just look at the first 6 minutes. PURE NOIR!!

I think the movie ads are really fun and add a lot to the Double Feature. Just wish I had a big dill pickle with the movie, like when I was a kid. Pickle for a nickel and 10cents for popcorn at the movie house when I was young..... Entry for daytime movies was $.25. More for ones at night.
@Billys-JointАй бұрын
Yes. Now you need a municipal bond to pay for popcorn. hehe

It is so good to see Bela Lagosi is a part not a you know what :) I also saw him in film where he played a lost man whose wife had disappeared years before. I always thought it was so unfair that Karloff (who is a good actor, too!), was held in such high regard and Bela wasn’t. But then, Karloff came from rich family and was English. Anyway, that’s what it feels like to me. Here’s to Bela Lagosi :) 🥂🌷🌱

The flicks are fun and funny as much as they are detective films. I looooove the ending wrap-up-the-case scenes.

I am so impressed with the writer of the Charlie Chan mysteries. Too sad he was gone so long ago. There is probably no footage of any interviews.

Is that the actor who played Remfeild in Dracula?
@Billys-JointАй бұрын
There were a few Renfields but this is the one that is famous, I do not see him in credits for Chucky Chan... Dwight Iliff Frye (born Fry; February 22, 1899 - November 7, 1943) was an American character actor of stage and screen. He is best known for his portrayals of neurotic, murderous villains in several classic Universal horror films, such as Renfield in Dracula (1931) and Fritz in Frankenstein (1931)
