Actually I disagree, Leto is just playing the character they wanted him to play. Blame the writers for fucking up the Joker. Leto was actually very committed to playing this role so much that he went method doing it and they said he even did some crazy shit behind the scenes. Unfortunately though Leto was only able to work with the material he was given. Had the writers actually written a good Joker and given him a good script for his lines then I have no doubt that Leto would have been able to pull it off. Personally though Heath and Jack will always be my favorite Jokers.

It's like you're completely forcing yourself to believe Leto didn't do nothing wrong and it was ALL the scrip's fault. The scrip didn't tell him to have a shitty laugh, the script most likely did not ordered him to have that weird deep forced voice in the Harley rescue scene, and the scrip, most certainly, (and definitely nobody) told Leto to do all that crazy shit he did when he was "preparing" for the role. He is a good actor, nobody can deny that, but it was clear even before the movie aired that Leto wasn't gonna do a good Joker . As someone said "playing a Jim carrey Drug lord". Bad visual characterization and scrip wise, sure, he was screwed, but what was up to him was also pretty damn bad. Easily the worst Joker.

Thats not entirely true, there are 3 main interpretations of the joker, all that are from comics. 1.) Is the goofy, practical jokes, joker. 2.) This movie was supposed to be completely different. Joker was supposed to show up at the end threatening the Squad to blow their heads up with Waller's trigger, he was supposed to be abusive towards Harley, more violent (he smashes a man's head with a hammer), Diablo was supposed to survive, Katana had a larger role where Enchantress brainwashes her, Harley and Deadshot had a romance subplot, Joker dropped Harley from the chopper instead of the explosion and most importantly Harley isn't an accomplice into Robin's murder since the reason why Joker has those metal teeth is that Batman smashed them after he killed Robin (and a lot of those tattoos on his body are a way to taunt and provoke him). That's why we always tell you to watch Zack Snyder's Justice League and not the other one. Suicide Squad got the same treatment and it made the movie so much worse than it actually was.

Leto is a fantastic actor, and I actually blame the studio more than him for how they had him portray the Joker. We've seen some many different variants of the Joker over the years, and it goes without saying this is by far the worst. I honestly believe had Leto taken the role in Nolan's Batman trilogy, he would've delivered just as masterful a performance as Heath Ledger. It would be an entirely different film, but I think under the direction of Nolan, Leto would've shined as Joker.
