I recall with pleasure hearing this sung by, probably one of the last of the travelling knife grinders.He was at the time plying his trade in Stoke-on-Trent in the mid seventies. In addition to the lilting, it was many verses long, the more ribald of which, I suspect, were of his own composition. Thanks for bringing back that memory to me :

I never knew that the vocals in some Irish songs was called lilting for quite some time and since then I've been scouring the net for better examples. And the algorythm doesn't dissapoint.

I am a little beggarman, a begging I have been nearly three score or more in this little isle of green. And up to the Lif-fey and down to Tess-a-gue and you know me by the name it is the bold old John-nie Dhu; Of all the trades that's going, ah sure begging is the best. For it's when a man is tired he can lay him down to rest. He begs for his dinner he's nothing else to do only cut around the corner with his fine old ric-a-doo.

Same tune as American fiddle tune Salt Creek. Thought this melody was very very familiar but I couldn’t put my finger on it.

Not quite the same, though that tune is closely related. The American name for this tune is "The Red-Haired Boy".

Love this wonderful version and perfect instrumentation. And yes this tune is also known as ‘Red Haired Boy’. It’s one of two tunes associated with Jolly Beggarman....Planxty and others sometimes use the alternate tune. Interesting how tunes are traded back and forth and make their way connected through centuries of time and place, bequeathed to us to play, enjoy and pass on.

Wonderful! What type of harp is Sophie playing please?
@Sophietheharp3 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if you're asking about the general type of instrument or the make/model, so I'll answer both. :) It's a so-called Celtic harp, sometimes also called Irish harp or lever harp, which is smaller than orchestral harps and uses levers instead of pedals to change semi-tones. This particular one is an old Aoyama (a Japanese maker) one with the romantic name "120".
