Toll houses are like Catholic purgatory and a false teaching. Are you saying god doesn't have control over are soul?
@johnsambo9379 Жыл бұрын
Anyone familiar with the basics of Orthodox theology understands that such a teaching should not be taken literally, but rather symbolically or figuratively. This is especially based on the patristic principle summarized by St. John of Damascus: "After death there is no repentance." Another principle states that "every soul will be judged based on the state it is in at the moment of death." And finally, nowhere in the Christian tradition does it say that demons will judge souls after death, nor angels, but it is God who is "the judge of all the earth." Toll house literalists usually believe these doctrines, but the more detailed toll house visions contradict these teachings if taken literally. Demons do not only accuse in these visions, as many assert, but they pronounce the judgment as well. And sometimes the defending angel will try to convince the demon that the soul has repented. But if the soul had repented, it would not have been accused, therefore it is teaching that either the soul can repent after death, or the angel and demon are play-acting. Clearly such visions, if true, have another meaning besides a literal meaning.

You also indicated that these scriptures don't negate the concept of the soul's journey. But are there scriptures that directly support the soul's journey? Is the concept purely a product of tradition? I don't mean to be critical here--I ask out of a genuine desire to know more... :)

Jude comes to mind, where it discusses the "dispute between Michael and Satan over the body of Moses". This is an extremely mysterious text outside of Patristic teaching. But within Patristics we know it refers to this assault by the demons at the moment of death. A good resource is Fr. Seraphim Rose's "The soul after death". There's an audiobook version on youtube for free.

Excellent comment. I’m in the same place as you. There was some good content in the video but a few loose ends. Father Josiah could have spoken more about the 40 days (I don’t know any Scriptural basis for that) and the toll houses (again, not from Scripture). If one depends on patristics for “the truth” one ends up all over the place. I often think there is a danger of mythologising the Faith by adding to it doctrines of men. I so nearly became an orthodox Christian but have been put off by a number of (what are to me) unscriptural practices such as the veneration of the Theotokos, relics, etc and the insistence by some that there is no salvation outside the Orthodox Church. Yet I also see the inventions of the Protestant reformation (e.g. the Eucharist as merely symbolic) as equally troubling.
@anastunya Жыл бұрын
The forty days are biological, so doesn’t have to have a passage in scripture. It’s written in the human body. The grieving family is greatly helped by the forty days as well as the transforming soul. It also takes forty days for the mother and baby to recover from childbirth.(also part of Chinese tradition) Forty days for a simple fracture to join. Forty days of prayer fasting once a year is a very successful spiritual program mostly lost to the West. There are most likely more illiterate people in Heaven than scholars, so Sola Scriptura can’t be true.
@countryboyred Жыл бұрын
@@malindsellThe traditions of the Church as held in the same regard as scripture itself. That’s a big point of contention between Protestants and Orthodox. We view Holy Tradition as every bit as holy as Holy Scripture. After all, who do you think put the scriptures in a uniform canon? The Bible didn’t fall out of the sky. It was put together by the Church through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. And it isn’t “traditions of men”. It’s traditions given to us by God through the apostles themselves unto the present day.

Just as it is not proper to add the word "immediately" to the various Scriptures cited, neither is it appropriate to expand those verses into an indeterminate journey. Something happens, that much is assured from the story of the rich man and Lazarus, but whether that happens in a moment or in a longer period of time is not revealed there. It also needs to be noted that the Orthodox funeral service does not speak of a journey but simply describes the one who has died as "departed this life." We would be wise to be as equally reserved in what we say regarding one who has died.

Fr. with all due respect and forgive my ignorance, but it seems you are arguing from silence just because the word “immediately” isn’t included in the verses you brought up. I heard no argument for a long journey of the soul either. Even the description of St. Anthony’s vision. The souls moving past the Satan with no anxiety or concern, moving upwards doesn’t describe this long journey. On the contrary, seems what Paul is describing. Where does this tradition come from? Thank you.

It’s like a journey but he didn’t say as to where the non believers or fake Christians end up? Do they just remain in ground or in the earthly realm awaiting judgment? Do the believers go to heaven? What does he mean by Journey? I thought the whole point of the earthly life WAS the journey.

So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their *sleep* O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, *until thy wrath be past* that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, 👉till my change come. ... His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them. {Job 14:10, 12-14 & 21} And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my *flesh* shall I see God. {Job 19:26} Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. {The Preacher 9:10} Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. {Psalm 146:3-4} Then said his disciples, Lord, if he *sleep* he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, "Lazarus is dead." {John 11:12-14} ... Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection 👉at the last day. Jesus said unto her, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet *shall* he live:" {John 11:24-25} But go thou thy way till the end be: for *thou shalt rest* and stand in thy lot *at the end of the days* {Daniel 12:13} For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him *should not perish* but have everlasting life. {John 3:16} And *the serpent said* unto the woman, *Ye shall not surely die* {Genesis 3:4} Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down *in the midst of the stones of fire* {Isaiah 28:14} ^ (satan always turns the tables on God, for he is the father of lies.) The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; {Isaiah 33:14-15} If anyone errors in their understanding of this doctrine of the dead, then they will in no way be led to the understanding of the truth, for it will be a stumblingblock unto the decernment of spiritual things, including soilterology and eschatology.

6:36 I cannot subscribe to that interpretation in good conscience, for I would feel dishonest reading those words of St Paul in this way. According to the Orthodox Church, Christ’s baptism was A) a prefigurement of His death and resurrection, ie., the defeat of hell and B) a revelation of the Trinity-the Father spoke from Heaven, the Son was baptized, the Spirit descended in the form of a dove. Christ was not baptized for the dead according to Orthodox teaching. St. John’s baptism was for repentance according to the New Testament. Christian Baptism-Baptism “into Christ”-into His death and Resurrection-did not exist prior to Christ’s establishment of His Church. Christian water Baptism in the Name of Father, Son & Holy Spirit is what unites us to Christ in His Church.

You are quoting someone "Saint Anthony" who seems to have had a dream and you take it at face value not knowing if it's just a regular dream like everyone else's and we are suppose to think that is real and should become doctrine????? That's why there is so many today claiming to dream while in heaven or hell and are making tons of money. I'm shocked that the church would follow someone's dream. Oh you might say it's a Saint, well let me remind you that the Bible calls all believers saints and it's not up to a church or pastor to make it ordain someone to be a Saint. Bible is clear and makes distinction from a believer and a non believer and the believers are called saints and there many examples on this in the Bible. I would much rather listen to Paul when he says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord just like the Bible tells us, the blinking of an eye. I agree with many of the Orthodox doctrines but there are some that are unbiblical.

For the wages of sin is death; (not hell;) but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. {Romans 6:23} Turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha *into ashes* condemned them with an overthrow, making them *an ensample* unto those that after should live ungodly; {2 Peter 2:6} Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are *set forth for an example* suffering the vengeance of *eternal fire* {Jude 1:7} (Sodom is not still burning, so it is not the fire / punishment that is eternal, but rather the consequences thereof.) And ye [the saints] shall tread down the wicked; for *they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet* in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts. {Malachi 4:3} Thou [satan] hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and *I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth* in the sight of all them that behold thee. {Ezekiel 28:18} Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such *the second death* hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. {Revelation 20:6} And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. *This is the second death* And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. {Revelation 20:14-15} What do you imagine against the LORD? He will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time. {Nahum 1:9}

Make up stories about how it's going to be easy? You just based your entire theology of the after life upon a dream.

Practice humility if you don't know what you speak of.
