Yay joy!!! I like the marshmallow analogy and I can relate to this in a work decision. It reminds me to set up some structure and have better planning

These are on point every week. So helpful for me right now, especially when I remembered that I saw some translations call hexagram 58 “self-indulgence”, which fits perfectly with the marshmallow analogy. I know I can totally get caught in self-indulgence and make things harder for myself in the long term

Thank you so much for sharing that. Absolutely, too much pleasure takes us into that self-absorbed place where we lose connection with our special contribution we are here to make. 🙏

Thanks as always! The big idea for this week seems to be to experience joy through effort and discipline, which is basically the concept of "flow" in psychology -- a more limited and specific term in that discipline than it is colloquially -- so I recommend anyone who is interested to read the nonfiction book Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It is a life-changing book, and densely packed with ideas that are in complete alignment with the I Ching in the way that any deep wisdom tends to be. Despite "flow" having a slightly different meaning as a psychological term, it nevertheless dovetails perfectly with the idea of controlling the flow of one's energies in hexagram 60. I think this week I might try to read Csikszentmihalyi's book on creativity and flow specifically.

Wow thank you for sharing that. I am a huge fan of Csikszentmihalyi's work and have use flow concepts along with the I Ching for a business tool I co-created many years ago. My view is that I Ching is all about keeping us in a flow state as the variables change around us. 😃
