This actually went up on the WoT Console channel a couple of years ago, but it seems not too many people go there. So, re-posting here. Although this primarily refers to World of Tanks, the problems inherent in research applies to basically any game or even scale modelling.
Since this video was made, the priorities in game design and balance may have changed.
The address for that bookstore, by the way.

Watching these videos while modelling, I find a lot of relatable points. In particular, the contradictory nature or patchiness of sources when recreating things that are hard to find or don't exist any more.

Glad you had the qualifier in there about the operator manuals. don't know about then but in the 90's I was an instructor at Ft Gordon, we had new equipment coming out. We were given copies of the proposed Technical Manual to review, and promptly found all sorts of errors between what the manual said and what existed in the equipment. Dimensions, weights, all sorts of things. We wrote detailed critiques which were promptly ignored ... hope things were better back then.

I'm gonna make an unpopular statement, and stress the importance of archived information like effects of mold on 2.5 ton trucks in the Pacific theater for the long term storage and readiness of equipment, like the storing of equipment in Norway or other locations in the event of large scale war. Not interesting or relevant to war gaming, but interesting and relevant to real world.

I really think the M4A3 76W HVSS is a wonderful topic: Later version of the upper glacis, Ford GAA engine, T23 turret, 76mm gun M1, Wet ammunition stowage, and Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension. There are so many interesting things that have not been covered yet in this channel. And it could be an excellent comparison to the British Firefly.

The thing is, Wargaming has introduced the main battle tank 70 in WoT, all information is available, for example, that the tank reaches about 60 kmh with 1500 hp, so really really fast, BUT he only reaches 50 kmh has only 800 hp and reaches the 55 kmh once every 5 battles. In short, all the information was there, but it makes the tank worse even though it is underbalanced, but why...

Of all tank simulators I've played only two: 1) old 1980s "Abrams Tank" (I guess, that was the name), it's pretty much unplayable now, as the speed of the game was tight not to the timer, but to the clock speed of the processor, imagine the difference of speed of 286 processor and modern multicore CPU - when you try to traverse a turret, it spins like a propeller on a helicopter. Thus the only was is to use special software to emulate old PC or throttle your processor several hundreds of times down in speed. 2) T-72 "Balkans on Fire" Anyway, even there games were sort of arcades, still games, I'm not a big fan or real simulators.

Nicholas, thanks for posting your video, great stuff. I have a few questions: 1. I came across of some of whole bunch of your bootlegged videos in other language of you reviewing WWII fighters like P-51, P-38 and ect. Can you point me in a detection of where you have them. I tried to poke around this channel with "no joy"... 2. I do have interest in WWII aviation as much as in tanks, but for the life of me I can't find CREDIBLE statistics on Causalities and Victories, or perhaps sorties flown of WWII broken down by countries and aircraft type. For Example I know that P-51 shut down around 5000 German aircraft, while for a loss of 3000 P-51, and ect. It is interesting for me to compare where was more German fighter losses in the Easter front or Western front, in perspective of how many Soviets aircraft losses. The reason is that lately a lots of Russians trying to diminish Allies contribution into defeating Hitler in WWII prior operation Overlord.(I know, its not a novel debate, but never the less very interesting subject). BTW any input from anybody greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I can agree with the fun to a game... World of tanks is more of a fun arcade shooter than full on simulation. Moving over to War Thunder, I learnt that the hard way. In world of tanks, traverse speeds as well as track speeds are all enhanced so you can rush in at speed and play it almost like an FPS. Moving over to realistic battles in War Thunder though and I spent the first several hours of gameplay dying a lot. Rush in in world of tanks and you can often win. Rush in with War Thunder and its likely that you get sniped from over a kilometer away as unlike world of tanks where enemies can be hidden only a hundred or so meters away until they're detected, with war thunder, it's pure line of sight. Doesn't matter if the tank is 3 kilometers away... If there is no intervening terrain, you will be seen. All that in mind, War thunder is a nice in-between game between the arcade of World of Tanks and the pure simulation of Steel Beasts.

Now if only my local town council were as blind, I could buy myself a tank and park it behind my 4ft high hedge.

I do not play this particular game, but very much love how this Major (retired) has so accurately identified so many of the so-called "grognards"...the self-proclaimed "experts" who have never been closer to a battlefield environment than the dark environs of an air conditioned movie house. Have been involved in wargaming since 1960, in one form or another, and have helped research for many games, by some great people who did not know where to look. Have learned so much from this series in the "Chieftain's Hatch".. Thank you so much. (2/503rd, Ranger, U.S.Army...Info analyst.)etc, blah,blah,blah.

i love how they talk about removing fv4202 because of wrong armor values compared to the real tank, but that wg is still able to release "paper" tanks like the 268 v4(version broken) armor values frontally better than maus top speed greater than some t10 meds as well as the hp/t to achieve such speeds under average dpm and accuracy but sufficient dpm and armor to face people at a range of 50m or less. generally just a broken tank like we have tanks in this game like the grille 15(not historically accurate but still terrible because fuck german tanks) trades in all of it's armor and a bit of speed to have a what in-game looks like an amazing gun, but only really works on stationary targets when you factor in "hidden/soft" stats tanks.gg/compare/obj-268-4?t=grille-15~m48-patton~e-50-m~maus

+Oliver Kromann You can just bet that if the FV4202 were a Soviet tank it wouldn't have gone anywhere, but as it was a decadent capitalist British tank it was therefore entirely fair game for the chop.

Steel Beasts is not fun not just because it's a simulation. But more because of it lacks of fun playable contents. I haven't play the game for years. They may added some more contents today that I don't know of. But when I was still playing it. There were only a handful repetitive single missions in that game and there was no campaign. And a mission in Steel Beasts is not even a game, its more like an exam you're taking. It just set up a scenario that you need to fight through. And at the end you get a statistic score. I remember playing this mission: something like stopping a Russian attack on this European map by using a couple Leopard 2 tank companies. I spend like 2~3 hrs in the mission and at the end I got something like a score of 75. What that means I don't know. I have no interests to find out. Then I opened the next mission. It's the same scenario but changed my tanks to M1A1. So it like the same exams, you just repeat them again and again. Or if you use the mission editor, you just create your own exam to test yourself. I wasn't a good student, so yeah, definitely not a big fan. I played sim games since Jane's Longbow Apache. My point is, even't it is a military sim game, there can still be objectives in the mission and progression through the missions.

"Japanese heavy tanks will not have Maus-levels of armor" Haharharharhar good one
@anther4520

And then they nerfed the Tier 5 Japanese superheavy by halving it's top speed and removing its top gun, and in so doing completely ruined what was actually a fairly half-decent tank that wasn't especially super-OP at all, at least not like its higher tier cousins all are.
