In 1964, popular music was going through a seismic transition. Only adults were watching and listening to artists like Judy. TV execs are impressed only by how many people are watching. Today, I'm sixty years older than I was then and recognize how valuable those shows were and are, a point of view I didn't have then, when I was nine.

for me it is definitive - @10.01 when she throws her hand through her hair i am transported to another place - she possess the song - or the song possess her! - I have watched this countless times - her every movement - hugging herself - i’d love to know what colour her dress was - and all in front of Liza - and then within seconds straight into ‘Together’ with Liza - and broadcast 5 days before JFK in Dallas

I completely agree about her styling. I've read she was never fussy about her hair or costumes during the run of the series as many may be. Arguably she was at her most beautiful and her voice was remarkable. Personally, I agree, her appearance and voice were never the same after her series. Judy was a gift from God.

Jerry really wasn't needed on the program-but CBS *had* to use him in some capacity, as he was under contract to the network {he previously hosted a summer game show for them, "PICTURE THIS"}, so they thought using him as "comedy relief" would be perfect for Judy. He wasn't. He was dismissed after 11 episodes.

The Judy Garland Show was on CBS Sunday night at 9 opposite "Bonanza". She beat Bonanza in the ratings in the big urban areas, but outside the big city metros Bonanza slaughtered her in the ratings. I guess when you put a great singer performing Gershwin against a bunch of cowboys, which show do you think the rural viewers will pick?

There is not one salvageable Jerry can Dyke scene in any of the Judy TV series. I wouldn’t mind him being excised from every scene. Those idiots at CBS were in the wrong jobs. Who could think a relative unknown (and terrible) comic would elevate the show in any way. However, glad to have these digitally forever in regard to Judy (and in this case Liza).

I keep thinking about how the comedy was and how brilliant Judys singing and acting was, and George Schlatter (I think Judy's show was the first time he produced a show for TV) and did not know what to make of Jerry Van Dyke except that James (the smiling cobra) Aubrey insisted that Jerry be a part of the show. Jerry's only claim to anything funny was the Lone ranger sketch which was not half bad, and I found myself chuckling at the absurdity of it. Since Tv variety were of a compartmentalization style nature with different segments that an audience could look forward to each week (Judy's show eventually took that on, until her last producer Bill Colleran said just let the lady do what she does best and sing, and the ratings picked up dramatically) like Judy's trunk segment/tea for 2 segment/ medley segment etc. I think if instead trying to give Jerry, Lucille ball schitck to do and fail miserably trying to integrate him into the show as a key comedy leading player, it might have been more successful to give Jerry his own segment of a 5 minute condensed old time radio show funny pantomine, and maybe 10 mintues if a guest star like Mickey Rooney who was insanely comical wanted to join jerry. It is a shame that someone as brilliant as George Schlatter was (he went on to produce "Laugh In") did not conceive of something like this to appease the network executive morons and at the same time make the show work.

Totally agree. He is HORRIBLE! This is The Judy Garland Show! Judy doesn’t need a cohost she is EVERYTHING! The show becomes practically unwatchable when he’s on. Like a pest that won’t go away. If I’m wanting to fast forward when he’s on, imagine what viewers back then felt when they had to sit through it! After her tremendous TV specials , I’m sure viewers were not expecting to turn in to The Judy Garland Show and sit through his dreck. I’d change the channel when he was on

@mike48877
@mike48877 7 ай бұрын
Judy's makeup artist at MGM was Dorothy (Dottie) Ponedel, circa early 40's and beyond. You can Google her. I believe she did Judy's makeup for MEET ME IN ST LOUIS (1944), which Minnelli directed. Minnelli is credited with lovingly photographing Judy. She, herself said that that was the first time she ever liked her appearance on screen. 🌈

@@519forestmonk9 IMO, it was sunk by having a staff that didn't know Judy well, what she was capable of, what would be the best format and material for her. Lesser talents than Judy- (Perry Como, Andy Williams, Danny Kaye, Dinah Shore)- showed that great TV success requires great management.

I'm a Super Fan of Judy Garland and of Liza Minelli in her Early Career ... Till Cabaret that is ... Liza had a great voice on this show ... After Cabaret she Ruined her Vocal Chords by Belting her Songs to the point of Screaming ... Watch her Rendition of " New York New York " and you can see how she damaged her voice ... Sadly Judy's Show only lasted one season ... Choosing Jerry Van Dyke As the Permanent Comedic Relief IMHO was A mistake ... The only funny bit he did was the Lone Ranger Sketch ... Albeit being too long ... Most of his interactions with Judy and the other Guests just didn't work ... He tried too hard ... Comedy should be effortless ... CBS really treated Judy Terribly ... They Should have given her the 9pm Slot on a Saturday ...Not At 9pm On Sunday Opposite Bonanza ... Anyone Playing Opposite Bonanza would have been Destined to Fail ... Television Disrespected Miss Judy Garland ... She was so Beloved by her Fans Worldwide ...
