I think what makes Gilda so special ( aside from her comic genius of course) is the absolute joy that radiates from every character through her 1000 megawatt smile. I think she shares this quality with another beloved comic from the era, Steve Martin.

Fun Fact: Gilda Radner broke one of her ribs during the dress rehearsal throwing herself into the door. She didn't have time to go to the doctor before the show and didn't want the sketch cut so she did it again during the live broadcast, broken rib and all.

Molly Shannon's Mary Catherine Gallagher character owes a directly traceable debt to this woman and this character. When we lost Gilda Radner, the world lost a truly irreplaceable person. How much more could she have done were it not for the cancer that took her from us far too soon? RIP, Gilda, and thank you.

The best thing about this is imaginativeness of the character. No computer, no tv, no cellphone, no social media. Just a little girl living in her head. I remember my little cousin “anchoring” a tv news broadcast with her partner, “Baby Jennings” (Peter Jennings was then anchoring ABC) and doing much the same kind of thing. Gilda was so sweet.
