Stories of martyrdom break me on a level that nothing else seems to. I believe it's is because it shines a harsh light on my own cowardice. I would jump in front of a bullet for my wife, but I struggle to have such confidence that I would carry a cross towards certain death. Side note: knowing my own temperament, I believe I'd have been on the die of taking up arms. Fortunately, I don't believe we would be judged necessarily on which we chose but rather the motives behind our choice. I don't believe we have to be perfect, only righteous.

What John is saying around 17:40 rings true for me and I think about the battle of Helm’s Deep, where Legolas tells Aragorn “they’re all going to die!” and Aragorn says that he’ll die as one of them. Poignant. And, I think, all of us know instinctively that Aragorn’s commitment to fight the impossible battle is the right thing.

this is good. this is very good. I'm impressed that a man who considers himself a "warrior" would rather be a martyr, given certain conditions. this (to me) shows that your faith is greater than your "warrior", which is one of the things I was concerned about in yall.

Years ago at a Christian conference, Aquire the Fire, Jim Elliott's son was. A speaker. The man who killed his father was there with him. I can't remember his name. The examples he uses from The Mission certainly are Roman Catholic. It would be interesting if he talked, too, about Protestant martyrs, Eastern Orthodox martyrs, the martyrs from before the Great Schism.... What appreciated here was John's ability to see that real martyrdom is not passive defeat but courageous self-offering. All the great martyrs were formed, developed, and equipped for this courageous service as much as those trained to justly apply lethal force with weapons. Christian martyrdom is a bloody business and the farthest thing possible from fearful avoidance of deadly conflict. This is the first time I've heard anyone in the prepper/self-sufficiency/weapons training community who has ever articulated a clear and faithful understanding of this. No facile claim that being trained in the use of lethal force requires its use in every case. Christ and His justice might faithfully require a different witness. This is extremely helpful for me as a sacramental Christian and a man growing in capacity to fight and protect. I'm curious which martyrs you find embody the strength John is talking about. @@Hunterr8

Knowing "Why" you fight informs "How" you fight, but neither of these depend upon (or determine) whether you will be victorious. Plus, how often in history have people known whether they would win? Far too many David v Goliath battles to depend on that. And if you are a Christian, you merely have to do what God leads you to do. And that may include getting out of that mission in the first place (or not). God is a Challenger.

Let’s say for children that are under 11 or 12 because I feel like after that age the items would dramatically change. I know it’s important to try to keep their lives as normal as possible so I’ve packed a couple of toys and stuffed animals for them. Comfort items. I feel like that’s important for them to have.

The Baltic, Finnish and Polish experience and history says that the conqueror respects strength. And historically the civilian casualties in general have been far lower after a total resistance defeat than just no resistance capitulation. As a conqueror I would see those who resisted as valuable and try to leverage that society for my own gain but those who just surrendered I may just see as free extra workforce with potential dissidents among them. And then there are stories about what the Great Khan did and how he conquered. Where the options and history i previously mentioned were basically reversed.

If someone is specifically coming for us because of our faith, I would lean on the example set by the disciples. They did not fight their way out of their situation, but rather did their best to spread the Good News with the time they were allotted. If a government or group is engaging in general tyranny, then I think it can be appropriate to resist with force for the good of your community and your family.
