I feel like John Lawrence's character always had a heart deep down. Even when Kreese says the ever famous "sweep the leg" line, Johnny looks at him like he's insane. Before cobra kai I used to dislike Johnny but the writers did a really nice job of giving his character depth and potential that makes you want to root for him.
@coomingnotgoing9043 жыл бұрын
the funny thing is, sweeping the front leg is a completely legal and fair move, so he really doesn’t have any reason to be shocked by that
@alenciaga213 жыл бұрын

@coomingnotgoing9043 жыл бұрын
@@alenciaga21 If attacking Daniel’s weak leg was a concern to him, he wouldn’t have hit Daniel’s hamstring after Daniel threw him down at about 2:12. Johnny wasn’t fighting dirty until the elbow on the second to last clash. Gotta remember, this is basically a sport, and competitors exploit their opponents weaknesses all the time in any sport.
@alenciaga213 жыл бұрын
@@coomingnotgoing904 Yes he obviously did what Kreese told him to do. He would have been stupid not to... And maybe he was also angry that Daniel stood up again and again. Because he knew he needed to win to impress Kreese. There was no "I did my best" for Kreese. But I think he didn't really want to. That's why he congratulates Daniel immediatly and stands up to Kreese after the tournament.
@coomingnotgoing9043 жыл бұрын
@@alenciaga21 Oh I agree with that 100%, just my original point was that it’s kind of interesting that he had doubts about doing something perfectly legal and clean like a front leg sweep. Obviously Kreese got in his head and made him think he needed to win at any cost, or else he wouldn’t have done that elbow bs, but that was only at the end that he got desperate. I personally think it would’ve been more convincing for Kreese to tell him to re-injure Daniel’s leg and have *that* be when Johnny started showing doubt.

For years, I had always thought (assumed) maybe they filmed Daniel's 'crane' stance & kick *_separately from_* Johnny's lunge forward, his head snapping back & then falling to the floor...and then during editing they had spliced the two together, making it look like Daniel really _did_ hit Johnny in his head.

@MorganKing958 ай бұрын
It's not that much of a plot hole when you take into account the amount of time that has passed. At this point, they're on equal level, and Johnny is still at the peak of his life despite the loss. By the time Cobra Kai takes place however, he's been choked by Kreese, has had a turbulent relationship with Shannon, lost his mother (which affects his relationship with both Shannon and Robby), lost his privileged life, has a dead-end job, and hit the midlife crisis. Meanwhile, Daniel's life is pretty much the opposite. It therefore makes sense that he would become jealous and bitter towards Daniel, who was also never his friend, but rival If the second movie opened with Johnny being a sore loser however, then I would agree with your statement

people in 1984 would never expect these two to resurrect their rivalries around 30 years later and then become the best of frenemies

i was blessed to grow up in the 80's... When Hollywood cared more about the people watching their movies than the people making their movies. Awesome decade and an even more awesome movie. Long love Mr. Myagi

My favorite scene of any movie I have ever watched. I'm 45 & everytime I have watched this, probably 100 times, I always get out of my seat & jump up and down. I did it in the theater when I was about 6 years old & do it to this day!

I wonder if an ending scene ever have been so important for a movie’s status as a classic? Watched this as a kid in the 90’s and this is what I remember. They got it as right as they could get it and still epic today

When this came out I was 11. Every weekend I would go see this at the dollar theatre in Amarillo Texas. Sometimes back to back. Saw it like 20 times in the theatre. I had a huge crush on Allie. Walking out of the theatre at the end are days I will always remember. CLASSIC movie.
