Excellent, real user, really thorough and comprehensive review. Most reviews don't have the presenter as familiar with the product and can offer the kind of insight you did here. Field use and separate maintenance with your own tips. B/c the ceramic filter will crack it shouldn't be used in temps lower than 36 degrees. The same is true for all types of filters except nylon pre-filters that filter out only large particles above 40 microns. Thank you very much.

Your welcome. Exactly. This review defines the difference and usefulness of a real user review, showing how to use and CARE for for your gear. It makes the watcher decide if they want that gear based on the real use/care realities they need to understand and live with. I can't watch a review like unboxings, and first time use type vids anymore. Because you may always need to boil water to purify it for some reason the larger SS metal pot is as important as a knife/poncho/firesteel/lighter.

hey John. the a top and bottom caps are made of stainless steel. the cylinder is made of 2 parts. 1 a stainless steel sleeve and a plastic coating. the 1 I have is an older unit so they might have changed since then. don't worry about looking up the prize I know how much it is. the going rate now is 300 dollars. yes that is very expensive. but you get a lifetime to use out of them.

I've had & use the Combi attached to my kitchen sink for more than 10 years & never had any trouble with it. Yes, I periodically clean it, however, I've never run a bleach/water solution through it during the cleaning process, something I'm going to do the next time I clean it. I especially liked the 2nd part where you showed the innards & the step by step cleaning process.

I watched this this morning. I'm really impressed with it's simplicity and seeming toughness. Is that cast aluminum? Looks bomb proof. The simpler the better, in some things, huh? I don't suppose you know what it costs these days, do you? Guess I could look it up. That would be simple enough. Thanks Bob. You got a winner here.

Thanks for your videos mon ami! You have been a great help with your tried & true experience. I did look at Sawer products & it came down to Katadyn & Sawyer. I went Katadyn. I think Katadyn is perfect for long term overnight travels & Sawyer is perfect for daily trekking due to weight issues. After mountain climbing for the 1st time in 20 yrs this weekend I now understand the importance of cutting weight-it adds up quickly & can prove to be a hinderance. you got my sub! Thanks again.

Bob, I was using KDF filtered water from my shower that gave a chemically after taste, when I switched to the unfiltered tap in the kitchen the after taste went away, the water tastes great. I'll say its the KDF filter causing the problem. I emailed Katadyn & they confirmed the filter was for use with tap water so imagine my horror - I bought the filter for traveling & filtering tap water as much as for natural sources in Charmonix, France. Tired of buying bottled water. Happy trails mon ami...

yes I have. it does have an aftertaste the first couple of uses. I tried running a couple gallons of water through it but it still had it. after a while is not as bad. next time you filter your water and put it in your container. shake your water bottle to lose a lot of bubbles in there. I seen a lot of people do it. it helps put oxygen back in the water and reduces the taste so it doesn't taste so flat. I hope that made sense.
@Bob808Knight11 жыл бұрын
thank you brother. and thanks about to tip too. it makes sense if the ceramic filter freezes the ice will expand and crack it. I'm going to have to check the manufacturer site see if they say anything about this. for some reason I bet they don't.

Bob - Have you ever used activated carbon/charcoal as a final filter medium for the taste. There's a bad after taste after using my katadyn pocket - guessing its the ceramic filter I'm tasting. If so, is it possible to use activated charcoal for aquariums? Thanks dude...
@MrJoeyBoombotz11 жыл бұрын
With the Katadyn you do know if you check to see it isn't cracked. because of the ceramic and silver. The SS pot is in case it cracks. The huge benefit is not having to carry around or rely on a 'dirty' container to get water with, then have another to filter it into and/or drink it. We always need containers in the woods and it is waste to have to have a dedicated one to dip into steams. You can even drink straight from the other straw if you have one and need to.

Hi Bob ... so glad I found your video ... I have the exact same filter I bought 25 years ago ... haven't been used much ...life happens... your presentation was very helpful from all angles ... yes Katadyn has made improvements plus the option of an in-line activated filter accessory which does help with taste for sure ... I've read other comments about missionaries in Africa extracting water from some very sketchy ponds with no problems but it's your call ... I'm also trying the new Grayl purifier which guarantees removing chemicals & pesticides too as I live in an agricultural rich area with streams containing a lot of run-off from farmers fields that's been sprayed ... all reviews I've seen recommend them both ... thanks a bunch !

that is very interesting I did not know that.have you tried any of the Sawyer filtration products.I recently switched over to the Sawyer squeeze I have been very happy with it. I have not tried it on tap water yet..I've never tried KDF on on tap water either.I'm going to do that when I get home tonight. I wonder if I will l have the same problem with both my water filters.of course I use well water so this ought to be interesting. Actually I think you gave me an idea for a video.

great video Bob, I got exactly the same unit, my questions are: according to the manual not necessary to use sterilising liquids but I notice you're using bleach, is it better this way? and the second question, can I dry the ceramic under the sun? I'm living in Indonesia, very humid here 80-90% humidity, I haven't used this unit for a couple of years, I forgot to clean it the last time I used it a couple of years ago, is there any additional thing(s) to clean it that I need to be aware of? Thanks Bob

First I have to apologize for how long I took me to reply. Things have been awful interesting here in the Midwest. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. As I am not an expert on the katadyn. I can only answer for my experience. I have several different water filter systems and I do use bleach to clean all of them. I've never had a problem with it yet. Knock on wood.. remember the filter is ceramic. You can dried in the Sun but there is a slim chance it might crack. Although I've never had it happen. What I do is put mine on my desk in my air-conditioned office. The humidity level in here is usually between 35 and 40%. It takes about two days to dry completely.. Now about the question of not cleaning it after using it 2 years ago. Honestly I don't bacteria or a virus could last that long. I was still break it down and give it a thorough cleaning. I would be mainly concerned about the O-rings going dry. You're going to want to lubricate those.. I really hope this information answered your question. You might also want to check the katadyn website. They've got a real helpful. Question and answer page. Or at least they did the last time I checked. Thank you so much for your comment and have an awesome weekend.

I agree with you brother. I like to use a product for quite a while before I do a video it. it is a good idea to boil water even though you filter it because you never know

You use bleach to clean the filter? Isn't that bad for the silver lining in the filter?
@Bob808Knight5 жыл бұрын
Do not use concentrated bleach... What I do is mix a cap with 16 oz of distilled water... Then I rinse it out with distilled water and let it sit and dry of course.. I hope that answered your question..If you have anymore please feel free to ask...Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you..For some reason I'm not getting my alerts anymore that I have a new comment...

But I still carry the Katadyn if I go somewhere the water is questionable....thanks for your comment brother have a great week.
