Your discussion of the distinctive odors resulting from handling metals got my inner geek going as a retired chemist. It turns out this phenomenon is well known, and is the result of certain metal ions (mostly Fe2+ AND Cu+) oxidizing lipid peroxides found in skin oils. (Metals themselves are not volatile, so cannotmreally have an odor.) There are indeed a few peer reviewed publications on this topic. The characteristic "smell of blood" associated with handling certain metals is apparently due to 1-octene-2-one, which humans can detect at very low airborne concentrations. People associate the smell with handled metals, but in reality it is (regrettably) a form of metal-induced body odor. Go figure. I'd never thought I'd learn this as a result of a fountain pen show. How did that happen!? 🤔

Typo-- it should be 1-octene-3-one...

I’ve been using wax seals since college days in the 1970s and had a small stash of wax from that era. When I use the old wax, those seals tend to be the ones that get pulverized. The new Herbin is more supple and hasn’t had a postal mishap yet. Please consider expanding Goulet offerings in stamps and waxes, maybe mica powder-it’s just so much fun to use them, and makes the recipients feel special.

When Drew said he wasn't good at anything, I could so relate! I'm never really excellent at anything I do, I'd rather do five cool things in a mediocre manner than do only one perfectly. The trick is to decide that anything worth doing is worth doing badly.

I think Drew picked out some of my random ink samples for one of my sample orders since I had 2-4 brown ink samples. There needs to be an ink created called “Brian Drew” that is blue with brown sheen and/or shimmer.

I especially appreciate your approach to product photography. No one comes close to the variety of quality photos found on your site. I find your photography to be far superior to actual manufacturer's offerings. No other seller comes close to the product information you provide. Thank you! Tips on how to hold the pen, how much should you wipe the nib on the edge of the ink bottle so you don't get a big blob in your first written word, etc. Someone at Goulet much be a glass dip pen expert who could help us newbies TIA !!! Regarding "safe for work" ink colors that aren't either blue or black. I have been interested in "stealth colors," inks that can be used to sneak a bit of color into places where blue or black are the cultural norm. I want to give a shout-out to Colorverse Pillars of Creation. It is an extremely dark purple ink that might at first glance be mistaken for black ink until one begins to read anything written with it. It is exactly the sort of ink color that I was looking for. An ink that has the same stealth quality but for greenish blue or teal is Colorverse eXtreme deep field. These might be classified as "ninja inks" because they sneak colors into places where they are not the norm and where brighter colors would be seen as too ornamental and frivolous. These two are also sheening inks, I believe.

I truly appreciate your team, especially all the time and effort you put into your site with your photography and product specifications. I got into fountain pens about 4 years ago and back then I wasn't too familiar with the weight of the pens and how it would feel in my hand. So when I had the opportunity to touch, hold, and see a Visconti Homo Sapien (my 1st holy grail pen) in person at a store that rhymed with SchFountain SchPen SchHospital I was pretty excited. As I asked the sales associate if I could hold and take a look at the Visconti HS, my excitement turned into disappointment and anger when she told me that the HS would be out of my price range. She still took it out to let me hold it, but after that comment there was no way I would've bought it at that store. When I finally felt the weight in my hand, I waited until I could purchase from you guys. Now when I see pens I would like to purchase I have a great reference since I now know what a 40-ish gram pen felt like. :) So THANK YOU AGAIN for having such a detailed product specification section as well as accurate photos - I TRULY TRULY APPRECIATE IT AND ALL OF YOU AT GPC!!

Lego is an amazing company. A friend of mine was able to get a part for a set that had been discontinued for a few years. She emailed them and explained that she had gotten the set from a family member and that she would be willing to pay for the part if they had it in stock. They sent it to her right away and even included a couple other parts that work with the set. They like you guys have figured out that having amazing customer service can be that thing that differentiates you from the competition and that in this social media age this can be a great way to get people talking about how amazing your company is and keep people coming back. Thanks for this amazing pencast. Although I would like to stick up for the snakes of this world. Snakes are amazing and very misunderstood. I would highly recommend checking out Wickens Wicked Reptiles or Brian Kusko here on KZbin to learn about these cool animals.

Drew, if you lost your nerd card over just 42, from some people, you didn't need those people. (Just be careful to always know where your towel is, and you'll be fine. 😁) You might try a chamois as a blotter... Leathers were used for wiping dip pens in the 1800s, so... You made me look. The question about metal pen smell is interesting! I remember you used to carry Karas Customs raw metal pens, and also the Montegrappa Copper Mule. I've wondered if the Kaweco Brass Sport would have a smell since it patinas. I use brass keys to wind my antique clocks, and that leaves a smell on my fingers I'm not sure I'd want from a pen. Noodler's doesn't bother me, but brass might. I agree with Drew in wishing that the tines of a well-tuned pen could stay forever aligned. I've sometimes loved writing with a pen for several years, only to have the nib get imperceptibly out of whack, and it's sad. Felix is looking so fine!! My sister is potty training her twin Westies, and it's definitely not an event, it's a process! Thanks for another great episode!!!

In the time honored tradition of correcting a statement made on the Goulet Pencast - Metal does not have any smell. In order for a substance to have a smell it needs to be volatile (ability to vaporize) and have a certain sensitivity to be able to be picked up by our olfactory senses, neither of which criteria are satisfied by metal. Smell one of your copper pens prior to it being handled and then smell it after. The smells are your own body oils being oxidized by the metal and creating a new odo(u)r. Best way to avoid this is to try to handle raw metals with clean hands, but even then there's no real way to completely eliminate the oils. So, short of wearing gloves, there will probably be some slight odor to using raw metal pens. Love you guys! This is the highlight of my Fridays :)

David has given me courage... I don't like Lamy Safaris or vistas. I've really tried, I promise. I want to like them because they have so many colours but I've bought a few and they're always really dry. I just can't get them to work for me. So now I stick to TWSBI and Kaweco as i've never had any issues with these. I've got many TWSBIs but not enough, I love pairing the cap colour with the ink.

Thank you both so much for this entertaining end to the week! I really like the Liliput, in fact I have it in copper in the watch pocket of my jeans at practically all times. A huge advantage of the pen is that it never dries out, even after many weeks, probably because of the absolutely gas-tight copper cap and the very precisely cut threads. In Germany/Europe, you can buy an attachable clip that is made of bronze. I have heard of users who have soldered the clip to the cap. The Supra is even more preferable to me as a writing instrument because it has the wonderful #6 nib and fits better in my hand for longer writing (and the fumble factor, of course!). But since I always use it with a converter, it would be too big as an edc. There was a wonderful event for me this week: The first fountain pen enthusiasts meeting in our region after more than two years! It is to become a regulars' table again, I hope for the best. A small turkey hammock remark about our meeting: 2 out of 4 of the participants are (very satisfied) customers of GPC, although we are 6500 km away.

Thanks for yet another great launch to the weekend - always learn something and always enjoy the pencast. Quick question - we are always asked to post product reviews when we purchase something - do these comments influence your product selection? If people post about problems would you stop carrying it or investigate the issues? Most of what I see is positive but sometimes people don't seem happy with something so just wanted to see how you deal with the comments. An example, my wife purchased a Visconti Rembrandt off my wish list for my birthday last month (Goulet is the only one who carries the Dark Forest BTW) - some other reviewers mentioned the slight skip on the upstroke - I get it too depending on the paper - is it something you would bring to the attention of Visconti or look into?

On the subject of surfactant, premature infants are deficient in pulmonary surfactant (naturally produced by cells in the alveoli) and develop increased surface tension in the alveoli that results in infant respiratory distress syndrome. I recall writing that down in 1976, in my first year in medical school, using my first fountain pen, a Pelikan 120.

Chemistry teacher explanation of surfactants: the waxy coating of plants are hydrophobic because they are nonpolar. Surfactants have polar hydrophilic heads and nonpolar hydrophobic tails so, instead of water hydrogen bonding and sticking together, because it's polar, the surfactants work as a bridge between water and the wax/ oil/dirt/ nonpolar particles. This is why we use soap to lift gross things away from our clothes. Also, I have a ballpoint toolpen from before my Goulet days. I keep it in my wallet so that I can fix glasses or other random things whenever I need. Having a tiny screwdriver always is so useful. Also, watching the bubble level is soothing. Opposite of nib chameleon: nib panda. Pandas can only eat a specific bamboo species. Thanks for the pencast. We listen to it every Friday.

🖋💥INK EXPLOSION WARNING! Don’t try to use the Kaweco sport converter in the Liliput unless you want to find 2/3rds of the contents exploding out of the nib! It’s definitely a cartridge-only pen. 😂 (It compresses the plunger down level with the beginning of the w on the converter.) I was worried about the potential smell of the brass Liliput and Supra before I got them. If I put them right up to my nose I can smell it but it doesn’t transfer to my hand and is definitely not a strong smell. I’m tempted to add a copper one to my collection but I have a feeling that would be stronger. Also, there is a clip available in some parts of the world. I have one and I’m in the UK so it’s interesting to hear that’s not an option in the US.

I rejected the idea of buying a Kaweco Liliput for a long time, mainly because of the price, but also because it is too thin for my hands. I never even asked to hold them when I visited pen stores. Yesterday I saw a green one with a 50% discount which left the price in approximately 40 dollars. I asked to check it and I found that , since I grip pens rather high, the pen didn’t feel so thin. I bought it. I’m. planning on inking it today and hope I’ll be as satisfied as you.

Brian, Drew is right on re: Oxford blue! It is a beautiful dark blue and has been my go to for my Pilot 823 since I purchased it. It is not permanent but stands out on a page. I think you would like it. Prior to that I was using Diamine 1864 Blue Black. For signing official documents I use Platinum Carbon black. I’ve always loved saturated ink and am tempted to try The Sailor ink Drew liked, Kiwaguro. I thought it was interesting that some of the most detailed ink reviews I’ve read were regarding these two inks. If you want some really good info regarding both inks From calligraphers and artists, read the Goulet reviews as well as on a competitor’s site Jet Pens. Love your Pen Cast and I always enjoy your recommendations. I think a blue shoot out would be a fun contest to have by having your viewers pick their favorites in single elimination brackets. So many blues to choose from. Based on color or other characteristics as well. Some of them are so similar, However each one has a specific characteristic that makes it stand out, or not. I love my glass pen for small things like signing cards, but I fell out of love with the idea of using it for ink samples. I get a lot of variation out of it, so the samples that I made weren't really representative of how the ink would look in most other pens. I use a TWSBI Eco with a stub nib for doing ink samples. Just dip it in the ink and that gives me plenty for a writing sample.

I'm not allergic to nickel, but nickel is allergic to me. Nickel is often used as a plating agent, and if I touch something with nickel, it gets all pitted. I used to do cross stitch, and I could use a regular nickel-plated needle once, then it was too pitted to use. I eventually started to use platinum-plated needles, but even they use some nickel as a plating agent, and the plating would quickly start detriorating.

I hope Brian had a good time in Detroit, junk food and all. The Red Wings used to play in an arena on the riverfront and I remember my cousin bringing his son and some friends down from the suburbs for a game, and he had told them so many tall tales over the years that they didn't believe him when he told them that was Canada across the river. We have great fireworks on the river during our International Freedom Festival in late June/early July. And Drew--those mugs are cool. I'm glad your wife got you the skull.

There's a YT channel called Letterlocking Videos with historic ways that people folded and sealed letters to ensure privacy before envelopes. REALLY COOL! As for other wax seal alternatives, you can make seals with hot glue with coloured hot glue sticks OR paint regular hot glue with nail polish or paint pens. Those will go through the mail. Another option is wax seal stickers or washi tape--it would be great to see a GPC pen splat wax seal sticker sheet. Also, old school construction paper is a great alternative to blotter paper. 🙂

Yes! Detroit love!! I hope Brian had Buddy's pizza. Jets is acceptable, but Buddy's is the best and is the OG. Also, I've lived in Metro Detroit 98% of my life and I didn't know the loose hamburger was a Detroit thing... I hoped he liked our amazing city! Detroit still gets a lot of hate, but it really had an amazing resurgence after 2008.

Metal actually has no odor, It's not actually the metal that smells. The smell associated with some metals like copper and brass is from the chemical reaction between the oil on your hands and the metal. Nileblue has a great video on it. Also, really hope they come out with a copper supra someday.

I have a ink sample set suggestion based on Brian’s best inks. You should do rotating seasonal sample sets. They could be “Drew Brown’s Fall Vibes”, “Rachel Goulet Spring feels”, ect. And as you interview more of your crew on the podcast (like you did with Brian K a few weeks ago) you could include them in the rotation. I think your Turkey Hammock fans might be into this 🤓

This is not specific to this episode, but like Mr. Brown, the first thing I write when I ink a pen is the name of the ink (plus the brand, collection, and english translation of the name, if applicable) and the pen and nib size I'm writing with. It's a good first thing to write to avoid a paralysis of blank page anxiety, and also serves as a good record for what ink resides in which pen, seeing as I am rather like Mr. Goulet in the "how many pens do I have ink in" department. I recently got into the Sailor Ink Studio line, after watching many episodes where "Rainfluff" and "Thunderfluff" were recommended. Unfortunately, there are only so many times you can write "Sailor Ink Studio No. " before it starts to feel a bit repetitive. So, I decided to follow Mr. Brown's tradition and named the Ink Studios (and some other Sailor inks) that I had tried: Snowfluff (Ink Studio 143), Skyfluff (Manyo Nadeshiko), Cloudfluff (Ink Studio 243), Mistfluff (Manyo Haha), Windfluff (Manyo Nekoyanagi), and Stormfluff (Manyo Kikyou). Thank you for the idea and for the many hours of advice (both pen specific and otherwise), entertainment, and good humor this pencast provides. Wishing you many biscuits, turkey hammocks, waffle house gift cards, and brown pens, as well as absences of yellow jackets, poison ivy, uncured Urushi pens, badly posted caps, and Dots. I hope you feel the appreciation of your audience like a tidal wave of bowling balls.

Earlier this week I was soaking a Kaweco Sport nib/feed after its maiden voyage, during which I used a black ink cartridge. Or at least I thought it was black! When the ink started releasing into the jar of water it became this very deep purple, even though it looked perfectly black on the page. A science-loving friend of mine recommended having some fun with chromatography with some of my inks, and recommended this video as a starting point: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqWkdoGGiLmbf5Y. There's not really a question here, just a potential idea for a future video because I really loved the one Drew did this week featuring a battle of the waterproof inks. Perhaps we're entering the Mr. Wizard phase of GPC videos? ;)

The surfactant is called propylene glycol, probably food grade. Less toxic than ethylene glycol (which is the main ingredient in antifreeze, but is very toxic. Polypropylene glycol is less toxic). Word of advice: don't look too closely at the ingredient lists on drinks or those water flavor additives!

I have a question that I cannot seem to find an answer to that perhaps you can address sometime. My first fountain pen was a Lamy Safari. Great pen. Easy to wash off all the spilled ink. It is a plastic cased pen though, so I have no problem just dumping it in water to clean. My second pen is a Copper Liliput pen. I love both the pens, but I have some concerns about cleaning the copper Liliput pen. Are there differences in cleaning/maintaining a metal body pen versus plastic body pens? Particularly concerned about flushing out the previous ink when I want to change the ink colour?

I like pens that never dry out. That is one of my biggest annoyances about fountain pens. Some of mine practically never do for months or YEARS. They have an effective inner liner in the cap preventing that from happening. I have beautiful pens that I quit using just because of that. I Initially purchased pens that I really loved because of the way they looked, form over function. I wasn’t aware of details to look for. This is a characteristic not often, if ever mentioned on websites.

1. Basic desk sets used to include de riguer a rocker blotter in addition to the desk pad and weighted fountain pen holder. The blotter cards used to be handed out complimentary, with Rx pads by detail men. That does date me. Recently, I had a hard time looking for a new rocker blotter that wasn't too small nor pricey. The one I finally settled for was made in India, but of course, as fountain pen writing culture is alive and well there. 2. There is a bronze nostalgia clip for the Kaweco Liliput and it is widely available in the USA. 3.Chuck E. Cheese is international, e.g. HK

fun fact regarding signet rings; it was common practice to first remove the ring and then use it as a standard seal in order to avoid burning the backs of your fingers with molten sealing wax.

Liliput is awesome for quick short notes, but the way that I hold my pen leads it to slide slowly from my preferred finger position. In that sense, it's just a tiny bit too slim for my liking. If it were the same diameter as Al Sport, it would be perfect. And yes, there are clips for the Liliput.

Have you ever seen Drew and Arthur Dent together? Could it be that Drew is Arthur Dent? Drew, the best way to experience The Hitchhikers Guide to Galaxy is listen to the audio version that BBC put out for the radio in either the very late 70s or very early 80s. The movie doesn't hold a candle to this version and bonus, you can listen to it on your commute. Drew is the perfect Arthur Dent...can't you see him arguing with the bulldozer crew about to flatten his house... :)

I was a bit concerned about the metal smell from the brass Lilliput before I got it. Happy to report that the smell is mild and doesn’t last past the next hand wash. I assume it has something to do with how little of my hand actually touches the metal.
