I was 10 years old when this happened in Kilgore ....My mom and I drove through the drive thru and no one answered ...then we went to the window and a male starting waving at us to go while saying we are closed. There was someone behind him at the time. My mom, a African American woman, thought they were being discriminatory. So she drove to the front of the store and right when she was getting out the car, I begged her not to go in. I was 10 years old and I remember it like it was yesterday. I had a deep intuition that came over me and my mother got back in the car and we drove away. We were interviewed by Kilgore Police as one of the cars that stopped before the murders. Im so sorry this happened to so people. Just a horrible incident.

Some guys tried to kidnap my old Boss, while she was working the graveyard shift at the gas station I worked at; SHE told these guys that they had to kill her right there, because she wasn’t going ANYWHERE with them. They got spooked & left! She got lucky

Thank you Lamont for telling this horrific story, touched me deeply , they all were so young , my God , 5 lives gone in one night , a girl raped , all taken to another location to be executed , must have seem like a lifetime getting to that location , the barn where they were lined up and killed. My heart just breaks for these young people , life meant nothing to the 2 (3) killers , but tragically destroyed 5 families -maybe their sister daughter a son a mother killed. These murders have left me with a heavy heart and speechless just tears , that’s all I have for these young people , tears. Thank you Lamont for the re-telling of this story which I did not know about , my sympathies to all the families involved , you give each victim such respect and you touched me when you said “ can’t seem to find any family around Mary Tyler’s grave , she’s here all alone , that got to me , you are a true gentleman in every sense of the word, your kindness, empathy , and compassion hit me hard, again thank you Lamont for all that you give to each case. Lamont, again you have touched my soul. Sad ending for the five victims. Back in 1974 thru 1977. I also worked at a KFC. THREE BLACK MALES ROBBED THE STORE. MADE US GET ON THE FLOOR. MANAGER WAS HIT OVER THE HEAD AS HE OPEN UP THE SAFE. ANOTHER COOK WAS INSTRUCTED TO PULL THE PHONE WIRE FROM THE WALL. WE WERE LUCKY THEY LEFT WITH THE MONEY ONLY. THIS WAS IN CUYAHOGA FALLS OHIO. Look up the murders cases of Paul Dennis Reed he had Nashville and the surrounding area scared of him for a few months. My then roommate met him before it was discovered he was the killer. He use to live in my roommates parents neighborhood. He said he was a nice person to talk to. Who knew he was a serial killer. Killing restaurant employees for their nights take.

Yeah, that is a life lesson for us all no matter when or where it happens. If they are planning on taking you somewhere, that is a red flag that they going to end your life. Your just making it easier for them to hide you cause you let them take you to a secluded area.

I was also taught in self-defense class that if they want you to get in a vehicle, don't do it; just run in any direction. Also, in retail training, we were told that if we were robbed, to give them all the money, no questions asked. Money can be replaced; people can't. I also once saw a bomb threat protocol where two of the questions you're supposed to ask are "What is your name?" and "What is your address?" Research has shown that people are usually agitated enough, they will share that information.

That's not totally always true about DNA, Autumn. Because a lot of people go to KFC and some of those other places where they found this DNA. And some of them leave their DNA there by accident or unknowingly. And they don't clean every single thing in many of those restaurants also. And I must say that sometimes some people confess to crimes that they commit in the past also. And sometimes the police or law enforcement make some mistakes when it comes to gathering evidence, DNA, etc. in some other cases in the past also. And sometimes some bad cops or bad police, etc. falsely plant some evidence at some crime scenes in the past also. And some police or law enforcement arrest the wrong person because sometimes their DNA is the same as the DNA found at some crime scenes and it turns out that the person who actually committed that crime was their twin brother or sister in the past. And some people frame some other people sometimes at some crime scenes in the past also. And that's just some examples as to why DNA does sometimes lie at some crime scenes.

Thank you for a great job sharing the memories of these victims. I was 8 years old when this occurred, I had been living in Henderson for just over a year. I still currently live in Henderson and travel through Kilgore daily to go to work in Longview. I didn't really know what was going on, only heard about people dying at KFC in Kilgore. Over the years I had forgotten about it, until They discovered the murderers. I knew Romeo Pinkerton and his family. I met them when I managed a small loan company in Henderson. The Pinkertons were actually some of my best customers. It was a shock to learn about his involvement. I knew there were some drug issues he had dealt with, but murder, I just couldn't fathom. I pray that the third party comes to light and he does his time, or has already met his maker.

I've wondered over the years what happened to the Kilgore murders. I lived in Henderson, TX The Maxwell guy was my neighbors brother. It was sad and horrifying. There weren't wild and crazy crimes like this one then. I can still hear his sister telling me about the killing of precious souls. May they rest in peace.

I know Jimmy Mankins Jr. Picked me and my dog up about three yrs prior to this. Told him I was trying to go another 500 miles for a job in the oil field. Gave me a job got me a place etc. Good guy solid in my opinion. Years later I got a new guy on the tile crew and he was from Tyler Tx. To make it shorter he told me this story. I said NO WAY NOT JIMMY MANKINS NO WAY.!!! I'm so happy to find out that he was innocent and that my intuition was spot on. Shoot almost forgot in-between those two events I was going through and the van broke down. He was in a hurry, oil field was sunk and his trucking co. was moving equipment out of state for work. but gave me some cash and pointed us to a friend who gave us a new transmission from a car in his yard. People in East Texas are good people that even help strangers sometimes, especially if Jimmy Mankins ask. So I know it's a long comment, but felt compelled to share what I know of Jimmy. It is all good he has a good heart definitely a solid man. Thanks for helping me every time I was in need or asked. Lastly hope this quashes the shade the you tube dude slung on my friend. Because he is much more than a side note.

Lamont, I grew up in North East Texas about an hour from Kilgore and I have never heard of this. I’m only 27, but my mother would usually tell me about the stories. When you said "I feel sad, I feel like she's out here by herself", that's how I felt when I went to put Christmas decorations on family graves and there was a headstone I had never seen before of a little boy who died 2 weeks shy of his 4th birthday from just a few years ago. Don't know the circumstances and doesn't appear that anyone has visited the grave (no decorations) so I put a stick decoration of a Christmas gingerbread man down into the ground for him this past year.

I've heard of the HiFi murders. I watched a TV movie about it. But when I read the actual details of the crime, it was beyond gruesome in my opinion. Just like the Wichita nightmare. I think Law & Order: SVU did an episode based on that case.

Oh yeah, that happened in Ogden. Super brutal, all I can recall from there was that the murderers were ex-Air Force that raped one of the workers and stomped a pen into the ear of another. Obviously, there is more information online, but that is what I can recall from the incident.

The oil lease was my great grandfather’s and he was supposed to go out to check the wells that night. For some reason he just didn’t feel like going and was just going to check the next day. If he would have gone he would have been there during the murders.

I remember this well. I lived in Gladewater and was in jr high school. It was the first time that my little "safe" world was rocked. The realization that horrific crimes did not just happen in big cities, but could be that close was just shocking. Thank you, Lamont, for bringing the stories behind the memorial markers. Side note* At Friendship Cemetery, there is a marker just above Montgomery's is my parents marker where my mom is laid to rest. I did not realize that he was laid to rest at Friendship. I was driving through Tucson, AZ in January of 1999. The radio said three workers at a Pizza Hut had been murdered the night before. I just found out today that the two men that committed the crime have been in prison for 20 years but one of them is to be released in a few years. He has no right to be set free. I will say I had this mixed up with another fast food restaurant killing I remember. I thought it was also a KFC but may be wrong, but I remember there was also a robbery (if memory serves, I think it ended up being a former employee who was one of the people who did it) and several workers were murdered and an opening employee in the morning found the bodies. Sickening, from someone who spent many years as an assistant manager in a restaurant which was also open very late and we were also robbed by scumbags walking into an unlocked back door. This was back in around 1990, in Amherst New York, and ironically, we were also a chicken restaurant. We specialized in chicken and ribs, the rotisserie type of chicken you see at Sam's Club and Costco, only before Sam's Club and Costco, and it was very popular and VERY busy. I actually had that night off, but I closed probably 75% of the time and by the grace of God I missed the terror five of my co workers endured, as the other assistant manager worked that Saturday night. Two thugs entered with sawed off shotguns and made them all lie down on the floor and "wait" for the manager to come back at one in the morning to "take care" of the money. The assistant manager on duty lied about the manager coming back because for some STUPID reason he decided to play hero with the owner's money and he told them he didn't have the combination to the safe, which of course, he did, and they endured probably forty minutes of terror not knowing if they were going to live or die, and they finally were locked inside a cooler and the thugs got away without harming them and with MUCH less money than they could have. STUPID and reckless decision by the assistant manager to put innocent lives in danger for the owner's INSURED money, but he wasn't known for being overly adept at making good life decisions. Thankfully, they two scumbags, who were robbing restaurants in the area for months, were caught and my other assistant manager had to go to court and identify them and testify against them. This was back when New York State used to actually try and convict and sentence violent offenders, and I believe they both got twenty years. It's NOT an easy way to make a living and yes, we were very guilty of complacency, even leaving the back door WIDE open until two in the morning some nights. We learned a hard lesson, but thankfully, no one was harmed.

Man I remember this murder story back i the 80s! That was probably one of the worst masacre in the 80s! I just can never fathom the horror those victims felt as they where led to their demise! I just hope that God have their souls resting at peace. 🙏😢as for those who committed that horrendous crime! They should have gotten the death penalty no iffs and no buts about it! This story has always haunted me whenever it comes to mind. My friend lived in Longview at the time and she told me how scary it was, no one felt safe. We moved to Longview a few years later and driving through Kilgore I would always look at the old KFC building. Another friend was actually planning on going there that night even though it was close to closing, she was craving pulleybones. Her friends’ Dad convinced them to stay in and he fixed them some chicken instead. She knew they surely escaped death. So scary and so sad. I worked in fast food when I was younger. I can't recall any really scary customers, but I definitely worked with some scary people, and they didn't LOOK scary on the surface which made them even more dangerous.

The story of this crime is strangely, or should I say eerily similar to the "Burger Chef Murders". First, access to the store was gained when someone took out the trash. Second, everyone in the store was kidnapped. Third, they were taken approximately 20 miles from the scene of the crime. Fourth, they were shot. Did anyone ever try to connect the two?

I remember very vividly when this happened. I grew up in a little town just 10 miles north of Kilgore. I had grandparents and an aunt who lived there.From the very beginning Jimmy Mankins Jr was their prime suspect. The rumor was that one of the male employees had a new recipe for methamphetamine and Jimmy Mankins wanted it. Every Saturday we would visit my grandparents and I would ride with her and my mother to go buy dinner from that KFC. It was a real tragedy

I remember this story being featured on Unsolved Mysteries back in the day. Senseless & disturbing case. Really could've been anyone as I myself worked at a KFC while in high school in South Carolina. My store got robbed one night when I was off. Though the employees that worked that night were tied up, fortunately the robbers only took the money in the registers & some bags of frozen chicken. The employees escaped with their lives though I'm sure it's still a very traumatic experience you never forget. RIP to the victims in this case 🙏🏾

The death penalty should have been done a long time ago. They get to live their lives while their victims lie in the ground their lives cut short. If the wife had gone down there 2 more lives would have been taken since the wife was pregent. A wife lost her husband and a child never got to meet their dad. Yeah, I think of fast food like convenience stores. They just seem to easy to rob because of the seclusion of these kinds of jobs, especially at night where there are hardly any people around. Just a couple people left that are closing. It's not like a retail or grocery store where there are lots of people around. Even after closing, there are still lots of employees in bigger settings. But the seclusion of these places is what makes them so scary and easily targeted.
