You don't just find your style, your style will find YOU. I drew for a long long time thinking "I wonder when I'm going to find my style..." when one day my fiancée told me that something I had drawn felt very fitting to my style. I asked her what she had meant and if she was saying I had some kind of style, and she said as if it were completely obvious that I clearly had one. Starting to look back, I could see bits and pieces in retrospect that really were like little fingerprints of things I had done that she mentioned. Sometimes you really need another set of eyes, because you're probably not going to notice you've developed one until someone points it out to you.

You can looks at any veteran manga artist to see how their styles constantly change and shift over time to suit their aesthetic, preferences and sometimes even just their age. Older manga artists tend to get more conservative with intricate linework, whereas in their youth, they might have gone absolutely nuts over it - and that shows a skill in choosing what to emphasize that only develops with time. When Hirohiko Araki was asked why he doesn't draw his old characters in the style that manga was at the time, he just said simply - "I forgot how to draw like that". That's just it, because it's also a fascination and inspiration with certain kind of works also popular at the time. Trying to see style influences (and influences in general) is something that I really enjoy about art, because it also helps me understand how these great artists and writers think, what they feel free to experiment with, what they feel okay to include in their works and it can just feel very playful and fun. So in essence, just draw what you like and get tired with trying to perfectly replicate it/get pressured for time/get a little bit lazy over time/ just have fun! That's where your style will be!

And you *can* force yourself to write another way! When I need to write something down quickly I don't care if my letters don't quite read or I misspell, but sometimes I write a note, and my writing gets more deliberate and readable. I can also practice making my handwriting more fancy or straight if I practice. But all of those alternate styles are also unique to me.

I just don’t get the obsession with “having a style”, just draw and steal what you think looks good. When you have stolen from a lot of artists, you’ll have a “style”.
@Mintiest_Alex8 ай бұрын
I guess the obsession is to find what they like. When you copy others, (even though you like it) that tends to be the only thing you do. You never grow off of that, because it’s what your mind was trained to do. (From experience) People don’t just wanna copy all day, they want to have a fully functioning style, that THEY enjoy and love. So I think this is where the “I have to find my artstyle!” Comes from, because everyone around them has there’s figured out, and they’re standing there like “but what about me? I’ve tried for years and still cannot find it!” My thing is, just draw. Finding a style isn’t what’s important. I mean, it can be, but it shouldn’t be the main focus where it drives you away from your art. Try to see what things YOU want to do, and not look at others. Chances are, they aren’t gonna have what you want.

@Freeasacloud8 ай бұрын
I think obsession with artstyle is more of the want/need to express/show things the same way as the artist that you admire. It's kind of a cute love letter if you ask me. You look at an artist and you love the way their art looks/makes you feel, to the point you want to do it as well. Then people obsess with artstyle because they want to evoke the same emotion like the artworks that inspired them example: "This artwork is so cool, I want to do that too!" >>>> The quest for artstyle begins. You could also be proud of your work but unfortunately some will see it and be like "this looks like x-senpai artwork" or "You used a reference didnt you?" which leads to insecurity or deminished accomplishment because your time and effort has been looked down on because you clearly took inspiration from someone else ---> Leads you to think you need your own original style to be recognised. Otherwise it could be for marketing or commission aspects and some types of artstyle get more attention than others, or simply some wants to be popular. There are many reasons to obsess with artstyle either for self expressions through characters/stories, marketing or popularity gains. But honestly if someone wants to copy or learn another artist style, it is one of the highest compliments imo, because they love it so much that they want to make it as well.

Good luck man, drawing can be frustrating and can take a TON of time to learn, but with the right attitude, discipline and motivation, you'll get there in no time, keep studying smart, don't overwork yourself and make sure to rest between the studying! Keep yerself hydrated as well Drawing is supposed to be fun, not a task that you HAVE to do and NEVER, never compare yourself to other artists that have drawn for years in a way like "They're so much better" na, see what you like, implicate it into your drawings and do it until it becomes muscle memory, keep trying and never give up, no pressure here man, other people on the internet would most likely be more than happy to guide ya.

I think im still on that boat in which i feel like i studied art to the point where i wanted to at least try and find my own style. I heard this a long time ago and I still consider it true. Calling it an art style is a bit inaccurate. Think of it as your voice. It's just naturally the way your art comes out because of your unique intersection of taste, knowledge, and life experience. Thinking of it that way takes the pressure off of trying to find it and can help you focus more on just learning how you like to do things.

I over render because I like to render, but I'm aiming for a graphic style. And I struggle hard to simplify things or go away from reality. I just can't make my hand skew the proportions! So far the only way I can loosen up is if I say 'I can't sleep until I do this' and then wait until I'm DESPERATE to sleep. Then start drawing. It is the only thing that makes me rush enough to simplify

@4:39 This reminded me of an explanation an English teacher I had in school gave when talking about grammar and why there are so many examples of these giants among writers breaking the rules of grammar. "They know the rules and are breaking them to get exactly where they want to go." The thing about rules in creative fields isn't knowing them and staying staunchly beholden to them at all times, but instead to allow you know know the basic forms and shapes that they can take on, and then break the rules to bend the language to assist in putting your ideas into another persons head. If you break rules without knowing them, it won't help you do that. It just comes out a mess of broken thoughts, few of which even indicate toward the idea you wanted to get across. But if you know the rules, you can break intentionally them in order to better communicate ideas. Intentionality is the important thing.

the fixation with "art style consistency" was a huge thing that plagued my earlier work, eventually i got over myself and just let myself draw whatever i wanted. funnily enough, this actually led to my work becoming way more visually consistent since i've worked out how i do linework and coloring in the way that's the most fun for me personally. i think anyone trying to develop a style should focus on what they like (neat vs messy lineart, simple vs detailed coloring, soft vs angular shapes, etc.) and not try to force themselves into artstyles they don't have fun drawing. well-put video! you've earned a subscribe from me :)

tbf artstyle is just an accumulation of anatomy errors that we make, like and keep in our art. i used to be so obsessed with finding my own and i remember crafting frankenstains of things i liked from other artists but it always was tedious and annoying to keep it up. i gave up on it and just kept drawing. with time my skill improved, i practiced more anatomy and proportions. When my skill got to the point of being able to draw lines and proportions freely and confidently (if that makes sense) i started noticing tendences for specific ways of drawing this or that and if i liked them i kept them, if i didnt i corrected them. Plus arstyle is something that will smoothly and slowly change trough time. obsessing over it is probably the last thing that will help finding it

Of course, knowing how to draw realism accurately not only helps you draw in your style, but it also ensures you can draw in an entirely DIFFERENT style if you ever decide you want to! I studied anatomy for dogs, I studied anatomy for humans (and am still in the process of studying humans more in-depth), but I didn't study anatomy for cats, and it shows. I did a tiny bit, but it wasn't enough. Most people think my cats look GOOD, don't get me wrong, but it's SO difficult for me to draw cats realistically or in a different style! I'm going to have to go back and study cat anatomy to fix this and improve my current cat style. Don't forget, you don't have to master ALL of anatomy before you can draw anything else! Take it in little chunks at a time, and you can stop whenever you feel satisfied. Eventually, you may not be satisfied anymore, and you can reinforce your anatomy knowledge! Don't suck the fun out of drawing --- enhance it!

One thing I have been learning and reminding myself about art is that there are no rules. For a while I thought that, by exactly imitating other artists’ styles and processes in my own pieces, I would eventually learn some secret art rules that I could then follow to make art exactly how I wanted it. I became so fixated on perfecting every detail and exactly following the processes I saw other artists do that I barely finished/did any art. I kept trying to overhaul my work mid-process because the pieces weren’t fitting together “properly.” It was only when I faced a deadline that I let go of all those rules I made up and just made sh*t. And that’s when some of it started looking good, and art became fun again.

The thing about always having a style is very true. When I was little I would draw very thin figures. That went for every animal, not just humans. They looked like someone had deflated them. Now that I have more practice and knowledge under my belt, I have been able to use that to my advantage to make snakes and dragons and any sort of sharp-looking creature. While that doesn't mean my style is only that forever, it gives my art a very unique flare and some fun shape. I would also like to say that style is influenced by the tools you use. I've always been in love with bold line work, but I tend to ease up on it a lot more with my paper drawings and focus more on shadow. I also don't usually do any color on paper, mostly because I don't want to spend that much on pencils or markers, but also because I find pencil and a bit of pen to just be how I enjoy traditional art.
@nagasimp18558 ай бұрын
i did that, and my favorite style was an inbetween of anime style and realist draws, i think it looks really cool because i can decide whether i will add three million parts of detail or just a suggestion of the shape, then there is my inking crosshatch which is "messy" and "rococoo" if you want to say it with pretty words XD

This may or may not be helpful for others, but I’ve found I enjoy my art a lot more the less I focus on “my style.” Like Pikat said, a style is just kind of something that forms naturally, and constantly evolves and develops. In the past, the harder I tried to focus on maintaining or curating a style, the less “me” my art felt. Eventually I slowly let go and just let my art be what it is, and that’s helped me a lot Another tip I’d have is almost the opposite: but do studies! Heck, even recreate stuff you like! Don’t trace or steal or yanno act like it’s your own thing that came out of your brainmind obviously. But! Sometimes I’ll make something that I intentionally won’t post or show to others because that project is purely studying everything about this piece I’m taking from. Using the color picker to just look at the colors, looking at how they use their lines or lack thereof, shading, perspective, cinematography, composition, everything! Last thing I’ll mention is sometimes I’ll like to experiment! Go completely out of my comfort zone and break every rule I’ve “established” for myself. I like doing a lot of hatch shading and forming shapes through linework. Okay, now I’m going to use zero linework, use a brush I’ve never used before, ect. 9 times out of 10, it turns out crap. But the intention is A. I learned something and B. Even if I didn’t, I still made my hands do something they weren’t used to

"Art style" is my a-word. For some of the newer people here: My style is really messy; if you've ever seen items like Blame or Girl's Last Tour, and how they are visual cacophonies, mine is very similar. It's okay to have a messy style. And your style will be an amalgamation of the things you do like. If you look at really nicely lined pieces, really colorful pieces, or really messy pieces (like me with megastructures and scale)? Those will all inform how you draw. I have a more existentialist tilt to my drawing, thus scale playing a large part in my art. I also really hate drawing characters, and that's okay. So many art classes and videos ask for you to understand gesture and people-centric views. My style was never people-centric and doing that made me drop drawing for SIX years. My style leans further towards perspective, and less towards people and gesture. And yeah, my style could be construed as a "skill issue", but style is equal parts born of "skill issue" and preference. Just my two cents.

When I turn my brain off and just draw I find I make characters really dynamic and expressive. I tend to make their eyes and mouths absolutely massive but with just small black pupils like a mix between anime and cartoon. But if I just do that all the time my characters end up all looking the same so I like to mix things up with different styles of facial features. Which makes it easy to differentiate them by their face which I think is cool. Sometimes I see a way an artist does something so I just put that In one of my characters instead of making it my whole deal

My design lecturer said the same, everyone's lines would be different. You will NEVER be the EXACT same as anyone you copy. That's how they know if students did plagiarism or tracing or trying to copy one another

I find it funny that the little chibi arts through out the video don't actually have a nose drawn at all 😆

I usually don't watch those "find your style" videos, cause the answer is just "draw, duh" (which is accurate), or they invent some bullshit, but I like watching your content ^^

For years I tried to force myself to draw realistic and I was always unhappy with how it ended up, I realized after a while that it’s just not my style, my style is way more cartooney/anime like and forcing myself to draw realistically will never look good or be fun to me 😅

I really liked one piece and code geass characters.. One piece characters how the shapes are exaggerated and simplified.. Code geass with the gorgeous long proportions plust the vibe and facial features.. also the way clothes are drawn there are mostly composed with edges and triangles making it so aggressive to look at.

My art style is literally because I was drawing on $20 drawing tablet, that's why my line is very thick to hide my wobbly lines and somehow it's my art style simply because I don't have a choice

I drew girls for majority of my art journey but I didn’t study them really. And then I started studying how to draw guys, and now I have a way better understanding on how to draw guys to the point where my girl drawings just aren’t up to par with my male anatomy/facial knowledge.
