I’ve actually never seen anyone color correct quite like this before. Your end result is flawless! Yet you don’t follow standard color correction steps which is really interesting I think. Typically everyone I know (including myself) drops the blacks until they’re just above 0 and get the whites just below 100. You had your white well below 100 ire but the image is so beautiful. I guess that just goes to show you don’t always have to do things by the book.

Thanks a lot for creating and sharing! Planning to use SLOG2 just as per your input but I am a little concerned about my ISO. If I must overexpose by 1.7-2.0 stops, will I have to keep my ISO at a fixed value and always readjust according to the next scene? Given my type of vlogging, that is a lot of readjustment, as I am planning to vlog morning to evening in so many evvironments.Pretty much moving between indoors, outdoors, sports, cars, harsh conditions, shops, etc. I guess a VND Filter is a must for me. What about my zebras for slog2? When in frame, expose for face? I would appreciate your feedback as I truly trust your judgment.

In your video at 2:01 you mentioned you could have made another video about this. Thanks again for all the knowledge you've provided.
@TimmyLodhi Жыл бұрын
It's always a fine balance. If you don't have enough light, I highly suggest cranking the ISO to compensate. But there's a limit to how high you can go before you end up with a noisy image. So try to judge each location as best as you can.

I am an hlg3 user that refrained from slog2 since people say it's hard to expose. How do you do it? Ettr or maybe fixed overexposure? Once again thanks for your film and the grading tips.
@TimmyLodhi4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think overexposing can be tricky with Sony cameras but I always use zebras! I set them to 100+ and know that everything with striped lines will be blown out. I'll also use the exposure meter at the bottom and aim for +1.7 or +2.0. Just remember that Sony Cameras don't read above +2.0 so if you see that number blinking you may be too overexposed.

@BrewReview2 жыл бұрын
Blindly setting your zebras to 100+ isn’t a magic fix, you first need to know what the correct exposure actually IS with your particular gamma curve. Sony does have a white paper on the values on their website to reference, but it will also depend on what light you have to work with when you shoot - every shoot.
@426Studios2 жыл бұрын
@@BrewReview If I remember correctly, the white paper mentions having to expose your middle Grey to around 30 or 35% for Slog2 for you to have the highest dynamic range possible for Slog2... The problem with that is that is it is underexposed and when you adjust it in post, it is very noisy. Yes, it does net you the highest dynamic range possible for Slog2 but with a noisy image so that's why people are overexposing instead to have a cleaner image because it will still give you a big dynamic range. I do agree that setting the zebra to 100+ is not a magic fix. Having a monitor with a false color function, and of course lighting properly is still the way to go. If you still didnt get an external monitor, you should also properly expose your image because thats still the most important part of the image, so you need to have another zebra pattern prepared and set it to 60 to 75% depending on what type of skin the subject has. Gerald Undone made a great video about Slog2, which is to expose your subject 1 stop higher and to make sure your highlights are not overexposed (if you need the information of your highlights), that's why you need to have 2 zebra patterns prepared, 1 for the subject which is set to 60 to 75%, and 103 for the highlights.

This all is incredible information! Has to be the most informative video I've found on KZbin. Only issue I would be worried about is encountering grain when upping the ISO. What would I do in that situation?
@TimmyLodhi3 жыл бұрын
That's the interesting thing. Sometimes upping your ISO actually decreases the amount of noise you get in your shadows. That's why people talk about overexposing SLOG-2 by 2 stops. It's all about balance. Try increasing your ISO and overexposing without clipping your highlights and compare it to an underexposed image. You'll probably notice the first one looks better. For the most part, Sony cameras have great noise performance. You can get close to 6400/8000 ISO before it really starts looking bad.

Hi Timmy, tks for your channel, I loved the tips! So I use a Sony A7SII and it always get messy skin tone colors, the image somehow get a little stained on yellow tones I don't know why... And with different Sony cameras always using s-log.. Have you noticed something similar?
@TimmyLodhi3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! So earlier Sony models like the A7sii and even A7iii are notorious for having less than perfect color science and greenish/yellow skin tones. The newer models like FX3 and A7siii have a much improved color to them. My only suggestion is to spend a little extra time when color grading to account for the Slog-2/3 image from those cameras.
@thetrillout3 жыл бұрын
Beginner here. Really helpful video. Hope you don't mind if I ask a question here. I was playing around with my sony a6500 and noticed that when using shutter priority, i wasnt able to expose over 2 stops to the right. Before taking the video I can set it +2, +3, +4 stops, but the end product all seemed to be exposed the same (+2 cap?). Manual will lock and expose as directed. A follow up would be what do you do during shots where lighting and required exposure will change?
@TimmyLodhi3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Deepu! I'd suggest using full manual controls if you can. It'll give you more flexibility. Another thing is that the Sony cameras won't display anything past +2 on the light meter itself. If you see it blinking, you've past +2 stops.
@thetrillout3 жыл бұрын
@@TimmyLodhi After some more practice shots motivated by your video, it seems that you can't even go past two stops (no blinking) in modes other than manual. Also evident by the exposure of the clips, despite setting the exposure two stops to the right prior to starting to shoot. Looks like sony will automatically stop down to +2 with whatever variable is not locked. Thanks for the reply I appreciate it.

Hey, thank you. When I'm in 4K + Slog2 settings I want to switch to 1080P + Cine4 settings instantly. But for recording normal video I need to stay in the movie mode (I think?). In my current setup I have to manually adjust every setting for the preset I like (in camera). Is there a workaround for this? I can't figure out how to select my memory recall settings in movie mode. Best
