Awesome video. That was a great analogy between advocacy and hunting and the persistence they both require. One of the reasons I am glad about being visually impaired is that it has made me much more persistent and unwilling to give up on things I want and or need then I would’ve been otherwise.

I have ASD and I always have to advocate for myself and prove to others how strong I am. 6 months ago I discovered that I am visually impaired. I can see, but my brain stops processing what I am seeing. I also have tunnel vision. I have trouble of getting a guide dog because I am not considered legally blind. For my entire, I have been visually impaired, but doctor's couldn't find out what was wrong with me until I didn't know what I was seeing. This fall I am going into my second year of college at a community college. In spring of 2022, I hope to transfer to a 4 year university to study environmental education. Thank you so much for the advice! :-)

I swear some teachers should not be teaching. Between life-long anxiety and educational trauma from teachers treating me so badly for years, this one took me awhile. I would try, and if that didn't work, I would have my mom do it at conferences. "I'm short and near-sighted, I need to sit in the front" was usually enough. Only one teacher who had been teaching forever gave me issues. She arranged us alphabetically by rows, putting me in the last seat. My mom suggested she just change the seating chart, and she told me "She looked shocked, like that had never occurred to her!" I'm sorry, in 30+ years of teaching, this NEVER came up?!

My Transition Program for job training always talks to us about advocating for ourselves. I appreciate you sharing your experience.

Self-advocacy is definitely something I’m struggling with at college this time around. I can be extremely persistent, but it’s *knowing what to do and how,* *what* to persist at, *how* to speak up, in these situations, that I’m struggling with (possibly bc I’m autistic). Considering trying speech therapy and/or coaching to get the tools I need?? Or maybe youtube can teach me how.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I’d love to hear more of your advocacy experiences. I don’t understand why teachers wouldn’t follow IEPs because they should want their students to succeed and help them get there.

Both of my grandsons had issues with getting the services outlined in their IEP.

Didn’t you have another video on your Channel about self advacy. You gave I think it was about five tips. I wanted to add it to the list of resources I’m putting togeather for students as part of the work I’m doing in my college’s access office, but couldn’t find it SGA in when I looked through your videos.

This makes me wonder what a nice way would be for an author to "autograph" a book for a blindie. A puff pen? Mini video or audio recording? Hm.
