I hope everyone paid attention when he said the most important word: *metronome.* Especially if you *think* you don't need one, you definitely need one. (just a tip from someone who was already teaching people to shred back in the 80's). Biggest mistake I ever made as a player was to *think* I didn't need one for the first few years I played because I had such good natural rhythm. They will make you more precise, cleaner, faster and generally more confident. They will also make good drummers love you, and crap drummers hate you, lols. But the audience will always always love you.

Great video! I own a guitar for years, but i always get "intimidated" by how much theory and even practice is required to make songs, improvise, etc. But, man, this video and the one about the beginner scales demystified it for me. You made it seem obvious, fun, useful. You made me realise the real importance of practicing picking patterns, learn the scales of a certain key (all of which always felt boring and, in reality, abstract for me), and well, the importance is HAVING LOADS OF FUN! Thank you Rob! Please, keep this beginner series going :D

Old man getting wild😂😂 But its never too late! I followed you the past few years, and loved the reviews and challenges at Andertons. Also witnessed the launch of your brand, getting popular and successful. It was your smart concept to ask us, the customers, what we would like to see on your guitars. Now, with the last few lessons of yours, I can literally feel, hear and see the gratitude towards your viewers, supporters, custumers . Like giving back, what you recieved. Great man with great attitude! Keep the lessons comming, I'm on fire !

Video lesson number 3! Since this is in my listening wheelhouse I was particularly pleased with the subject matter of this video. I first picked up the guitar after my father passed away in 85 and I was listening to all the Hair Metal, Classic Rock, heck anything with Guitar in it. I loved Metallica back in the day and Megadeth. Anyways I sold all my stuff back in 86 before I left to go into the US Army. I picked up the guitar this year again and am trying to learn the instrument for real and I find that these three videos of yours are really perfect because as you stated multiple times I can slow it down, stop it, put it down and pick it back up after time at work or with my daughters. I have really enjoyed these videos tremendously and look forward to the latest entry in this series. Thanks for the inspiration and Cheers!

I was originally self taught too (took theory lessons on piano later). Learning how to play by ear is something I highly suggest to others. Music is all about your ears. Take good care of them too, they're the most important thing you'll ever have for being a musician. I wish I'd started using ear plugs sooner for gigs and band practice. I have severe tinnitus now and it's distracting at best.

I love that too and I miss teaching guitar even more myself. Where I live now not many people play instruments at all, and I have yet to find any students. I guess I could do lessons on youtube, but I seem to be getting lazy about even just playing in my old age, lols. But it's really fun watching these, and I'm subscribed to a number of music theory channels and still manage to learn more. Especially about the stuff I didn't bother with so much as a youngster like blues, country and jazz. I was always more of a neo-classical, prog rock, and metal guitarist back then.

I love how it’s like I’m sitting down with you and having a lesson. I love the back-and-forth as you show something and then encourage us to stop and try it and come back and listen some more or to play along with you. It’s just great. And I definitely took advantage of it, grabbed my own vintage 80s super Strat (1989 Korean made Squier II) plugged into my katana mini and played along. Made for a great practice session. Thanks! @Snicker Uker : Always always try out an electric unplugged first. Then you can really hear the difference between even guitars of the exact same make and model better. Then after you've narrowed it down to 1 - 3 that sound the best unplugged, then plug them into the same amp you have at home, *not* a better amp. Way too many people plug into a better amp in the store, buy the guitar, then get home only to find the new guitar sounds only as good or worse than their old guitar.

I was lucky enough to see Metallica when I was a JR in high school in 1991. I used their music while lifting weights for American football and in my dream job until I was injured in the line of duty. Years later with a slight head injury that effected short term stuff (There are people out there with way worse brain injuries) my doctor told me to pick up and lean a new hobby. So I am driving home with the Metallica on and the same band that got me pumped for lifting got me to pick up a guitar. I started at the age of 44, I don't play much medal I love to play the blues. Thing is don't let people tell you that you are to old to pick up a guitar like some family and friends that I have proved wrong. I am not good but way better than they thought I would be after 2 years...thank you Rob for all the inspiration and lessons in all the videos you do on this channel and with Lee you are the coolest guitar company owner hands down

It would be cool if you could do some more intermediate inversions. Like different ways to play chords other than the usual E and A string bar chords.

One cool thing is to play the lowered fifth. If you are playing say a D power chord: root on the fifth fret A string, and the fifth on the 7th fret D string, just drop your first finger over the low E string on the fifth fret too. This is another A note, the fifth of D. Sounds a lot more heavy than just the simple power chord and it's also movable of course too. You can go a lot further though and play Major and minor thirds and even intervals that are more odd than those. Always use your ear. And sometimes metal does use open chords, and nothing wrong with getting more _jazzy_ too if you like the sound it makes. Metal is ever evolving and like anything artistic can be whatever you want it to be. That is in fact how metal was invented (and every other genre of music too).

Aylbdr Madison that’s a great comment, nice to see someone being cool to other players.

Aylbdr Madison Along similar lines, it's really easy with vary your power chords to play a diminished fifth (one semitone down on the string you're playing fifth) alternating with a perfect fifth or a minor second (one semitone up on the root string you're playing fifth) alternating with the root. Those are both badass metal intervals that are there for beginner guitarists. (Into the bargain dazzle your metal bandmates by knowing what a minor second and diminished fifth are!)

Eric Surely the entire point of watching KZbin instructional videos is that you don't have to “do the legwork”? Eventually you're probably going to have to look at some theory but maybe Rob can kick that can down the road for a while.

Hi iv just discovered your channel and its awesome! I have dyspraxia and find it hard to understand guitar teachers. But you have a gift I can understand and copy what your doing. I'm adding the 3 scales you need to know to this and I sound like a hero but my neighbour's hate me now.
