Thank you Beth! I was looking at Nancy Bush's book to make a pair of mitts and saw the braided cast on but could not figure out where to put the yarn, between colors. Simple enough and thank you for adding the joining the stitches. Great help!

I doubt I'd ever grasp that technique, but it's very interesting and certainly looks effective.

Interesting cast-on that’s rather striking. Is it very elastic? Wondering if it would work well for top-down socks. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, it is done on socks. If you find its too loose or folds over, then crochet single crochets into the back loops of the braided edge. Work into every other stitch, ie the loosest ones. Use yarn held double.
