My pattern calls for this cast on but requires an odd number of stitches. Since this casts on two stitches at a time, is there a way to cast on an odd rather than even number of stitches? Thank you!
@BethBrownReinselАй бұрын
@@jadeprice I simply cast-on the 1 extra stitch and within the next row or two. Decrease 1 st.

Thank you very much for your tutorial ! I have started knitting a mitten out of the book Knit like a Latvian, and the thumb directions are the same, except, by reading the directions, I wasn't getting the understanding of how to work the thumb part. My directions do say to put a certain number of stitches on waste yarn and then move them back onto the needle. which is different than this tutorial, but I can use this example for sure.
@BethBrownReinsel2 ай бұрын
HI Robin, I have a video specifically for the Latvian thumb. Look here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ62h5mfnZanapo You'll understand the thumb better with this "Afterthought Thumb" video. I hope you see this so you don't go down the wrong road with my Norwegian Thumb video. :)

Thank you, Beth. ovely simple tutorial, which I just came across as it was referenced in your recent newsletter. Norwegian Purl is much MUCH easier if, like me, you are an English style knitter using the two hand hold for stranded knitting. I had almost despaired of doing continental purl (hand cramps, frustration, lots of swearing) until I tried Norwegian purl. And I hated holding two yarns in my right hand as it felt clumsy to me and I couldn't get into a rhythm with dropping yarns and picking them up again. So Norwegian purl was the elegant solution.

Excellent tutorial! Thank you so much for taking the time to teach those of us who want to learn. In some Selbuvotter patterns, the knitter is instructed to cast-on in pattern, with both colours, when bridging the gap over the hole created by setting aside the thumb gusset stitches. How is that done?? I noticed in the tutorial that you only used the background colour when casting-on those stitches that bridge the gap. How visible will those newly cast-on stitches be, and will a single colour cast-on affect the seamless transition between the pattern on the back of the thumb, and the pattern on the palm? Cheers.
@BethBrownReinsel8 ай бұрын
The base of there thumb looks neater when casting on background sts over the thumb hole gap. But you can change the colors: *after casting on a st, bring the far yarn forward over the near yarn (and the near yarn under and to the back of the other yarn) , then cast on 1 more stitch. Repeat from *.

Hi again! I'm knitting the Newhaven gansey and am a bit stumped about how to join in the round with this cast-on. What happens with the 3-yarn slipknot? Thanks in advance!
@BethBrownReinsel9 ай бұрын
Hi! Work the cast-on first. Then begin the first round by taking the slip knot off the needle to let it hang there, place a st marker on the needle, join without twisting, and work the round ( which I believe is a purl round). Don’t pull out the slip knot until you have worked a few rounds as it will appear to undo the first few sts. Enjoy!

THANK YOU for this video! I've started a challenging colorwork piece worked flat and as a Norwegian purl-er I was going insane trying to figure out how to pick up speed on the wrong side. Echoing another commenter ... does your DVD cover trapping floats while Norwegian purling two colors on the wrong side? I'm manually twisting the yarns with my left hand each time -- trying to remember to twist first one way and then the other to avoid [even more of] a tangled mess in my lap. I'm hoping there's a better way!

Apologies in advance if this is a very basic question (about to start my first gansey) but what do you do with the other two balls of yarn when you start knitting after completing the cast-on? Do you cut those two yarns and weave the ends in afterwards? Thanks in advance and thank you for this super useful video!
@BethBrownReinsel Жыл бұрын
Yes that’s right. Leave the end connected that comes from the center of a ball and cut the other two yarns about 6” to weave in later. Enjoy knitting your gansey!

That looks very much like reversing the catching of floats on the front to make the pattern, but not floating all the way around the knit with both colours at the back. I have started knitting norwegian style for colours thanks to arne and Carlos and i see you hold your yarn in the left and knit in a norwegian style ( no fingers up in the air) i find it a very relaxed way of holding yarn, especially as a leftie 😊
