Andy, indeed was a friend of his. For those who don't know: he and Andy went to high school together. Andy was the sports star who made Brandon's time their miserable. Andy worked for the same high school later on (talk about karma), and so Brandon wrote this song sarcastically. Gotta say this is my favorite Killers song and probably even my most favorite song all together. Also: GOTTA LOVE THAT BRANDON BOT, THOUGH XD

Andy Messermith was Juab High School's star football player and wrestler. He worked there up until a few years ago as a coach. He got into a verbal and physical conflict (put him in a headlock) with a student and was placed on administrative leave and then changed schools. Some say he was a bully, some say they were great friends and keep in touch. No way of knowing which is true. I have scoured the internet Nephi Times News articles, local news sources, interviews and song interpretation forums for all my evidence. It is all accessible if you're curious.

Some people get upset when people say they interpret it as him clapping back at a former bully but it quacks like a duck to me too. I read Andy’s Dad worked at the school at the time both were attending. Nothing makes it so a bully can keep bullying like having the bully’s parent teaching at the same school. We’re all adults now and I’m sure Andy has grown out of his bully phase. Moral of the story: don’t bully because it’s wrong and the person you are bullying might write a song about you.

He is pretending to be playing football. Then touching down in a robotic fashion. A guy named Andy Messersmith went to school with Brandon Flowers. They went to Juab High School in Nephi, Utah, and Andy was the popular sports star, and he tortured Brandon and made his time there miserable. So Brandon wrote this song sarcastically. Andy become the school gym teacher but got fired after strangling a student in class after a bunch of pent up emotion from people jokingly playing/singing this song

I never found any sources saying what started the conflict, but I do know it did not take place in class. The verbal conflict began during class and then the physical violence ensued after school on school property. The cause of conflict was, however, kept secret from press. Most of the community was on the side of Messermith, and he was placed on administrative but decided to change schools. Also: some say the two were friends, including Andy's mother herself in an interview, and according to an online forum Andy himself said they still keep in touch. No way of knowing however.
