My older brother just passed away early this morning... One of the last things he our group chat was this song... One of his final sayings he would say is, "I'm here for a good time, not a long time!" And then usually blast this video. Even the night prior his passing him and I were just sharing some beers and herb, and the highlight of the night was when he requested this video which he started dancing and singing to. I'm completely heartbroken right now but one of the only things that stop the tears is blasting this video in his true showmanship nature, he would want the party to continue because you never know when it's your time.... 🥺

One of the greatest songs ever produced. It explores the line between confidence and hubris, which is where the power of the video comes from. As soon as I heard "...I go nothin' to learn" I started to hear this in song in a different light. Watching the video more clearly shows the downfall of each character because of that moral error. In spite of that, when I walk down city streets and feel like I'm ready for anything, this is the soundtrack playing in my head. The most kickass song ever made, IMHO.

I saw the drummer in the interview, and he said this: Drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. stated that the song's lyrics were "largely about how when we were younger we felt invincible. What it meant to be a 'man' in your 20's. Sort of your chest out, the breadwinner, nothing could stop you, invincible sort of thing. It's sort of tongue-and-cheeking that, how that is not really the point of being a man at all. It's actually more about compassion and empathy."

At the end of the video, all versions of "The Man" strike out in their ventures, but the song stays verbose and bold in its production and lyrics the whole way through. It seems to me to be an inspiring and rousing round of applause for the men who strive to be "The Man" in their respective worlds while not shying away from how easily the world can shatter that ego and humble you again and again.
