I have always been rather impressed with how the movies showed us things but hid things, while also managing to feel complete and make us feel fulfilled.

I did not know that. Never seen that behind-the-scenes photo before. Thanks for showing it. Having worked with a movie camera now, it's funny to watch the cameraman track along the severed arm from the gun to the - to the. - to the - hey!, wasn't there supposed to be a walrus monster at the end of that? You have to admire the mastery of how they put ideas and sensations into the viewer's mind one at a time. The shot is also super clear because it's probably done by the b roll camera team. Little details like tracking from the barman diving to the gun being drawn. Lukes shocked reaction and view drop.. About 5 cuts in 4 seconds. Masterful. Ps. I'm with the black cauterized stump team. This isn't supposed to be a gore film. A civilized weapon from a civilized age. Flame grilled walrus, hold the sauce. I must be hungry, that sound good.

I like the movie version of events as Obi-Wan just swiftly deescalates the threat the two pose and isn’t all malicious or overkill about it Seems more Jedi like.

He still seems to kill the two though. And flashing his lightsaber around is sure to attract the Empire's attention. But using unarmed techniques or Force suggestion wouldn't have been as memorable.

Walrus Man was one of my favorite aliens in Star Wars, along with Hammerhead, even have their 90’s PotF figures.

I think the POTF2 Hammerhead (Momaw Nadon) is one of the top best figures from that line. He looks great on orange card. :)

Although fairly seamless, the california cantina reshoots do have some weird anomalies that’s dont match up. Walrus man has both paws and hoofs in different shots.

There actually is a multi-eyed alien and a rodent alien in the cantina, so maybe those two are the two other aliens who were originally meant to be involved. The rodent is named Ranat and looks just like a rat in a red cloak. Basically one of those "blink and you miss them" background characters. The multi-eyed alien is Muftak, which is the big furry gray one (also looks quite monster-like) seen rubbing it's weird little proboscis during the montage of various aliens sitting around the cantina. That one's much more well known, got a large figure and also a Jedi version from the original Clone Wars cartoon. The alien Luke sold his landspeeder to in the alleyway also was a multi-eyed alien.

I wonder what a movie version of Alan Dean Fosters book would look like? You could follow with 'Splinter of the Minds Eye' by the same author. (No, don't give them ideas.) When I first saw Star Wars, I wondered why Walrus Man's severed arm bled? Even at that age I knew a laser would neatly cauterise a wound. And it looked like the strawberry syrup you used to get on ice cream, so it just made me think of ice cream. I was that kind of kid. 😂👍

None of that needless violence would have happened if Luke hadn't walked into the cantina, and cut one. You can't expect people to like you after that.

The novelization reveals some interesting details regarding differences between the film and the script. Notably, the Greedo scene was way different, as it was changed to include the dialogue from the Jabba scene after it was cut. This is why the Special Edition Jabba scene repeats the lines-the exposition was moved to the Greedo scene.

Just started reading the novelization again after several years and I realized that the book is actually pretty Gorey. Like it explaining in detail the fact that lia actually blows half a stormtroopers head off when they capture her at the beginning.

Well done research. All that's missing is how the Marvel Comics portrayed it. On pg 14 of Star Wars #2 we see Luke and Ben confronted by three aliens. The coloring is not distinct (orange blobs, green blobs mostly), but we can tell Walrus Man, an adult ugly human (Dr Evazan with orange-red hair), and a short somethingorother (could be rat, could be anything). There is only one panel of the fight. In one sideways swipe (indicated by pink coloring), Obi-Wan guts Dr Evazan--that part is clear. View of Walrus Man's body is partially blocked, so all we know is he is posed as if he's struck, and there's an effect suggesting he was struck, but we have to assume it was a belly cut. That's it. On the next page is a shot of Obi-Wan putting his lightsaber away (like a Samurai, as if the lightsaber has a solid blade!). The only damage we see is a sort-of purple-grey hand lying on the floor at panels edge where we can't see what it's attached to. Can't see blood either.

I can see Junkman like Kevin Costner in JFK: "From chin to the gonads. From chin to the gonads." I also wonder if the rodent alien is the one shown at the bar squeaking and reaching for his drink when they first enter.

There are two different 'rodents', one looks like a rat with a pointy snout coming out of a hood, and Kabe (sold with Muftak in action figures in the 90s) a short bat-faced alien with four snubby nostrils, the one seen squealing for her (yes, her) cup.

I love the special effects guy smoking a pipe, looks like a detective on the scene. :) By the way it looks and by the motion of the saber, I always thought Obi-Wan cuts Dr. Evazan in half at the waist. In the old comics is cuts the good Dr. in half down the center like you mentioned. I never heard of a third guy being in on it. I agree making more to the story after the incident makes it boring AND annoying. They can't leave stuff alone. I hate it when they add too much. Thanks for the video

That still doesn't answer the one burning question: why didn't Ben just use his Jedi mind-trick to convince the two that "this little one's not worth the effort"? Or did he just feeling like cutting off someone's arm over a trivial matter in a space bar? Kind of messed up, when you really think about it!

Doesn't work when Qui-Gon tries to convince the Toydarian, Watto. Wonder if it doesn't work when Ben Kenobi tries it on Ponda Baba as well. "This little one's not worth the effort" might have been the attempt, and it didn't sink in.

The modern-day audience version from Disney would have had some purple or green hair female aliens confronting Luke and Obi Wan demanding that they check their privilege and have them be stupid and apologize for existing and even coming into the LGBTQ++whatever new thing symbol and or number letter bar . Followed by a poorly choreographed laser sword fight where somebody gets gently poked with a saber and it is not even more that a slight inconvenient flesh wound that heals next day. Luke and Ben a easily beaten and the femaliens go on and finish the story and easily beat the patriarchy I mean the empire. Opse i just leaked a part of the hard reboot of the original trilogy.

Dr E throws Luke in the movie. In the movie, they are dead. Just listen to the screams from both of them and how they trail off. Dead. No way they just walked out making no other sounds. Plus I see a Jedi taking out a lightsaber as a samurai would draw his sword. Quickly and deadly. It’s the galactic version of fuck around and find out.
