The animators were still influenced by Kimba, just like 90s kids were influenced by The Lion King. Disney’s stance is still ludicrous. They marketed TLK as an entirely “original” narrative when it’s really just Hamlet and Kimba thrown in a blender.

No, they were pretty open about how they took inspiration from Hamlet and Bambi. Kimba is really not similar at all to The Lion King, story-wise. It just has some of the same animals, and takes place in Africa. That's like saying Black Panther is a ripoff of Blade because they both star a black superhero.

Takayuki Matsutani, the president of Tezuka Productions, the company that created Kimba the White Lion along with Tezuka, said in 1994 (the year The Lion King came out) that “quite a few staff of our company saw a preview of 'The Lion King', discussed this subject and came to the conclusion that you cannot avoid having these similarities as long as you use animals as characters and try to draw images out of them.” Yoshihiro Shimizu of Tezuka Productions has refuted rumors that the studio was paid hush money by Disney and stated that they have no interest in suing Disney, explaining that “we think it's a totally different story” and that “any similarities in their plots are based in the facts of nature and therefore are two different works.” Also, the son of Osamu Tezuka, Makoto, wrote about the controversy in his book ‘The Genius’ Son’, in it Makoto acknowledges that Kimba and The Lion King are two different stories with different themes, and if the latter was about a white lion who spoke with humans, then he would not be able to pardon the similarities, but that wasn’t the case so according to him The Lion King isn’t a ripoff of Kimba. He even mentioned how his father (Tezuka) was inspired by Bambi and The Lion King has been referred to as Bambi in Africa, so there’s nothing wrong with Disney using stuff from their own work. So I don’t understand how can people say that The Lion King is a ripoff when neither Tezuka’s son nor Tezuka Productions supports them on this. Not to mention the HUGE differences in the characters’ designs in both productions, the lions from The Lion King look more realistic because the animators who drew them took a trip to Africa in order to make the characters look as realistic as possible and those who couldn’t travel had lions brought to the studio so that they could adapt their appearances and mannerisms into the characters. Tezuka’s characters, although they look amazing, don’t look as much as their respective counterparts in real life, Kimba’s movements while he runs aren’t very much like the lions from real life. As for the hyenas being evil henchmen, if you’re going to make a movie in which the lions are the good guys, then the logical progression would be for the hyenas to be the villains given that both lions and hyenas are natural born enemies in real life. Next, the wise mandrill part, Rafiki is a wise mandrill, but Dan’l? Not that much, given that Kimba had to stop him from doing something reckless a couple of times and Dan’l didn’t always give the best of advices (e.g. he told Kimba to get revenge on humans for killing Kimba’s parents, which would prompt a war between animals and humans). Dan’l is more like Kimba’s grumpy uncle, Kimba has called him as such a couple of times, while Rafiki is more like Simba’s counselor and he is very good at giving advice (e.g. he told Simba that although the past can hurt he can also learn from it). Then the evil lion with a scar on his left eye, Claw was huge and was nothing but a big bully that didn’t want for Kimba to be in charge, but Claw was never king and Kimba never had to fight him to reclaim his title, again, Kimba only fought Claw because Claw was a bully, but that’s it. Scar was suave and sinister, he was also smart and cunning, and he did manage to become king after getting rid of both Mufasa and Simba. Simba had to fight Scar in order to become king, Kimba didn’t have to fight anyone to become king, he started ruling almost from the moment he was born. There’s also the fact that Claw was in no way related to Kimba and his father while Scar was Mufasa’s brother and Simba’s uncle. Finally, in an interview that came out in 2003 or 2004, Fred Patten, the author of ‘Watching Anime, Reading Manga’ said that The Lion King didn’t plagiarize from Kimba and that the Kimba fans were making the issue bigger than it really was. In case you don’t know, Fred Patten was friends with Osamu Tezuka and he was an avid fan of Kimba, he even wrote an entire essay back in 1995 in which he claimed that The Lion King was a ripoff, an essay that was later on published on his book, and yet about 9 years later (the same year his book was published) Patten backpedaled on his words. By the way, none of the people that worked on The Lion King said that they were inspired by Kimba, they said that they did hear from it and that it bothered them that Disney’s legal department declared that none of them knew that Kimba existed, but they (the staff from The Lion King) said that Kimba played no part in their inspiration for The Lion King. Animators Tom Sito and Mark Kausler have both stated that they had watched Kimba as children in the 1960s. However, Sito maintains there was “absolutely no inspiration” from Kimba during the production of The Lion King, and Kausler emphasized Disney's own Bambi as being their model during development. The idea for The Lion King came from Jeffrey Katzenberg back in 1988, when he talked about his life and talked about when he lost his father, so he wanted to make a movie that portrayed that moment in life in which someone stops being a child to become an adult. That’s why even though the theme of The Lion King is about the ‘Circle of Life’, the heart of the story is the bond between father and son. A theme that was rarely seen in Kimba since Kimba never met his father, Panja (Caesar), and when Kimba became a parent himself he was terrible at it. Also, if you’re going to say that Disney stole from Kimba just based on a few similarities, then we can argue that Kimba stole from the comic King of Beasts that came out in 1940, there are quite the obvious similarities between that comic and Kimba.

@Assassinater Wolf As a matter of fact, the comic King of Beasts actually portrayed a lion named Simba, in one of the comic issues Simba was actually portrayed as a white lion, and Simba also had to battle with a rival lion and hyena henchmen. So again, based on your logic then Kimba is just a copy of King of Beasts. Also, in the 2000 Kimba film they made the evil lion Kimba’s uncle, just like Scar was Simba’s uncle in the Disney film, and The Lion King came out in 1994, six years BEFORE the 2000 Kimba film. According to your logic, does that mean that the 2000 Kimba film took the idea from The Lion King without giving any credit to Disney? Because if we’re going to follow your line of thought, then yes, Kimba also stole from others without giving proper credit. And again, there are also the testimonies of Tezuka’s son and of the president of Tezuka Productions, they made it perfectly clear that The Lion King did not copy from Kimba, and it’s just your word against theirs, evidently The Lion King is not a copy.

I appreciate that you made this video I think you're missing the point. Kimbo the White Lion started airing in North America in 1966. Is the film 100% like the lion king, no. But you are misunderstanding what Disney actually does. They take all of the major creative points, such as the way characters look and the main story points, and change Minor details such as quirks about the personality or backstory. They changed just enough to keep it different in a court of law, but still every major point about it. That's what Disney does and there are multiple examples of Disney doing this over the years. Where do you think they came up with the ideas for the original Disney fairy tales? From Grimms Fairy tales. While I will give credit where credit is due and say that Disney has created a lot of things that are original, they have also plagiarized a lot of people to get where they are. This is no different. Saying that the lion king is not a ripoff of kimba the White lion, or that Disney didn't steal the idea, is basically the argument of the creator of Deadpool saying that he didn't rip off Deathstroke because deathstroke's costume is orange and blue and Deadpool is red and black. 😂 Disney stole this idea. No question about it. It was not an original story. Maybe some parts of it they came up with on their own, but they took quite a bit from it. There's a difference between being inspired by something and creating something new from it, and then blatantly taking all of the major things about a particular thing and copying it. That's what they did. So yes, everyone in the world that takes an original idea and uses all of the main things about it is ripping them off. They're riding off of the coattails of their success.

I might've had a small confession about this, the Truth is when I watched the 2019 Lion King remake I sorta liked the remake even though it was Emotionless but I didn't care because watching the Remake helps me out on letting go of my past and to get my mind off of the whole controversy nonsense, If my opinion on the 2019 remake doesn't count much? don't worry, you're fine. Sure the 2019 remake didn't hold up to the original all that well, but that doesn't mean there aren't things to enjoy in it - the scenes with Sarabi and Scar for example were interesting and expanded on Sarabi's character AND her relationship with Scar.

I agree Lion King isn't a rip off as it is a successful Disney movie and still is up to this day. Rip offs I consider to be as not successful, plus the art styles of Kimba the White Lion and the Lion King are very different. The story and name might be a little similar but as for style, it's very different. I love both as they both offer a great story with talking animals.

May I remind you that all in all, Kimba has about 3,000 minutes worth of animated footage, while the lion king is just a single movie. They were okay with the fact that simba was a ripoff of kimba and 2) they couldn't afford to go against a company as big as Disney. Tezuka production was a small company back then. It still is compared to Disney. Stop encouraging white washing bruh or at least have the balls or the decency to admit it.

Movies all over the world (media in general for that matter) do this all the time, mainly from time constraints/ budget issues/ ideas that can't work. Besides, especially nowadays when SO MUCH media being made all over the world, it's impossible to make an idea and not have it relate to something else, even if by accident. Besides, if they kept some of these concepts in then it wouldn't grant em the "kid friendly" rating they want to go for. Here's the Kimba plot summery (1965 I assume you're talking about): Panja is killed by Humans BEFORE KIMBA WAS EVEN BORN. His mother is then taken on a ship, where Kimba is born, and then after a few months he escapes said boat and returns to the Jungle as a promise to his mother, and to get his throne claimed (which he gets soon after arriving). From there is a bunch of misadventures with Kimba trying to civilize the Jungle while keeping peace against numerous other animals / humans / Bubu the one-eyed Lion (which extends for 52 episodes in the OG anime might i add, with each episode with its own mini-plot to go with it that covers any and all types of story they could do). And if you're talking about personal feelings keeping Kimba away ... how can Kimba run away from home if he wasn't even born yet? He had no part in that decision whatsoever. B) i don't think it works that you're defending the 1965 anime by using proof from a completely different version from 1989. While yes, Bubu did in a way exile Kimba from the Jungle for breaking Panja's laws of no violence (NOT for murdering his father), You can't say the Lion King ripped off just "Kimba" you're gonna have to at least say which one it is they're ripping it off from because "Kimba" isn't a single show, it's a whole franchise that's changed and adapted with each re-telling. C) There's WAY more that happens after Bubu's taken out of the story. What about Kimba's encounter with the Mammoth? The civilization of animals in his jungle to act like Humans? Kimba's journey up Mount Moon with an expedition team where he DIES AT THE END? That lion at the end of the series is his son Rune, not Kimba. It didn't end when Kimba defeats Bubu and (I hopefully assume) you know it. WAY after that is so much more story they made a second anime "Leo the Lion", which BTW Bubu never shows up. And before you point out a scene with two Lions fighting over a cliffside, that's not Bubu, that's a BLUE LION named Zamba who rules over a coalition of Lions (and only appears once might i add). Only one shot doesn't show him blue and people use THAT to compare to the Lion King which is ... stupid :/. That's not even the same Lion or in the same "pride rock" as you'll probably point out, it's just a random place. D) The way you said it sounds like the other way around - that Kimba ripped off the Lion King, based off your description. A plot like that would make the movie a ripoff for sure, but again Lion King barely did anything in common to the original 1965 series. Everything that people point out not only are different episodes apart in the anime, but hold little value to the original story since they're never brought up again (most of the time). Context is important.
