Thank you for sharing this. I can't believe I came across it but I am glad I did, while sick in bed. I grew up with Yul, and remember finding out he passed right before I was born and being CRUSHED because even as a young girl I was totally taken with him (and Gene Kelly, and a few others who I also found out I had no chance with) and I think a part of me dreamed of meeting him one day or playing Anna opposite him on Broadway. It just speaks on his charisma and personality through the screen. A fun little fact: my chiropractor got to see him on Broadway when she was little and she was in one of the front rows, and she stood up in her seat and shouted "ETCETERA ETCETERA ETCETERA!!" at the top of her lungs right after he did that part and he actually caught her eye and beamed and winked at her!!

I was at the last performance of this show, I still have the ticket stub. Mr. Brynner signed my program after the show and I was thrilled. It was my first real Broadway show. Thank you, Belle, for giving me that once in a lifetime opportunity I shall never forget, and to Irma-Estel LaGuerre (Lady Tiang) for being so kind to me.

Thank you very much for sharing this special video - unfortunately I never had the opportunity to see the magnificent Yul Brynner live - but now i finally got at least a glimps of his live performance... which is fantastic...especially considering the fact that he was severely suffering from lung cancer at this time, its amazing to see how he acts and performs...Thanks again.. P.S.Ive been combing throught KZbin for the last two weeks to find a video from The King an I with Yul Brunner form 1985 - and now i finally found it.. its a real treasure!!!! RIP Yul - Love Sandra

Thank you SO much for sharing this video! I was born in '82 so I was way too young to see Yul perform live. This is such a gem to be able to see him on Broadway, through KZbin at least! Many thanks! xo Yul Brynner is my most favorite male actor of all time.

I saw a live performance of the King and I with Yule Brynner. I believe it was in the 80's and I saw it in Cincinnati Ohio at the Taft. Wow what a magical and memorable performance. Thanks for uploading this video it is a great memory!

The first professional production I ever saw was the road show of this in Atlanta in 1982. I was mesmerized. I am so glad this was caught on film. It is sad that you can tell Yul Brynner was beginning to suffer from his final illness. His moves during the polka are subdued and he is clearly exhausted during the curtain call.

I had the fortune of seeing "The King and I" on Broadway with Yul Brynner, and it was amazing! Even walking into the building and getting into the theatre was almost magical. I believe it was the performance that I saw, or possibly a soundtrack I heard, but it was of "Shall We Dance", and right after doing it, Yul goes "come we do it again!", and they did!. I had wondered if it was planned, or what, but now realize that it was most likely his call as to whether to repeat, but was set up so that he could make the choice, and in typical "King" fashion.

It was written into the show and I suppose that sometimes the actors have the option not to do it.

This is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!! thank you for sharing! I'm kinda mad that ANNA's hoop skirt looks the way it does while the silhouette of the ensemble women is perfect! and that is literally my only negative comment about the entire performance!

Ever since seeing the Uncle Tom's Cabin play IN the movie seeded the obsession for viewing true traditional siamese ballet (Khon) performances and neighboring countries of Thailand to see the differences that were done for the film performance. The white makeup on the characters was in reference to actual masks used in the 14th - 18th century matching the time Anna's stay occurred. The makers of the movie gave the luxury of faces being painted instead. The head crowns and costume styles are as seen in traditional Khon with key design details reserved for character type. George and Eliza are both wearing what would be expected of a noble prince and lady in waiting. The Uncle Tom and Topsy were the two *unique* mask types for an American tale. The evil Simon had a mask similar to the ogre/demon mask with distinct fangs going sideways in front of the mouth representing the devilish characteristics of a villain. There's a small bit of mix and match for maintaining the integrity of the art itself and making it tangible for a western viewers translation.

Let's face it, just until war is finally through, each and every man, from young age to old age, must join the army, each and every woman, from young age to old age, must take a job, and above all, each and every child, from Pre-K to Senior, must go to the countryside.

This is wonderful and thank God for it. Can anyone (theatreaficionado?) verify the place and date of this performance? Broadway or on the road? If Broadway it must have been the last run at the Broadway theatre circa 1985. If on the road it could be many houses in the one to two years prior that MBP was playing Mrs. Anna. Any help appreciated!

It was mentioned in a biography that his son helped with some of the voice over because of his vocal chords giving out. I wonder if this was one of those performances.

One must wonder why the lines from 44:34 to 44:42 were cut from the revival play with Daniel Dae Kim in it?

Only after, at least, 18 years in both school and camp, starting with Pre-K, and finishing with Senior, shall a man, or woman marry whomever he, or she deems truly worth falling in love with, and spend the rest of his, or her life by his, or her side as his, or her truly equal math, that is, of course, whenever he, or she is ready.

Wonderful performances! But does anyone know why the actors were performing against a background of near-pitch darkness? Why was there so little in the way of illumination?

Maybe, the best way to discipline, without breaking spirits, is to let true authority derive from the consent of fair and just government, and not let false authority derive from the threat of unfair and unjust force.
