B.B used to tour constantly, travelling North America in his custom made bus. And when he came to town (SWIDT) he'd have the bus park outside the record store where I worked and come in and do some shopping. He'd buy some music but he was there mostly for the movies. He was an avid film fan, and probably could have hosted a week on AMC. Fun fact: his favorite genre was Film Noir. In later years, when his diabetes made it too difficult for him to be on his feet, we'd get him a stool and a beverage and he would sit by the cashiers while his assistant went around the store picking up CDs and DVDs. Then he would go through them: Got it, need it, got it, etc. The best part was when customers would come up to make their purchases and do a double take. And he would sign autographs and talk to everyone who approached him. Always gracious and charming. Then he would make his purchase (he got the "Blues Legend" discount), wave goodbye and say, "See you next year!". RIP B.B.

BB King gets more music ot of one note than most show offs get out one hundred notes played fast in the same space of time. He plays from deep down in his soul, uses dynamics [loud and soft], and sings and plays like he means it [which he does] with authority yet entertains from the highest level of joy to his audience, cajoles them to particpate. he reaches out to all people, note there are many skin colors in the audience, which is the coolect thing ever. We're all on this sinking ship together....

B.B never showed off. He just let his soul flow through "Lucille" and straight into our thankful hearts!! I was only blessed to be in his presence once in concert, but I feel extremely lucky to have experienced him live. I would think he listened to Sister Rosetta Thorpe in his youth. In the "Elvis" bio-pic from last year there's a scene with B.B.King, Rosetta Tharpe and Little Richard all playing in the same room together. Don't think that ever really happened, but I think they were trying to show some of Elvis' influences. I know B.B. had a radio show in the Memphis area in the early '50s that Elvis must have listened to.

B.B. favorite singer was Frank Sinatra, in his autobiography,he spoke about being a "Sinatra nut". Went to bed listening to Frank's classic album "IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS". Frank had arranged for B.B. to play at the main clubs in Las Vegas. B.B. died n his sleep from Vascular Dementia, his health problems high blood pressure and diabetes. He became a spokesman in the fight against the disease.

My oldest son (now 32) loved the blues in general and BB King in particular when he was a toddler. He and I had the unforgettable joy of seeing BB King live not just once but twice at a local venue here in Massachusetts when my boy was a pre-teen. This video may have been from that time, because BB King performed sitting down like this during the later years of his long performing career. This video immediately brought back my memories of those two fabulous shows with my boy. I saw an interview with BB King where he said that a major reason for his distinctive call-and-response blues guitar style is that he was never able to play and sing at the same time. He transformed what might have been an obstacle for a different musician into his distinctive and instantly recognizable trademark sound.

My late husband, who was a very dedicated Blues musician, always said that the Blues isn't sad, or isn't supposed to be. Anyone who plays it is announcing that "his woman done left and, while it's a bummer, he'll be just fine, give him a minute." I've always loved that description.

As a trained guitarist I always found Blues artistry fascinating and extremely difficult to master. It is a feel and heart art form. I have played several different types of music and I was initially classically trained. I fell in love with Stevie Ray Vaughan and BB King when I began to explore this musical form back in the 70 s. These two men sent me on a journey that also introduced me to the likes of Rosetta Thorpe which as a female guitarist was so exciting. These are my top three blues specialists. Happy to see you representing them on your show. Nothing better than a Blues guitar singing to get you going in the morning. Keep it going children. All my admiration. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.

Saw BB and Baby Blue Bland together for one night only at the Circle Lounge in San Francisco Jan 1981. The theater only seated 150 people and was configured in a circle, thus "Circle Lounge" and the stage revolved very slowly so matter where you were seated you got a great view. And you were very close to the stage. What was really cool was right before the night was over he invited the whole audience back to the Holiday Inn they were staying at for an after concert buffett. Absolutely the best live performance I have yet been to. And my fiancé was with me and was pregnant with my oldest daughter at the time and she had my daughter later that morning. My daughter still says BB is her favorite performer. Maybe she heard him while relaxing in her mom's belly.

A friend of mine, the guitar player in my band, got to spend some time with him after his performance. Parliament/Funkadelic (Eddie Hazel, guitar), "Maggot Brain." Gary Moore, "Only Fool In Town" or "Midnight Blues." Richard and Linda Thompson (Richard on guitar) "Don't Renege On Our Love." Amber, in the Delta area a lot of paths led back to Charley Patton, who played blues guitar and who met a number of bluesmen from that area. I don't know iff BB met him or not but Patton influenced a lot of them. BB mentioned in his autobio two jazz guitar players, Charlie Christian (possibly the first performing electric guitarist, played with Benny Goodman) and Django Reinhardt (a Belgian gypsy with a unique style.) BB King knew a lot more than he let on.
