The Cold War. The Iron Curtain. Red China. James Bond was in the movies but there were easily 8-10 popular spy-related shows on US television in the 1960's. The theme music often took its cue from the famous guitar riff in the Bond movies. In the case of Secret Agent Man, they used a famous pop musician to perform the theme, also like the Bond movies. Mission Impossible and James Bond are the surviving franchises, but they had lots of competitors (and take-offs) back in the day!

"Secret Agent Man" was a big hit for Johnny Rivers and was also the theme song for a mid-sixties TV show called "Secret Agent" (in the UK it was called "Danger Man"). The show was about a secret agent, what else. After the James Bond movie "Goldfinger" came out everything went spy crazy in this country. Suddenly there were all kinds of Spy/Secret Agent movies and TV shows. Some of the more famous TV shows were "Man Fron UNCLE", "I Spy", "Mission Impossible", "Get Smart", and "The Avengers." Then there were lots of spy themed games and toys (Anyone besides me remember the "Six finger"). It was a fun time to be a kid, although most of those toys would be banned today.

This is the theme song to the old British TV show Danger Man (retitled Secret Agent in the United States (aka like a james bond type show), broadcast between 1960 and 1962, and again between 1964 and 1968. Only the USA TV show had Johnny Rivers singing the theme song. Filmed all in Black/White. Ps you should listen to the song (Secret Agent Man/James Bond is back) done by actor (Bruce Willis) from his album (The Return of Bruno), love this version just as much, do the album version to hear all the special effects at the beginning of the song & you'll luv it too......❤😁😎🎶🎸🎤 Also try Bruce Willis's song (Respect Yourself) w/ The Pointer Sisters from the same album there is a official video for it. Even actor Don Johnson sings try His official videos for (Heartbeat), (Tell It Like It Is) & (Star Tonight w/ Willie Nelson song written by Bob Seger). so does Eddie Murphy sing he's got lots of videos, even one with Snoop Dogg when Snoop Dogg was called Snoop Lion (sounds kind of Reggae like) and even one with the King of Pop Michael Jackson as well, called (whatzupwitu) Eddie Murphy has 3 singing albums. There's around 8 official videos of Eddie, you can find. You got to watch all the James Bond films there is 26 movies to watch & react to on your other channel. And on this channel you can react to all the James Bond themes there's a live performance or a official video for every single Bond theme There is 24 Eon films (Eon Productions Limited is a British film production company that primarily produces the James Bond film series) There is 2 Non-Eon films Witch are 1- Casino Royale 1967 starring David Niven, this is sort of a James Bond spoof type film spoofing other spy type films at the time.( yes there are two Casino Royale films the other was done in 2006 and considered an official Bond film) 2- Never Say Never Again 1983 starring Sean Connery trying to make a comeback in the bond series also starring actress Kim Basinger These films are not considered official Bond films because they were done by other companies the first being done by Columbia pictures & the second one done by Warner Bros

Secret Agent was the American name of the show that came from Britain called Danger Man. Patrick McGoohan played the main character, John Drake, and he was handsome and smooth. As others have noted, there was a sort-of spinoff series after "Secret Agent" (the show for which this was the theme), also starring Patrick McGoohan, called "The Prisoner" (I believe McGoohan was also the producer) and it took the message Amber noted in this song -- that "they've given you a number and taken 'way your name" -- to the next level, with McGoohan again playing a secret agent, but one who tries to resign and is kidnapped and held prisoner on an island where everyone ONLY has numbers; he is "Number Six" and is subjected to constant questioning and psychological torture to learn "why" he resigned. It was shown on CBS as a summer replacement series two years in a row and is a cult classic. Secret agent shows and movies were very big in the 60s after the success of the first James Bond film, "Dr. No" in 1962. Not only "Danger Man" / "Secret Agent" but "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." "The Girl from U.N.C.L.E." "I Spy" and the spoof "Get Smart." Plus the "Flint" movies with James Coburn, the Dean Martin "Matt Helm" movies, and the series of films with Michael Caine as secret agent Harry Palmer. And more that I'm forgetting.

You guys have actually heard this song before at the end of the first Austin Powers movie

Thanks for Johnny Rivers! I consistently enjoy your channel. Please do a reaction to THE SMITHEREENS!!! They are one of the most underrated rock bands this country has ever had, but once you hear them do "Top of the Pops" or "Behind the Wall of Sleep", you'll get it. This is a group more people need to hear. Stay safe & have fun.

I second the nomination. There's not bad song in their catalog, but my favorite is kind of an obscure one, Cut Flowers.

One of the best TV theme songs. It hit number 3 on the Billboard charts in 1966. Johnny Rivers also did a really good version of Midnight Special, which was used as the theme song of the late-night concert show of the same name.

I got to see him live in concert back in 1971. I’ve always said it was the best concert I had ever been to. I think because it was so personal. I have recently been to one that rivaled that concert, The Nicotine Dolls put on a great concert, they have so much fun. You should check out one of their best songs - What Makes You Sad

This was the theme song for the Secret Agent TV show and starring Patrick McGoohan. In the U.S. it was shown 1965-8 when everything was about James Bond, then The Man From U.N.C.L.E, and anything British. Johnny Rivers covered Chuck Berry's Maybelline and Memphis and then had a string of original hits. Favorites are Summer Rain and Poor Side of Town

This theme song was particular to an American audience. "Secret Agent" was a TV show imported from England in the early-half of the 60s. However, the show there was titled "Danger Man" w/o this title music.

He wrote this in the 60s after the first "James Bond " movie came out. The movies were so popular he did it just for fun.

Sloan and Barri wrote this for the TV show.

@@debjorgo Always wondered if it was written specifically for the TV show, or if it had been recorded before and they then licensed it for the show.

@@johnsilva9139 I always loved the song. It was years later when I heard it was the theme for a show. I read on wiki a while back that it was written for the American airing of the show, using American star Johnny Rivers.

Since it's Summer, try "Summer Rain" for your next Johnny Rivers reaction. It's totally different than the other JR songs you've reacted to. It's very romantic, Amber will love it.
