2:30 In the unicode standard, kanji have a full width version, from when japanese computers had all their own systems and terminals, and half width, for use in regular terminals. There's some other differences, but mostly the half width are literally just squished full width. I believe that half width is still mostly used in terminals and anything that relies on characters being normalized, and full width can be used for legibility and normalcy in like text docs and stuff.
@PercyPanleoАй бұрын
To add onto this, the "previous candidate/conversion" key is part of the system for selecting kanji to type, as many kanji in Japanese have the same pronunciation (excluding pitch accent) and as such are typed the same way when using kana or romaji. This key, as well as the key on the opposite side of the space bar, are used for scrolling through the list of possible kanji (and kana if you're typing with romaji)

7:50 When the DM100 was released, a lot of businessmen in Japan would have likely been using a flip phone or candybar phone that wouldn't really work well with a Bluetooth keyboard, and I suspect that the Bluetooth functionality was meant primarily for using it with a PC. Students probably also used it as a distraction free note taking device, given that it's still decently common for students in Japan to buy flip phones instead of full smart phones to reduce distractions. Interestingly, they actually made a model with an e-ink display instead of an LCD display called the DM30. It's still one of the only digital word processors to use an e-ink display, and imo it's form factor is still ahead of every e-ink word processor that's come since

I think this is it. Hence the "Japanese-English" and "English-Japanese" buttons next to the screen. Electronic dictionaries were big in East Asia before the smartphone era. What you saw were the humble muhenkan and henkan keys, which are used to basically tell the computer how to handle the kana that was just input Muhenkan tells it "nope, don't convert that to kanji", henkan tells it "pick out the next conversion", because some words are homophones or overlap syllables or whatnot.

I think the point of note-taking devices is distraction-free writing. There's other tools like the AlphaSmart series, that are used for that kind of thing. It's good for people with weak willpower who want to put the phone in another room and just bang out a draft or two.
@MattMcIrvin17 күн бұрын
While a phone with a Bluetooth keyboard can do everything it can do, I can see the attraction of a dedicated writing/notetaking device without other features to distract you or get in the way. Maybe just because I come from an earlier age when all features weren't merged into the same gadget. The Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 100 was a slab-shaped 1980s proto-laptop with a full keyboard that only did a few things, and even with its very limited battery-backup memory, journalists and similar people liked it so much for writing in the field that there's still a community keeping these things alive TODAY.

2:21 On a Japanese keyboard, you must enter the reading in hiragana or katakana and then convert it to kanji. That is what “conversion” means. 2:29 The Japanese standard has two ways to type numbers, symbols, and katakana: full-width and half-width. !←Full-width ! ←Half-width As the name “full-width” implies, the width of the character is slightly wider than that of half-width characters. Literally, half-width characters require one byte of space, while full-width characters require two bytes. At that time, half-width katakana was widely used in personal computers to reduce the file size. (Nowadays Japanese people often use it to switch between alphabetical and Japanese input)
