the mid-nineties KOF games arguably have the best fighting game soundtracks ever, along with the mid-90s Fatal Furies...SNK sound team outdid themselves in this period.

No other fighting game series had this level of quality in their music, style or story back in the 90s. Maybe Darkstalkers, but while Capcom had the gold, SNK was coming out with the platinum. Nothing came close to KOF!

I love this theme not only in isolation as a great fighting game tune, but also for how well it encapsulates the spirit of the characters on the team. 0:01 to 0:27 is the alluring, enchanting music that makes me think of Mai coming out and dazzling her opponent before they take a fan to the face and realize they have a real fight on their hands. 0:28 to 0:55 is Yuri getting out there with some premium karate and punching leagues above her weight. 0:56 to 1:09 is when things look dire and King comes in as the clencher, taking hits and throwing brutal punches and kicks that feel like they ought to be coming from a 6'5" male kickboxer. And then the rest of the song just intermixes those parts until the drum solo at 2:09 - 2:26, which feels like "comeback from the brink of defeat" music. :D The whole tune just feels like it has a story arc built into it, and I love that!
