The W&F on the first tape is a problem of the TDK D than may occur after some time. Made a simple Wow&Flutter test on Instagram on the DD9: instagram.com/tv/CLy_0s4DKEK/?igshid=15mx8xs4h7pnz N.B. I had to remove the first test with a pre-recorded cassette because UMG blocked my video!

I was 15 years old when this one was brought to the market. I owned the DDII, DDQuartz and a few others. They were essential gear to me. I remember what an event it was when friends gave new mixtapes to me. Selection of music was so limited but yet I enjoyed listening so much. And today I pay 10 bucks a month for having access to nearly all music that has ever been made on a tiny 120 gram handheld, Bluetooth Headphones that sound flawless. And it will play up to 20 hours without changing batteries - but the fascination isn’t the same.

For me, the DD9 was a hard to buy item back then in my country. It wasn't for sale to the general public, but Sony was given it to some retailers as a sales promotional item. I was lucky that a department store was selling theirs. The tapes that I used mostly on it are the Sony and Denon's ceramic shell metal ones.

When you hear a prerecorded cassette and a cassette of the same type you've done yourself you begin to suspect that the labels didn't care realy much about this format they have to "record" by a long process (even if it was done at double or triple speed) and not press in second like a vinyl or a cd. Cassetes, born in mono poverty for voice only, are better than we remember.

Sony stole the cassette player design from a German inventor named Andreas Pavel, who patented the design in 1977. Pavel called his design the StereoBelt. Pavel spent 20 years of his life fighting Sony in court and almost went bankrupt. In 2003 after Pavel threatened Sony with legal suits, Sony settled for $1.23 million to shut him up. Pavel is the father of cassette players. Give this a like to pay respect to the original inventor.

I tried one of these...well, actually I tried about five of them...brand new, straight from the Sony dealer...and every single one had the exact same fault: low audio in the reverse playback direction. Measured it with a Teac test tape & a Neutrik audio test set...the audio level in reverse side playback was about 80% that of fwd playback! At least it didn't have head azimuth issues in rev mode (unlike virtually every other auto-reverse model), but the level issue was a deal breaker for me. The only walkman I ever truly enjoyed was the WM-DC2...and that wasn't "perfect" either...but it sounded great. The Boodo Khan was also pretty decent, though sadly my "new in box" one has finally succumbed to the cracked gear issue (despite me fitting a replacement original part several years back, when they were still available). My WM-D6 (original version, pre-D6C) is still going strong though 🙂 Cassette tapes basically suck unless you have the best of the best in every department. Nothing made today, and probably nothing made in the future, will come close to being even *acceptable* quality.

After watching your excellent review and video, I bought one of these, serviced from a reputable seller in Japan. I was surprised how great it sounds, and I have a D-6C for comparison. W&F of 0.1% RMS weighted is really quite excellent. It's not likely to get out to 20khz in freq response unless the azimuth is spot on, which might happen sometimes in a cassette portable player. Wow and flutter is the big one in walkmans and if you can get below .2%, you are doing really well. I think there is a reason why W&F is not usually listed in the specs for walkman type players. I’m 57 now and over the years when I found an interesting looking Walkman like player at thrift shops or flea markets for a few bucks, I’d snatch it and put it in a shoebox with the others. Then recently I was curious what these things go for now and I was stunned, one AIWA unit is around $600! The others are worth a lot less but a few are up there in price. I always looked for walkmans that had metal outer and inner frames/shells which is usually the biggest clue to quality. There are a lot of places to buy new bands and places that can repair/restore those upper end units. I’m grateful the new generation listeners are interested in maintaining these.

After seeing the pain that hides inside and the massive exploded prices online, i´ll laugh at it and pass. It doesn´t add anything my DD11 doesn´t have, except the dolby C and auto reverse. Since i´ll never carry around anything bigger than my Sony WM EX 674, it´s out of question to use dolby c to me. Dolby B and good type II tape is already perfectly fine to me. I don´t even use any dolby for my type I recordings, so i have an excuse to give my "we are rewind" another go, which neither plays 70us equalization, nor has any noise reduction decoding.

Just occasionally you get an excellent pre recorded cassette. My copy of Bronski Beat's Age of Consent was superior to the cd in my opinion. The Damned's Phantasmagoria was good too. I think both might have been chrome. For the most part the minimal wow and flutter and stereo separation were the stand out features of this model you demoed especially with cassettes 2 and 3. The fidelity of that China Crisis cassette was most disappointing I have to say. Clearly a failing of the recording as opposed to the unit it was played on thankfully

Those TDK (type-1) D series (of the late 90s) were pretty good. I had a couple of them (only a couple, because those were my last years with tapes and I was moving over to CDs) and I kind of liked them better than chrome tapes as chrome tapes sounded too much trebly and those normal-bias D tapes were somewhat more "balanced".

Actually sometimes they give W&F issues and in fact it is a little present here. I am going to publish on Instagram a short w&f test 9f the DD9.

@@anadialog Well maybe... As far as I recall, the tape was thin and the cassette was super light overall. Anyways, I don't have much experience with them. Only had a few.

I generally avoided type 1 tapes because they sounded too dull to my ears and even worse with Dolby. Sometimes I would copy a ferric tape to a chrome tape just to make it more pleasant to listen to, though it did lose a bit of bass at the same time. Ideally I would boost the high frequencies of the input signal with an EQ when recording to ferric tape to compensate for its limitations and it did help a lot
