In 2011, The Social Network was the early favorite to win the Best Picture Oscar, but then The King's Speech came from behind to take the top prize. In this video, I break down the Best Picture race at the 83rd Academy Awards and discuss the reasons why The King's Speech defeated The Social Network. #academyawards #oscars #bestpicture #davidfincher #theawardscontender

I know I'm in the vast minority, but I prefer The King's Speech. Maybe it's Firth's performance or something else, but The Social Network, while I still think is very good, never quite clicked with me the same way it has for others. That being said if I had it my way Toy Story 3 would have won.

The Social Network absolutely and definitely should have won Best Picture over The King's Speech because that is a more resonant film for our time and still is today while the other film is like a film that could have been made from the 1950's or 1960's.

@@johnnolan5579i don't think it's a generational thing. King's Speech has something more to it than a story of a stattering king in the door of ww2. I think it has some much deeper humanity to it, because of which it can step out of the timeframe it talks about and has so e timelessness to it. Human struggle, overcoming your weaknesses, facibg your biggest inner fears of failing esp in front of many, failing your family's expectations or even more: prove them wrong, when they don't even think you're able, those aren't just bommers' issues.

The Social Network was hyped to oblivion when it came out but people responded somewhat indiffirently about it. Black Swan was the surprise hit of the award season (Outgrossing The Social Network by 100 million world-wide, despite costing 3 times less) and I believe a lot of the votes that would have gone to the Social Network went to that film.

I didn't know until recently that The King's Speech outgrossed The Social Network (helped by having a lower rating for sure). The King's Speech was also an easy way to award a prestige-looking film with huge mass appeal. If anything, I would commend the filmmakers for achieving that sweet spot because movies about royalty and period dramas generally can be a little heavy. The feel good message probably made it a breeze to campaign for, just like you rooted the King George VI, everyone was also rooting for Colin and his colleagues. It reminds me of the recent EEOAO campaign.

Retrospectively, I wonder if the groundswell of support for The King's Speech might have been at least partially due to the continuing American fascination with the British royal family. I did some googling and found that Prince William and Kate Middleton's engagement was announced ten days before The King's Speech was released. Therefore, there was a simultaneous media-led build up to the first British royal wedding in years and a general movie-going public feeling of "hey, look! There's this movie out now that's about William's great-grandpa!" The Royal Family/American media Industrial Complex train has been chugging away for a long time (see also, The Queen) and I think Academy voters, whether they did this consciously or not, were influenced to vote for a new movie somewhat connected to this big royal wedding mania then currently going on in the media. Maybe it had something to do with the aftershocks of the U.S. 2008 recession: a movie about terrible people perpetuating corrupt corporate practices in America vs a feel-good movie about a British monarch making an encouraging speech to his public? The Social Network was a warning we didn't want to hear; Academy voters instead reached for the safe shiny object that is the media image of the Windsor family.

I think you said it, Brian, the nominees were all so different that the "safest" option would ultimately win. And when the factor in the demographics of Academy voters, they are going to love a historical biopic. Let's not forget that some Academy members also don't actually see all of the nominated films and so some might have not bothered to watch The Social Network, relegating it to "that Facebook movie". If they had given it the time of day and with a more modern demographic, they I think it could have won.

This honestly reminds me of the 58th Oscars, where Out of Africa won best picture along with 6 other awards over The Color Purple, which won no awards. It makes me realize that The King's Speech was like those movies that told of a simpler time (A Historial Epic with the struggles amongst a picture-esque backdrop), so it must've pleased the voters more than a movie like Black Swan and The Social Network. Out of Africa and The King's Speech even give off that vibe where we look back and ask "That was the Best Picture of the year? How?".

Excellent video, Brian! I liked but never fully loved The King's Speech. I'm also incredibly annoyed Colin Firth didn't sweep the season the year before for his superior & devastating performance in A Single Man which would have made a stronger win for him than King's Speech. I also feel that The Social Network would have aged far better as a Best Picture winner, especially looking at the volatile changes Facebook has gone through the last 12 years plus it's an intense and much stronger film. Black Swan, Inception, and Toy Story 3 also would have made much stronger picture wins as well. Love that Natalie Portman performance, definitely an all timer in the Best Actress winner lineage. Like I said, your videos are like traveling in a time machine that's always fun to relive 😂 Thanks for another awesome video ❤ Your Annette Bening & Helena Bonham Carter Elusive Oscar videos will be fascinating to watch. 'The King's Speech' gave me my greatest experience EVER in a cinema: I watched it in France (in English with French subtitles). At the end the entire audience rose and applauded. A standing ovation. I have never witnessed before or since. I was incredibly proud to be English - my feelings have changed considerably since Brexit and incompetent governments. However, on that day I experienced something magical. A worthy winner for Best Film. And Best Actor. Only downside was Helena Bonham-Carter being robbed. Every cloud . .

I’ve always felt The King’s Speech was a good movie on its own, it’s well directed, well told and has fantastic performances. But as a Best Picture winner, it’s one I’ve always disagreed with. The only award it won I agree with is Colin Firth, he did a phenomenal job and I don’t have a single problem with his victory. Best Original Screenplay I would’ve given the award to Inception for its originality and how mind-bending it is. The Social Network is my favorite David Fincher with my second being Fight Club. It’s a masterwork in directing, acting, screenplay, film editing and music. What could’ve been a boring film made it to something riveting with the right cast and crew. My two favorite films of 2010 were Inception and Toy Story 3, The Social Network was my third favorite and still to this day would’ve loved to seen that win Best Picture and Best Director.

As someone who liked The king's speech more than the social network (I have my problems with Sorkin's writing), I think Hooper winning for director was so not worthy. All the other four movies deserved it more (personally, I would have voted for Aronofsky). The King's Speech is not a bad directed movie, but I think that Hooper did the bare minimum. He is good at directing actors, I'll give that to him, but his images are not that powerful and some choices are just "meh".

This was the Oscar season in which I became a fan and therefore followed the awards season coverage on a regular basis. I remember back then being obsessed with The King’s Speech back in high school, and my friend at first (who is a huge film fan more than me) bet on The Social Network to win up until the guilds’ awards tilted to TKS. And we love Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter! (Btw, Helena’s surname is Bonham Carter, NOT Carter, and she’s basically part of the posh clique due to her ancestry (being a direct descendant of a former Prime Minister), but I look forward for your Elusive Oscar and Emmy on HBC) Looking back, though, TKS, although a great film, is no match to its Best Picture competitors which are more or less, become “classics” of this century - Inception, Black Swan, The Social Network. TKS is not a bad film, and it’s a great one to rewatch, but its association with The Weinstein Company (TWC) and Harvey’s machinations tainted its legacy as a worthy Best Picture winner. I did have a feeling that Colin Firth’s close association to Weinstein/Miramax in shaping his career did not do well especially in the last years of the 2010s until now. (To be clear, he did nothing wrong in his behavior) He still gets a good amount of work (I mean, he was even nominated for an Emmy recently) but it seems that his star somewhat faded among the middle-aged British men. I also think that another reason why TSN didn’t win Best Picture is that it may seem “too early” to do a biopic drama about the creation of Facebook. Facebook started in 2004 but it did not boom until the late 2000s and 2010s. It’s too contemporaneous to do a commentary on an emerging/ongoing social media revolution. (That’s why dramas pertaining to COVID tend to be contrived and too recent to think in a historical lens) I do have some hopes in the new film about the rise and fall of Blackberry, I hope IFC campaigns it well.

King's Speech and The Queen are the very few biographical movies I actually like. I guess it's because they could tell a story beyond the main character's life, much more than just a biography and have some deep humanity in them. Social Network (another biographical movie) wasn't that strong on these fronts. To me at least it's much less memorable as either The Queen or King's Speech. And the climax in these 2 is just perfect. By the time you get there, you literally can breath and feel together with the main character.

I followed the film press around The Oscars, and what the frontrunners were/are.. I never thought, or saw THIS as an upset.. All the others films you listed are as upsets are fair. Brokeback Mountain, Greenbook, and the others.. But King Speech is Oscar Bait.. A film about British Royalty with a handicap.. Overcoming all the odds to do a speech.. The Social Network was very good.. With a great wordy screenplay.. But in other departments, it wasn't much better, it was just much different.. And with The Oscars, as we had with Jeff Bridges, Paul Newman had one and arguably Martin Scorsesesese's was, sometimes you just get oscars that are "it's their time" oscars.. That was the case for Firth. He wasn't the best.. He was just solid..

I think Jesse had the best shot at an upset, though I love Franco in 127 hours. I wish Jesse got more love for his performance. Social network deserved the win. It's a shame twc had to be involved because this really feels like a Shakespeare in love repeat.

Inception was so ahead of its time! Shallow minds of the academy members couldn’t handle it! Best script! Nolan and Fincher are GOATS! With best movies of that year❤ Moonlight for me is worst winner, so as SiL🤨

Death Match Face Off: In this corner, Bertie, aka George VI, King of Great Britain and in the other corner, Zuck you Suck, aka Mark the King of Social Media. Let the battle of the Biopics begin. The Oscars have a huge biopic addiction it NEEDS to kick.

Seems like the academy favors British period dramas, as do I, not saying either of us should have a vote in the Oscars. (Mostly commenting for the YT algorithm because I love this channel)

The irony is that David Fincher won the BAFTA best director that year not Tom Hooper. Everything else was The King's Speech.

I jumped for joy when The King's Speech won Best Picture. I do enjoy The Social Network, but for me, The King's Speech has more rewatchability because of its lovable cast. If The King's Speech is a crowd-pleaser, I was certainly part of that crowd! Edit: I'm also looking forward to your Annette Benning video!

I rolled my eyes. I loved King's Speech up until it won. Funny you thought Black Swan had no shot, as I assumed it had as good a chance as Social Network. I'm surprised you didn't bring up the possibility that with so many good films, the vote was split and the least offensive snuck in. That's what I thought happened at the time.

I don't buy the preferential ballot as a way to explain the film's win. It won Directing. It had it in the bag, even in the case of plurality voting.

I am the only person to think that Remake films should not be allowed to be nominated at any awards ceremony. It's so redundant and reductive, storylines are the same with some minor tweaking, the only difference is the casting of the actors/actress and how are they going to portray the same characters with nuances. The songs for the musical break (if there is one) might be slightly different to make it tasteful with the current era in which the movie was released. Nothing so special about it to me other than just worsened than previously. That's it.

The Social Network was defintely the one that should've won Best Picture in 2010! I think there would've been a big inclination of a possible Best Picture win and that was if Andrew Garfield would've snuck in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance but he didn't. I felt if Garfield might have gotten in Supporting Actor that might have helped increase the films chances. But the Tom Hooper for director was rather meh. Btw if you want a chuckle, go check out Miriam Margolyes comments about "The Social Network" she hated the movie and while I don't neccessarily agree with her comments it was quite funny from the hilariously unfiltered Miriam!

I forgot King’s Speech was that same year. I thought it was from the following year for some reason, in which case it still wouldn’t have been the best film, but that next year was a weaker field. That being the case was a genuine travesty, since 2010 was one of the great years for ambitious films by directors near the top of their games. Inception, Social Network, Black Swan, or the Fighter all would have been better choices. Heck the Kids Are All Right or Winter’s Bone would at least have been more interesting. King’s Speech was one of those period pieces I swore I’d seen 10 times already. It didn’t appear to be made to make money, to entertain, or to be seen at all by the masses. Instead it felt like a ping to test whether academy voters still respond to tropes. WW2 setting: check. Famous, award winning actor: check. Protagonist with an impediment: check.

It feels strange whenever I hear anyone passionately promote one film I find mediocre over another film I find mediocre. I preferred The King's Speech over The Social Network, but neither of them are worth the air to me. I left both with a shrug and don't think either were worthy of a Best Pic nomination. I have rewatched them, just to keep informed, and getting through The Social Network again was a real slog. Generally I found it to be a weak year, one where I can't get emotionally involved with the awards since nothing really grabbed me. Now things are very different with Green Book and I agree that was a far worse Best Pict winner. But that's largely due to there being so many much, much better films (both nominated, and not).

The social network never seemed like a great movie to me, rather when I saw it I said to myself, "What's so great about this movie? there are better nominated films". The protests for The social network are more about David fincher than about the film itself.

Best Director is my fav Oscar category and I cannot for the life of me find a logical reason to vote for Tom Hooper. Every other nominee did a much more impressive job on their films and they didn´t even nominate Nolan for Inception, Hooper´s style on the other hand is so painfully okay and formulaic it looks like a KZbin skit.

I find The Social Network totally overrated, it's fine and entertaining, but nothing spectacular. Out of the 10 nominated movies, I would probably put it in 5th or 6th. The King's Speech is not my winner that year but I vastly prefer it over The Social Network.
