The King's Speech | What Christians should make of Labour's promise to ban 'conversion therapy'

The King has said in his speech today that a draft bill will be brought forward by the Labour government to ban 'conversion practices'. Our Communications Manager Paul Huxley shares more about how we got here and what a ban means for the freedom of people seeking to turn away from a homosexual lifestyle.
Every act of abuse that should be outlawed is already illegal in the UK. All that a 'conversion practices' ban would do is stop people having consensual conversations and prayer - with a pastor, a counsellor, a therapist or a support group.
To find out more about why we have resisted a ban on so-called 'conversion practices' for years, please visit the Free to Talk website:

@@1187gavThat's good, the Holy Spirit certainly helps us with our flesh. However, I don't think it's helpful to equate sexual orientation with lust, it's a different issue altogether.

For anyone reading the proposed bans and wondering how they will outlaw prayer & conversations on the topic: The definition of conversion therapy centers on intentions - the bans are targeting practices that "seek" to overturn or suppress G.I. & S.O. By adopting this definition, it opens up the possibility for bad motives to be attributed to anyone speaking about these matters. Hence, no speech on this topic is truly protected.

Just as we cannot stop the tide coming in, so It is impossible to stop the Holy Spirit sweeping into peoples' lives and drawing them to repentance and submission to the Lordship of Christ. Enemies of the Gospel, such as MPs who want this ban on conversion, are fulfilling Romans 1 v 22.

Excellent point on the ban's impact on human rights. A question off the back of this: How will Christians defend the preaching of the Gospel and its call for people to repent of sin? Preaching is not consensual in the same way that pastoral counselling is, and so this argument from human rights doesn't apply. We could argue from the freedom of speech, but everyone believes on limits to this freedom. Why shouldn't the supposed harm that gospel preaching might do to LGTQ people be a reason to see gospel preaching as an exception to the freedom of speech, just as calls to violence are? It seems that at some point we are going to have to make our religious presuppositions clear and argue from them. Standing on the shrinking middle ground between the biblical world-view and the world seems like we're only biding our time.
@ChristianConcernUK
@ChristianConcernUK Ай бұрын
Thanks Luke, Paul here - and you're right that the human rights point is limited - I mentioned it as the legal framework we're living in rather than to suggest it's the highest authority. And the example you give of preaching is not far from the kind of thing being argued now in court - it's not all that far-fetched: christianconcern.com/news/christian-social-worker-appeals-after-being-discriminated-against/

If, as Paul writes in the Epistle to the Romans, the Holy Spirit changes one from 'glory to glory' to be the image of Christ, after they take the ultimate 'conversion therapy' of accepting Him as their Saviour, Redeemer and Lord, and that there is *no* implicit or explicit sense that Jesus was 'homosexual' (despite the Secular World's best efforts to claim otherwise, and not a few 'intellectual Christian Bible scholars'), there can be no human law to stop anyone receiving the 'conversion therapy' the Gospel of Christ offers. Besides, homosexuality is firstly a spiritual condition, demonic in nature through a human agency of abuse (whether physical or sexual, or both) via the mental landscape, thus a psychological condition, and, secondly, *there is no medical - chromosomal, endocrinal or genetic marker - that causes the condition. None! Studies done by the Human Genome Project, which has discovered all sorts of genetic anomalies, and a USMC study, under the Clinton Presidency (to 'prove such a link') in the 1990s showed up *nothing,* and nothing since. But, here we are trying to persuade ourselves 'to trust the science'. Again. My assertions have never been definitively proven wrong, though I wrote this fairly often in the past; often ignored, sometimes abused. And here I am again. We are living, Christian, in Sodom under the Babylonian/Philistine Spirit of Jezebel, where 'anything goes' is the watchword. Like Lot, I am very vexed. And worse, the Church Politic is accepting this Spirit as 'the blessing of G-d', which will put the leaders and others very much in the goat line. *Don't be in that line, Christian.* Shalom.

I would like to hear evidence of 'lots of people experience meaningful change', said in this video. Most ex gay ministries have now closed down in any case, and Alan Chambers, the ex president of Exodus has said that change in orientation is very rare. Again, I would ask for evidence of the statement made here??

I’m a little bit confused. I understand the intent behind being against this ban, but isn’t this poorly thought through? As Christians, our aim is to plant seeds, to make disciples, by sharing the gospel with others in hopes that they’ll come to faith in Christ, then let God do the work in removing their sin issue. Our job isn’t to forcibly stop sin in their life. Correct me if I’m lacking in any information.

It's a nice thought but reminds me of the pods in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Please don’t plant a seed anywhere near me 😂 But for the fact that there isn’t a god and there is nothing wrong with homosexuality, I'd agree with your reasoning.

Hi there, bisexual person here. So... my parents are both christian and studied theology and they are fully supportive of my sexuality. I guess that just shows you can be a Christian and also supportive of the LGBTQ+ Community... its not mutually exclusive. Also, you can be a Christian and be gay/queer... just saying.
@naomispencer3246
@naomispencer3246 Ай бұрын
No, you can't be a PRACTICING gay/queer Christian. Gay thoughts, attractions and lusts are not in themselves incompatible with Christianity. However ACTING upon those desires knowingly and willfully is sinful, as is pre-marital heterosexual intercourse. Living a life of celibacy as a same sex-attracted Christian, or an unmarried straight-attracted Christian are both fine, since we can't help/control our desires. However we must die to the flesh, and resist giving in to temptations our desires make us want to act on. This is when we fall into "sin". The same goes for sins such as gluttony (rarely spoken about in Christian circles). It's natural to want to eat 5 slices of cake in a row for breakfast, but giving in to this desire becomes sinful. So with respect to your parents, I believe they are wrong, but are probably too scared of losing relationship with you. Or like so many Christians, "progressive" views have crept in... Please repent, while you have breath, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you turn from the things we are commanded to eschew. He will help you, IF you are serious about your sin. Because God sure is! And you will one day have to stand before Him in judgement and answer for your life.
