What does it mean to deny yourself?

That's such a great question. This may be a little lengthy but I wanted to be sure I gave you a complete response: Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Jesus is pointing to the fact that a life of sacrifice and self-denial is for anyone and everyone who wants to be his disciple. “Deny,” is a verb an action. What Jesus calls us to deny is our selves, meaning our sinful selves, with all the selfish desires of our fallen nature. “Deny” is to reject any thought of doing what will please ourselves over God. Instead of gratifying ourselves or indulging ourselves in all the ways our sinful nature demands, we are called to deny ourselves, rejecting anything and everything that will get in the way of offering ourselves to God. Jesus not only invites all those who would follow Him to a place of choosing Him over our self demands but He has also given us His Spirit which gives us the power to do what He bids us to do, in this case deny the nature within us that is at enmity with God (Romans 8:7-8). Denying self means saying no to sin, no to inner ungodly attitudes, no to unhealthy destructive habits, no to prideful, self-indulgent acquisitions stemming from greed, no to habits that robs us of our spiritual strength. At times it also means saying no to many things that are good in themselves but are not God’s will for us, at least at the present moment. “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it” (Luke 9:24). It is important to know that self denial in this sense is not forced by God but an invitation to a journey of transformation that he extends to us. To become and to experience the greater He has for us. No person can make us deny ourselves. That’s religion and legalism. But to deny is is something we do because we love God and we trust His plans for us far greater than our own plans for us. It comes from a deep desire to delight ourselves in the Lord. And when we embrace His invitations we experience the greater fruit from our lives that He desires for us to experience. I hope this helps.
