São Salvador (modern M'banza-Kongo), the capital of the Kingdom of Kongo, was a major cultural and trade hub in the early modern era. Featured in Allain Manesson Mallet's 1683 atlas *Description de l'Univers*, the city was depicted with elephants, symbolizing strength, wealth, and royal authority. Elephants held cultural significance in Kongo society and were central to the ivory trade, which connected the kingdom to European markets. Alongside ivory, São Salvador became a focal point in the transatlantic slave trade, reflecting the complex and often exploitative interactions between the Kongo Kingdom and European powers like Portugal.
