I agree! That’s why I wasn’t so surprised when I found out Rothfuss studied chemistry in college for years and years before deciding to be an author full-time.

Sympathy feels like science because the guy that worked out the details of the concept is a physicist. I'm talking about Lyndon Hardy and his 1980 fantasy debut "Master of the Five Magics". I love Rothfuss but credit should go where it's due.
@adamplentl55884 жыл бұрын
Ministry of Truth I see you are a man of culture. But to Rothfuss’ credit he has stated exactly that at one of his panels. Or one of his livestreams. I’d have to go look for it but I recall it with certainty.

@@adamplentl5588 You are too kind and a man of culture yourself. I too recall watching footage of Rothfuss acknowledging the "The Kingkiller Chronicle" was influenced by "Master of the Five Magics". Having read all Rothfuss' books and "Master of the Five Magics" I would say that sympathy being "influenced" by thaumaturgy is clearly an understatement. Credit where credit is due. Let Hardy have his. Rothfuss is still the better writer and storyteller.

I believe one of the keys to the story is that Kvote actually becomes cracked much earlier in the story than we suspect. Part of his mind is locked away after his family gets killed and it remains locked all the way up to the present moment in the story. In a dream Kvote says he remembered sitting under a waystone with he's parents and listing to his father singing his new completed song about Lanre. I believe this is not a dream but a glimpse of a memory that is still hidden from him. The reason the 7 came for the camp that night, is that his father sang the completed song. Cinder even says it:" Someone's parents have been singing the wrong types of songs." Cinder is talking about THE song that his father sang THAT night. Kvote just doesn't remember it anymore for some reason. He mentions that, in Treburn he slowly start to piece together Hi's mind again, he just never truly completed this process.

@ancorgarciaalvarez5 ай бұрын
im sorry but I don't think this theory makes enough sense. We know that Arliden (Kvothe's father) practiced his song with Laurile (Kvothe's mother) while he wrote it to be able to finish it properly, it is hinted in the books that Kvothe might not be Arliden's son but Iax's and that Iax (being trapped behind the doors of stone) sends Kvothe uselful information to help him survive and lastly free him through dreams. Like when his troupe is killed and hi dreams of every skill he needs to survive in the forest. The dream you refer to is durng the day if I'm not mistaken and Kvothe father's played the song during Ben's goodbye party and Kvothe's birthday, during night time. In the dream Arliden doesn'tt play the song but simply says hi is finished. Also telling the story of Lanre and the chaendrian once is not enough to lead them to your exact location, if that was the case Shehyn and all of Ademre would have being destroyed way earlier that the books, BC they have the poem with their true names. The reason the Chaendrian were able to locate and murder Arliden¡s troop is BC Kvothe's parents would play the song constantly whil writting it, rehaersing it time and again. It is also BC Arliden play the song for people openly (even if it was only the begining) for the frst time in that party, leading to all the troop chattering about it probably and I'm sure Ben told many people about that song which lead to a bigger amount of signals being made to the chaendrian in their search of people with true information about them. I do agree that Kvothe is, at same level mad, and that his sense of morality, justice and fairness have being disturb, that's can be for a multiple set of reasons, my personal favourite despite not being very plausible, that being an Amyr is smthg that comes at birth and not a brotherhood you can join (based on what felurian says about the amyr), and that Kvothe is an amyr and that's why he is able to act with such strong and fast decison making. Nevertheless, I do not think that Arliden's song was ever finish, we don't have enough prove of that and I think it's more plauible that dream was sent by Iax in order to push Kvothe to keep searching for the chaendrian rather than it being a locked memory coming back.

Idle thoughts, assuming older Kvothe is still able to use his Sympathy and Naming abilities, he must be a Sympathy powerhouse! Example, older Kvothe knows the name of fire and blood, which I believe he may be able to actively manage thermal slippage and draw as much sympathetic energy as he wants.

Sounds ridiculously difficult. You would need to have your conscious mind believe two contradictory things while simultaneously being in the intuitive state of mind to allow your subconscious to perceive Names. It would be extremely tiring at best or risk shunting you past the door of madness at worst.

Stealing ideas or magic systems is ok. In fact it is encouraged among writers. Shakespeare stole Romeo and Juliet and named it something else. He didnt just copy a thing here and there, no there were a ton of similarities between the two. Something with hamlet.

@@greenguy369 Great comment. In my defense, I'd be the first to admit my memory is less than perfect. I do not recall the exact words Rothfuss used in the panel. It's been years since I've watched it. So I concede I might have been uncharitable there. Still, my criticism it's not so much about whatever words Rothfuss used to describe his "borrowing" or his borrowing of the concept itself. I'm sure Hardy too borrowed the concept of sympathetic magic from Sir James George Frazer who in turn borrowed it from someone else. The concept of sympathetic magic has a long history. The problem is Rothfuss borrowed the very specific mechanics Hardy developed for the general concept. Personally, that's where I draw the line. That goes well beyond borrowing imho. Maybe others are fine with it. I'm not. A humorous admission of rip-off by Rothfuss does not make it fine. I strongly suspect if Rothfuss had borrowed the mechanics of a magic system by a popular author like Brandon Sanderson or Brent Weeks most people would not be ok with it, at all. I fully agree with you that Rothfuss brought new life to Hardy's long forgotten "Magic by the Numbers" series. The attention Rothfuss' huge success brought to Hardy's work might have even got the old man to write again! Check it out if you haven't already.

I'm not sure it's necessary to believe contradictory things to form a sympathetic link. I think this is just an excersise to develop splitting one's mind. To make a single link I got the impression you just had to believe the two objects were one and the same.

if i remember correctly, particles have to be created at the same time to be entangled. And you can't entangle them through sheer force of will, or do any of the stuff that Kvothe does with them. The best, I think, would be teleportation, which is still faaar out of our reach.

The V is not silent, as stated and pronounced by Rothfuss.
@strictlyfantasy4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know. I make a point of this at the very end of my Kvothe Character Study video. It's not that I don't know the V is not silent, but rather my tongue struggles to pronounce it correctly whilst talking in complete sentences. If I do include the V then it comes out as "K-Vothe" which isn't right either. Nevertheless, I dont think this issue alone warrents as a sufficient reason to not make Kingkiller videos.

Sympathy also bugged me because I feel like Magic shouldn’t have rules like naming doesn’t. Whenever K’vothe names something he’s not doing math or calculating for slippage, he just does it. While with sympathy he has to follow rules.
