Lyrics: While In the merry month of May n'o, From my home I started, Left the girls of Chum, I ' Nearly broken hearted, Saluted father dear, Kissed my darlin' mother, Drank a pint of beer-My grief and tears to smotherTHENOFF to reap THE CORN, nleave for I WAS BORN, cut a stout blackthorn, To banish ghost and goblin, brand new PAIR of brogues, to rattled OVER THE BOGS, n'Frightened all the DOOGS,On the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four five, Hunt the hare and turn her Down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, Maic-fol-loli-ra. In Mullingar that night, I rested limbs so weary, Started by daylight, Next mornin' light and airy, Took a drop of the pure, To keep my heart from sinkin', That's a Paddy's cure, Whene'er he's on for drinking. To see the lasses smile, Laughing all the while, At my curious style, 'Twould set your heart a-bubblin'. They ax'd if I was hired, The wages I required, Till I was almost tired, Of the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four five, Hunt the hare and turn her Down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, Whack-fol-lol-de-ra. In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity, To be so soon deprived, A view of that fine city. Then I took a stroll, All among the quality, My bundle it was stole, In a neat locality; Something crossed my mind, Then I looked behind; No bundle could I find, Upon my stick a wobblin'. Enquirin' for the rogue, They said my Connacht brogue, Wasn't much in vogue, On the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four five, Hunt the hare and turn her Down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, Whack-fol-lol-de-ra. From there I got away, My spirits never failin' Landed on the quay As the ship was sailin'; Captain at me roared, Said that no room had he, When I jumped aboard, A cabin found for Paddy, Down among the pigs I played some hearty rigs, Danced some hearty jigs, The water round me bubblin', When off Holyhead, I wished myself was dead, Or better far instead, On the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four five, Hunt the hare and turn her Down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, Whack-fol-lol-de-ra. The boys of Liverpool, When we safely landed, Called myself a fool; I could no longer stand it; Blood began to boil, Temper I was losin', Poor ould Erin's isle They began abusin', "Hurrah my soul," sez I, My shillelagh I let fly; Some Galway boys were by, Saw I was a hobble in, Then with a loud hurray, They joined in the affray. We quickly cleared the way, For the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four five, Hunt the hare and turn her Down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.

brought tears. My gran was named Shanahan. Her parents moved from Limerick to take a job in West Virginia at the turn of the 20th century. I hadn't thought about this song in decades(I'm 40 now) and I was throwing a St. Paddy's party and was looking for new Irish music and came across this, and it just brought back a memory of my gran singing this in the kitchen, wearing her nightgown and putting away dishes. I must've been 10 and I remember asking her if she was speaking English and she winked and said "kinda pumpkin". Thanks. She would've loved to watch this.

@@84rebz It's not really about where u live. It's a Saint, and his name is Patrick that's all. You can call a Patrick "Paddy" (and it can be an insult in the UK and even here in Ireland), but calling St. Patrick "Paddy" like he's ur typical neighbor is not well seen here.

@@JohnDouille Buddy I don't do this. I know everything is an offense and insult today. I'm sorry you were offended, at mass on his feast day we refer to him as St. Patrick. While drinking beer and dancing its St. Paddy and me agreeing to stop saying it(which I'm not because its silly) is not going to change how bars and revelers refer to that night

Took me weeks, if not month to grasp it (and it's not that great yet)... have to try with the guitar now. (gosh... odd lyrics, odd words, odd rythme.......) At one point, I was talking about it at a bar with a friend, while listening to the track... An irish guy passing by stopped, with a smile saying this made his day by reminding him of Ireland. The guy just sang along like no prob, easy peasy.... Put me to shame, but great moment with the lad. Irish people just know how to spread the good mood and spent quality time !

While in the merry month of May, now from me home I started Left, the girls of Tuam were nearly broken-hearted Saluted father dear, kissed me darling mother Drank a pint of beer, me grief and tears to smother Then off to reap the corn and leave where I was born Cut a stout, black thorn to banish ghosts and goblins A brand-new pair of brogues to rattle over the bogs And frighten all the dogs on the rocky road to Dublin A-one, two, three, four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah In Mullingar that night I rested limbs so weary Started by daylight next morning blithe and early Took a drop of pure to keep me heart from shrinking Thats the Paddy's cure when'er he's on for drinking To hear the lassies smile, laughing all the while At me curious style, 'twould set your heart a-bubblin' They asked me was I hired and wages I required to lay Was almost tired of the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three, four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity To be so soon deprived a view of that fine city So then I took a stroll, all among the quality Bundle it was stolen, in a neat locality Something crossed me mind, when I looked behind No bundle could I find upon me stick a-wobblin' 'Quiring after the rogue, said me Connaught brogue It wasn't much in vogue on the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah From there I got away, me spirits never falling Landed on the quay, just as the ship was sailing Captain at me roared, said that no room had he When I jumped aboard, a cabin found for Paddy Down among the pigs, did some hearty rigs I played some hearty jigs, the water round me bubbling When off Holyhead I wished meself was dead Or better for instead on the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah The boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed Called meself a fool, I could no longer stand it Blood began to boil, temper I was losing Poor old Erin's Isle they began abusing "Hurrah me soul" says I, me Shillelagh I let fly Galway boys were by and saw I was a hobblin' With a "lo!" and "hurray!" they joined in the affray Quickly cleared the way for the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, whack, follol de-dah

In Mullingar that night I rested limbs so weary Started by daylight me spirits bright and airy Took a drop of the pure Keep me heart from sinking That's the Paddy's cure whenever he's on drinking To see the lassies smile, laughing all the while At me curious style, 'twould set your heart a bubblin' An' asked if I was hired, wages I required 'Till I was nearly tired of the rocky road to Dublin One two three four five Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol lol le rah! In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity To be soon deprived a view of that fine city Well then I took a stroll, all among the quality Bundle it was stole, all in a neat locality Something crossed me mind, when I looked behind No bundle could I find upon me stick a wobblin' Enquiring for the rogue, said me Connaught brogue Wasn't much in vogue on the rocky road to Dublin One two three four five Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol lol le rah! From there I got away, me spirits never falling Landed on the quay, just as the ship was sailing The Captain at me roared, said that no room had he When I jumped aboard, a cabin found for Paddy Down among the pigs, played some funny rigs Danced some hearty jigs, the water round me bubbling When off Holyhead wished meself was dead Or better far instead On the rocky road to Dublin One two three four five Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol lol le rah! The boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed Called meself a fool, I could no longer stand it Blood began to boil, temper I was losing Poor old Erin's isle they began abusing "Hurrah me soul!" says I, me shillelagh I let fly Some Galway boys were nigh and saw I was a hobble in With a loud "Hurray!" joined in the affray We quickly cleared the way for the rocky road to Dublin One two three four five Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol lol le rah! Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol lol le rah! Whack fol lol le rah! Whack fol lol le rah!

Great singing, great music, great band, as good as any band in Ireland at the moment and a brilliant setting for this video, but how come I haven't heard this local County Galway band (not even ONCE) playing on any local radio stations. But haven't we had many great bands here in County Galway, like for example "The Fellz" and "South of Heaven," (to name just two), who I think may have split up mainly because they couldn't get any air play on local radio stations. And I'm not talking about the token one of two plays here and there that local radio stations usually use to try and appease bands, what I'm talking about is regular air play on a regular basis week in and week out. This band will make it if they get regular airplay on local radio and if not they will probably split up like so many great bands have here in County Galway. And up and coming bands like this shouldn't have to have a Record Company or a PR firm pulling strings for them in order to get air play locally. As I've said many times before all these local radio stations have no problem availing of local listeners and local advertisers. Maybe it's time we started moving the dial to radio stations that will implement 25% of all music played to be local (from within County). Best of luck to this great band, we here in County Galway are so lucky to have such talented singers and musicians such as this and other bands still making great music, despite being ignore by local radio stations and they should be supported.
