Great to see someone else was intrigued by this too. I'm not a guitar player, tho his guitar looks very similar to a flying V of the 1980s metal scene. His guitar here appears very futuristic in a black/white vid of the Kinks from the mid 60s.

Yes, but not exactly. 🤔 To hear Dave explain the Gibson "V's" appearance, the Kinks came to the U.S., to Los Angeles, to do shows and TV, and Dave didn't have a guitar; it might not have shown up during their airplane arrival/baggage claim. 🤨 He quickly made it to a local music store, and after seeing the "V" and thinking it would look real cool on-stage, he purchased the instrument for not too much $money$. 😉

@danadnauseam7 жыл бұрын
If that was a prototype, that explains why it looks o anachronistic. I wasn't aware they were available then. Given what Dave did with some of his equipment on early Kinks records, I'm not surprised he'd want to try it.
@BarDog576 жыл бұрын
The flying V came out in '58, with prototypes made in '57. They didn't sell well, and were discontinued in '59. A few were made out of spare parts in '63 with nickel rather than gold hardware. Thanks in part to Dave Davies, popularity picked up and Gibson resumed production in '67, with some tweeks to the design, and they've been in production since. What cracked me up in this video is how he keeps placing his arm between the wings while playing. Seems in those days, most guitarists played with their instrument at almost chest height, which looks rather awkward with that V shape. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_Flying_V

Never got the idea why teens (or anyone in that matter) are obliged to choose their identity from many and build it around a one band or an artistof a choice. I admit I am millenial and I wasn't around at the time but it's still happened within people of my generation. The time I found out about these bands I never felt there is any feud between 'em or any contradiction in liking both of 'em. Same goes with the Who, Stones or the Yardbirds (and to that list of the greats I'd certainly add the Small Faces who are blatantly and seriously underrated 4-piece, although I wish I'll never have to use that word again.) Especially considering The Kinks and The Beatles the bands weren't THAT different ('til later when The Beatles had disbanded and The Kinks evolved into their 70's era) they were both quite rock n roll, r'n'b and pop when they needed to. Perhaps Fab 4 had a few more sort of teeny pop singles at one point, but listening to the albums + material that is out now, they were definitely a rocking band as well. The real teeny poppers of the era are maybe Herman's Hermits, Manfred Mann, and their american equivalents the Monkees, who seems like a parody band for me, though and I enjoy song or 2 by them from time to time.

Damned great tune. Watch Dave as he rakes those strings back and forth... FAT rhythm sound! If you want a heavily Kinks influenced artist, grab a listen to Martin Newell and his album "The Greatest Living Englishman." Newell is a GREAT writer, and happens to be one of the UKs most published modern poets. Ray Davies as one of his chief inspirations, and his pop sensibility is everywhere on the album, especially on "A Street Called Prospect" where he nails that Kinks rhythm and tasty chord changes. This is a GREAT record, and was produced by none other than Andy Partridge of XTC.

One of the most amazing things about this performance is that the drummer could keep playing while that rickety lift-thing pushed him into the air.
